First Steps into the Sahara

The air is different here, a dry warmth that wraps around you like a familiar blanket. After a long journey from Amsterdam, trading canals for caravans, I've finally arrived in the Merzouga Region, ready to embrace the Sahara with open arms. The promise of endless dunes and vibrant Berber culture is intoxicating, and I can already tell this adventure with my friends will be one for the books.

Our journey began in Marrakech, where we landed after our flight from Amsterdam. The drive to Merzouga was an adventure in itself, a scenic route that offered a sneak peek into the diverse landscapes of Morocco. From the bustling cityscapes to the serene countryside, every mile was a new experience. The anticipation grew with each passing town, and soon, the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi appeared on the horizon, signaling our arrival.

Our first stop was the Sahara Trips Company, where we met our guides for the desert excursions. Their warm welcome and expert knowledge immediately put us at ease. I felt a surge of excitement as we discussed the adventures that awaited us in the coming days.

Fuelled by anticipation, we headed to Café Restaurant Rimal Merzouga for breakfast. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea and local pastries. The flavors were a delightful explosion in my mouth, a perfect introduction to the culinary delights of the region. The café's cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a memorable start to our day.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we ventured into the heart of Merzouga. Lunch was at Cafe Restaurant Merzouga, where we savored a delicious tagine, a slow-cooked stew that's a staple of Moroccan cuisine. The rich flavors and tender meat were a testament to the art of Moroccan cooking.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures begin with simply saying 'yes' to the unknown.

After lunch, we explored Merzouga Nomadic Art Crafts, a local shop showcasing the intricate artistry of Berber artisans. I was mesmerized by the vibrant colors and detailed designs of the handcrafted carpets, jewelry, and pottery. I couldn't resist purchasing a beautiful Berber necklace as a memento of my journey. Supporting local artisans is important to me, aligning with my passion for sustainable and ethical travel.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we embarked on the Merzouga Desert Experience. This included a camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes. The experience was surreal, as we traversed the undulating landscape on these gentle giants, feeling like characters in an age-old caravan. The rhythmic sway of the camels and the panoramic views of the Sahara created a sense of peace and wonder. It was magical.

The sunset over the Sahara was nothing short of breathtaking. The sky transformed into a canvas of fiery hues, painting the dunes in shades of orange, pink, and gold. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the raw beauty of nature. I captured the scene with my camera, hoping to preserve the memory forever. I was glad Jan wasn't here, as much as I love him, these moments of solitude really allow me to connect with the earth and myself.

As darkness enveloped the desert, we made our way to Restaurant Berbere Palace Hotel Merzouga for dinner. The restaurant offered a cozy and inviting ambiance, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. I savored a traditional Berber meal, complete with couscous and grilled meats, while enjoying live music under the starlit sky. The experience was a celebration of Berber culture, a testament to their warm hospitality and rich heritage.

The weather today was perfect, with daytime temperatures hovering around 24°C, cooling down to a comfortable 11°C in the evening. The clear skies and gentle breeze added to the magic of the Sahara, making it an ideal day for exploration and adventure.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore the Lala Lallia Gran Dune and Erg Chebbi, immersing myself further in the beauty of the Sahara. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at the Kasbah Merzouga Bar, soaking in the vibrant nightlife of the desert. Before that we will have breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Zahra, lunch at La Grotte Dunes Restaurant and dinner at Cafe Restaurant Chez Youssef.

As I reflect on my first day in the Sahara, I'm filled with gratitude and excitement. This adventure is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with different cultures and embracing new experiences. The Sahara has already cast its spell on me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

A few things I forgot to pack were a portable charger and a travel pillow. I will need to buy a portable charger tomorrow, as I want to make sure I can keep capturing these wonderful moments, and I might also see if I can find a travel pillow in one of the local shops.

Tonight, as I lay my head down, I’m filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. The Sahara is full of surprises, and I’m ready to embrace them all.
