Hoi An's Golden Embrace

Today was a sensory explosion in Hoi An! From the iconic Hoi An Yellow Wall whispering stories of centuries past to the vibrant art scene and delectable cuisine, every moment felt like stepping into a postcard. I was completely captivated by the town's unique blend of history, culture, and artistic expression. It was a day of exploration, discovery, and pure joy – one that I'll cherish long after I've left this enchanting place.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Nhan's Kitchen. I opted for a steaming bowl of pho, the aromatic broth and tender noodles setting the perfect tone for the adventures ahead. Jan, always the early bird, had already scoped out the best spot to capture the morning light. I met him there, ready to explore the Hoi An Yellow Wall.

Wandering through the Ancient Town, I understood why Hoi An is often called the 'Yellow City'. The vibrant yellow walls seemed to radiate warmth, their hues shifting with the changing sunlight. It felt like walking through a living painting, each corner offering a new perspective and a photo opportunity. I even wore my favourite Ankara print dress, the vibrant colours popping beautifully against the golden backdrop. I felt a deep connection to the town, as if my Kenyan heritage was blending seamlessly with the Vietnamese landscape.

We spent a good hour simply wandering, soaking in the atmosphere, and snapping photos. It’s amazing how a single colour can define a place, creating a sense of unity and timelessness. The yellow walls of Hoi An are more than just a backdrop; they tell a story of resilience, community, and the enduring spirit of this ancient trading port. I learned that the yellow is believed to absorb less heat, making them perfect for the hot summer months, and also symbolizes prosperity in feng shui.

Next on the agenda was the Rehahn Gallery. I had read so much about Réhahn's work, particularly his dedication to documenting Vietnam's diverse ethnic groups, and I was eager to see his photographs in person. The gallery was a haven of tranquility, a welcome respite from the bustling streets outside. Each portrait told a story, capturing the unique beauty and cultural richness of the people of Vietnam. I was particularly moved by the images of the children, their eyes filled with a mixture of innocence and resilience. It reminded me of my own childhood in Nyahururu, and the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations.

Réhahn's work is not just photography; it's a form of cultural preservation, a way of honoring the traditions and customs of Vietnam's ethnic communities. The gallery also displayed traditional costumes, musical instruments, and artifacts from 54 different ethnic groups in Vietnam. It was fascinating to learn about the diverse languages, architectural traditions, and religious beliefs that separate each group from one another. I was deeply inspired by Réhahn's mission to promote cultural understanding and respect, a mission that resonates with my own passion for cultural exchange.

After immersing ourselves in the world of photography, we decided to take a leisurely stroll along the Hoi An Sculpture Promenade. Located by the river, it offered a serene escape from the bustling night market. The sculptures, crafted by artists from around the world, added a contemporary touch to the historic setting. I was particularly drawn to a piece that seemed to depict the ebb and flow of life, a reminder of the constant change and renewal that shapes our world. As we wandered, we watched the boats glide along the river, their lanterns casting shimmering reflections on the water. The air was filled with the gentle sounds of the city – the chatter of locals, the distant music, and the rhythmic lapping of the waves.

Lunch beckoned, and we headed to HOME Hoi An - HOME Vietnamese Restaurant, a place recommended for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant was indeed a home away from home, with a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I savoured every bite of the Cao Lau, a local specialty with thick noodles, crispy pork, and fresh greens. Jan, ever adventurous, tried the Mi Quang, another regional dish, and declared it a culinary masterpiece. The fresh ingredients and the explosion of flavors were a testament to the vibrant culinary scene of Hoi An.

No trip to Hoi An is complete without a bit of shopping, so we ventured into Unique Hoi An Fashion. I was immediately drawn to the shop's commitment to ethical and sustainable fashion. The shop works directly with local Hoi An tailors and H'mong textile craftspeople to bring a modern twist to these stunning skills. I found a beautiful hand-embroidered scarf made from natural silk, a perfect souvenir to remind me of my time in Vietnam. It felt good to support local artisans and to know that my purchase was contributing to a sustainable fashion industry.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to An Bang Beach Village Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant, tucked away in a hidden alley, was a true gem. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the traditional Vietnamese dishes were bursting with flavour. I had the grilled fish with lemongrass and chili, a perfect blend of spicy and savory. We sat under the stars, listening to the waves crashing on the shore, and reflecting on the day's adventures. The owner, Dong, was exceptionally welcoming, and after we paid our bills, the staff even gave us complimentary mangoes, which was such a lovely gesture!

To cap off the perfect day, we decided to check out the Woop Woop Bar. It was a great little quiet place to have drinks and a perfect way to wind down after a busy day of exploring. I enjoyed a refreshing cocktail, while Jan opted for a local beer. The bar had a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and we struck up a conversation with some fellow travellers, sharing stories and laughter. The bar has a big garden to relax with a drink or a snack and get away from the heat and the crowds. It's a great place to meet other local LGBT and tourists. As we sipped our drinks, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I had had today. Hoi An had truly captured my heart, with its golden walls, vibrant art scene, and delicious cuisine. I knew that this was a place I would never forget.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Chùa Cầu (Japanese Covered Bridge) and immerse ourselves in the cultural performances at Hoi An Memories Land. I am looking forward to another day filled with exploration and discovery. I am also keen to visit Hoi An Specialty Shop (THU CANH) to see if I can find some unique souvenirs.

As I reflect on today, I realize that Hoi An is more than just a beautiful town; it's a place that nourishes the soul, inspires creativity, and connects people from all walks of life. It's a place where the past and the present coexist in perfect harmony, where the golden walls whisper stories of centuries past, and where the vibrant culture continues to thrive. I am so grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
