Day 8: Desert Dreams and Berber Beats: A Day of Discovery in Merzouga
Immerse yourself in the magic of Merzouga! Explore the Sahara, savor local cuisine, and dance the night away under the Moroccan stars.
A Day of Moroccan Magic
The Sahara has a way of captivating you, doesn't it? It's more than just sand; it's a feeling, an experience that seeps into your soul. Today in Merzouga was a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and tastes, a true immersion into the heart of Morocco. From exploring the desert landscapes to savoring local flavors and dancing under the stars, it was a day I won't soon forget.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Resturant Nora. I opted for the Berber pizza, a local specialty that Emmanuelle Durand on Google describes as excellent. It was a delightful mix of flavors, a savory start to a day filled with adventure. The restaurant itself had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. It felt like a true taste of Moroccan hospitality, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead.

After breakfast, we decided to See Around Morocco, taking in the vastness of the landscape. The seemingly endless dunes of the Merzouga Desert were calling our names. The golden sand stretched out before us, sculpted by the wind into breathtaking formations. I couldn't resist kicking off my shoes and feeling the warm grains beneath my feet, a grounding sensation that connected me to the ancient soul of the Sahara. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys in life.

Venturing deeper into the desert, we stopped for lunch at Snack chez Toufik. I decided to try the lamb tagine with raisins, which I had read was one of the best meals in town. It was an explosion of flavors, the tender lamb melting in my mouth, complemented by the sweetness of the raisins and the warmth of the spices. Jan went for a sandwich, and we both enjoyed some freshly made juice. The friendly staff made the experience even more enjoyable, and I even managed to pick up a few Darija/Toureg phrases.

The desert is a vast and timeless canvas, where every grain of sand tells a story of resilience, beauty, and the enduring spirit of life.
As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, we found ourselves drawn back to the mesmerizing dunes of Erg Chebbi. I had heard so much about the sunset camel rides, and while we didn't opt for that particular experience today, we did find a high dune to watch the spectacle unfold. The sky exploded in a riot of colors – fiery oranges, soft pinks, and deep purples – painting a masterpiece across the vast expanse. It was a moment of collective awe as everyone around us fell silent, captivated by the sheer beauty of nature. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience, a memory I would cherish forever.
With the sun now fully set, and a chill in the air, it was time for dinner at L'Homme du Désert. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly attentive. I opted for a traditional Moroccan dish, savoring the rich flavors and spices that danced on my palate. The food was delicious and affordable, and the rooms were comfortable and impeccably clean. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and exploration.

But the night wasn't over yet! We decided to check out Riad Tighmart Merzouga, which I had heard was a popular spot. The music was infectious, and the atmosphere was electric. We danced the night away under the starlit sky, surrounded by fellow travelers and locals, all united by the universal language of music. It was a joyous celebration of life, a perfect ending to an unforgettable day.

As I reflect on today, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Merzouga has exceeded all my expectations, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality. The Sahara has truly cast its spell on me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I'm particularly excited about our plans to visit Merzouga Attractions Erg Chebbi and the Sahara Desert Luxury Camp. Before heading there, I'm planning to stop by Dépôt Nomade. I'm hoping to find a unique souvenir to remind me of this magical place.
I'm also grateful to be sharing this adventure with my friends. Their laughter and camaraderie have made this experience even more special, creating memories that will last a lifetime. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people and creating shared experiences.
I'm also glad I remembered to pack my sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, lightweight clothing, camera, and reusable water bottle. I’m a bit bummed that I forgot my portable charger and travel pillow. I will definitely need to purchase a portable charger tomorrow before we head out.
The weather in Merzouga in November is quite pleasant. The average temperature ranges from a high of 72°F (22°C) to a low of 48°F (9°C). It's also relatively dry, with only a 5% chance of rain on an average day. This makes it the perfect time to explore the desert and enjoy all that Merzouga has to offer.
It's been a long but fulfilling day, and as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile. Merzouga has captured my heart, and I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. The Sahara is calling, and I must go!
I am so happy that Jan encouraged me to step away from my sustainable fashion startup job in Amsterdam and experience new adventures. I feel so refreshed and ready to take on my next project. I’m also excited to get back to Amsterdam to work in my community garden.
I am also reminded of the importance of sustainable living while experiencing the beauty of Morocco. I am committed to continuing to learn and grow in this area, and I hope to inspire others to do the same.
