Day 7: A Day of Eagles, Parks, and Pottery in Chefchaouen
Discover Chefchaouen's hidden gems: soaring eagles, tranquil parks, and vibrant ceramics. A day of cultural immersion and natural beauty.
A Bird's-Eye View and Artistic Treasures
Today was a delightful blend of nature, art, and local flavors, a true immersion into the heart of Chefchaouen. From panoramic views to handcrafted ceramics, every moment was a vibrant experience that deepened my appreciation for this blue-washed city. It's amazing how much you can discover when you simply embrace the day and allow yourself to wander.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at MIDO'S. I opted for a traditional Moroccan pancake, Msemen, with honey and a strong, sweet mint tea. Fuelled up, I set off to explore the attractions Chefchaouen had in store for me today.
First on the list was the Hero Eagle. The walk there was invigorating, the crisp January air nipping at my cheeks. January in Chefchaouen is quite mild, with temperatures ranging from 4°C to 15°C, so layering is key. The sky was clear, promising stunning views. As I ascended, the city unfolded beneath me, a mesmerizing tapestry of blue hues stretching across the Rif Mountains. The Hero Eagle itself is more of a viewpoint, but the panoramic vista it offers is simply breathtaking. I spent a good hour there, soaking it all in and capturing photos from every angle. It's a perfect spot to appreciate the unique architecture and the serene atmosphere of Chefchaouen.

From the heights of Hero Eagle, I ventured to Park Sidi Abdelhamid, seeking a tranquil escape amidst the city's bustle. The park, though not expansive, offered a welcome respite with its lush greenery and peaceful ambiance. I found a quiet bench and simply sat, observing the local families enjoying their day. Children laughed as they played, their joy echoing through the crisp air. It was a simple yet profound reminder of the beauty of everyday life. The park provided a serene contrast to the vibrant energy of the medina, a perfect spot for reflection and a moment of calm. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I observed the park's well-maintained gardens and green spaces, reflecting the community's commitment to preserving their natural environment.

Lunch was at Restaurant Dar El Salam, a cozy spot recommended by a local I met at the park. I decided to try the Tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew cooked in a clay pot. It was flavorful, rich, and utterly satisfying. It was the perfect way to warm up after a morning spent exploring outdoors. The restaurant itself was charming, with traditional Moroccan decor and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. It felt like stepping into someone's home, adding to the authenticity of the experience. Restaurants in Chefchaouen offer a delightful culinary journey, with each dish telling a story of Moroccan tradition and hospitality.
Exploring Chefchaouen is like stepping into a living painting, where every corner reveals a new shade of blue and a deeper connection to the soul.
After lunch, I was ready to immerse myself in the local arts scene. Aboor Art and Ceramics was my next destination. This shop is a treasure trove of handcrafted ceramics and traditional Moroccan art. As a social media manager for a sustainable fashion startup, I'm always drawn to businesses that celebrate local craftsmanship and cultural heritage. Aboor Art and Ceramics did not disappoint. The shop was filled with vibrant colors and intricate designs, each piece reflecting the skill and passion of the artisans behind it. I spent hours browsing, admiring the beautifully painted plates, bowls, and decorative items. I even picked up a few small pieces as gifts for Jan and our friends back in Amsterdam, wanting to share a piece of Chefchaouen's artistic soul with them.

The experience at Aboor Art and Ceramics was more than just shopping; it was an immersion into Moroccan culture. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing stories about the artisans and the techniques used in their creations. It was inspiring to see how they were preserving and promoting traditional crafts, empowering local communities through their work. Dinner was at Restaurant Hamsa, located in the main square. I had read great reviews about their vegetarian options, and as someone who enjoys exploring global cuisine, I was eager to try it out. The restaurant boasts a rooftop terrace with stunning views of the blue houses, creating a magical ambiance. I ordered the falafel plate and some mint tea, savoring the flavors as I watched the sunset over the city. The food was delicious, and the view was simply unforgettable. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, the city was bathed in the soft glow of the streetlights. The sounds of music and laughter filled the air, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. I couldn't help but smile, feeling grateful for the experiences I had today. Chefchaouen had captured my heart with its beauty, culture, and warm hospitality. I am also grateful that I remembered to pack my Ankara print outfits, which have been a hit with the locals.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Jamaa and Sidi Bouchouka photo spot, hoping to capture more of Chefchaouen's unique charm through my lens. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Cafe Clock, a popular spot known for its relaxed atmosphere and delicious food. Each day here brings new adventures, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds. I will also remember to pack my portable phone charger, which I forgot today and almost ran out of battery.
Chefchaouen continues to surprise and delight me, and I'm excited to share more of my journey with you. Stay tuned for more updates from the blue city!
Oh, and I was so happy to see a flyer about an Introduction to Web Development course taking place today in Casablanca. It's great to see Morocco embracing technology and innovation.
Also, I have noticed that local women often wear a red and white striped garment around their lower body and a traditional hat called “Taraza”. It's a beautiful testament to their commitment to preserving their cultural identity. I am really glad I chose Chefchaouen as my travel destination.
