Saturday Adventures in Hoi An

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Hoi An's cultural tapestry. From exploring ancient landmarks to witnessing breathtaking performances, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery. Hoi An continues to enchant me with its unique blend of history and vibrant modern life.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Cao Cao Grasshopper. Jan and I enjoyed some lovely Vietnamese coffee and some Banh Mi. It was a great way to start the day. The Cao Cao Grasshopper Restaurant is a cool spot right in Hoi An with a great breakfast menu with gluten-free and vegetarian options. I am glad that we found it.

Our first stop was the iconic Chùa Cầu, the Japanese Covered Bridge. It's funny, I remember reading about it before we left Amsterdam, and seeing so many photos, but nothing prepared me for the reality. The bridge is currently under renovation. It was a bummer that we couldn't experience it fully, but even behind the scaffolding, its historical significance was palpable. Built in the 1590s, it stands as a testament to the cultural exchange between the Japanese and Chinese communities in Hoi An. I learned that the bridge was constructed by the Japanese community and it has been well maintained since then. I was able to peek through the scaffolding and see some of the original features, including the guardian statues of dogs and monkeys, which are said to represent the birth years of Japanese emperors. Despite the construction, the bridge remains a symbol of Hoi An's rich history.

Afterward, we ventured to the Hoi An Memories Land. It’s a sprawling complex that includes a theme park, resort, and the Hoi An Memories Theater. The park itself is designed to transport you back in time, with different sections showcasing the town's 400-year history. I was particularly impressed by the traditional themed village, which vividly brought to life the golden era of Hoi An as a bustling trading port. We explored pagodas, temples, and shrines, each telling a story of the deep spiritual connection of the Vietnamese people. I was really impressed by the vibrant colors and the attention to detail. It felt like stepping into a living museum.

We had lunch at Red Dragon Restaurant and Cooking Class. It was an amazing culinary experience. The restaurant is family-run and has been around since 2007. They focus on creative and sophisticated dishes based on classic Hoi An cuisine. We took a cooking class and learned how to make some of the local favorites. I was so proud of myself when I managed to recreate the flavors of Cao Lau. Jan was very impressed with my cooking skills. I think I might start incorporating some Vietnamese dishes into our regular meal rotation back in Amsterdam.

In the evening, we experienced the highlight of the day: the Hoi An Memories Show. This large art show features hundreds of performers who take over the outdoor stage in traditional Ao Dai costumes and modern staging techniques. The show takes the audience on a voyage back in time to the Faifo trading port 400 years ago, allowing them to experience the beauty and unique culture of Hoi An. I was completely mesmerized by the performance. The combination of music, lights, and the sheer scale of the production was breathtaking. It told the story of Hoi An's history in such a vivid and engaging way, making it one of the most memorable experiences of the trip so far. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Hoi An.

After the show, we decided to have dinner at Mr. Sơn Restaurant. This place is known for its traditional Vietnamese cuisine. We tried some of their specialties, including the Cao Lau and the white rose dumplings. The food was delicious and the ambiance was cozy and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a busy day.

Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped by the Hoi An Specialty Shop (THU CANH) for some souvenirs. I found some beautiful silk scarves and some local tea to bring back home to Amsterdam. I love supporting local artisans and bringing back unique reminders of my travels.

Finally, we ended our day with a nightcap at The Deck Hoi An. This rooftop bar offers stunning views of the city and the Thu Bon River. It was the perfect spot to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. The ambiance was chill and the cocktails were delicious. I especially enjoyed the happy hour.

Reflecting on today, I am reminded of how much there is to discover in this world. Each day brings new experiences, new flavors, and new perspectives. Hoi An has a special way of making you feel connected to the past while embracing the present.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit The Marble Mountains and An Bang Beach. I am excited to explore more of the natural beauty that this region has to offer. I am also looking forward to trying some of the local seafood at the Hoi An Riverside Restaurant for breakfast. I think Jan is particularly excited about An Bang Beach, as he is really looking forward to some beach time. I am definitely looking forward to visiting the Tra Que Minty Garden for lunch. I have heard great things about their fresh herbs and vegetables. I am also planning to do some shopping at the BLOOM HOI AN STORE. I have heard they have some really unique items. And in the evening, we are planning to visit Mezcal Cocteleria [ Hoi An Bar] for some cocktails. It sounds like a great way to relax and unwind after a busy day of exploring.

Until then, xin chào from Hoi An!

P.S. I almost forgot! I did manage to find a travel adapter at the Hoi An Specialty Shop, so at least I can charge my devices now. And I am definitely going to pick up a raincoat tomorrow before we head out, just in case. Better to be prepared than caught in the rain!
