A Friday in Blue

Today was a day of wandering, of letting the blue embrace me and guide my steps through Chefchaouen. It’s amazing how a single color can evoke such a sense of peace and wonder. I set out this morning with no particular agenda, just a desire to soak in the atmosphere of this unique town.

The morning began with breakfast at Amigo. I had heard wonderful things about their traditional Moroccan breakfast, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was cozy, with colorful mosaics that made me feel right at home. I savored the ftour beldi, a local breakfast of goat cheese, eggs, and olive oil, while enjoying the lively atmosphere. The owner was incredibly welcoming, making sure every guest felt at home. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. Fuelled and ready, I decided to head towards Jamaa, known as the White Mosque of the Souk. I wanted to witness it myself, especially after seeing so many photos of its stark white facade against the blue backdrop of the town.

As I walked, I noticed how the morning light painted the blue walls in different shades, creating a mesmerizing effect. The streets were still relatively quiet, with only a few locals starting their day. I passed by small shops selling colorful textiles and intricate metalwork, each a testament to the rich artisanal culture of Chefchaouen. I made a mental note to return later for some souvenir shopping. I have to remember to buy something for Jan, to show him I was thinking about him, even though I am all the way here in Morocco, and he is back in Amsterdam.

Reaching Jamaa, I was struck by its simplicity and elegance. The white walls stood out against the surrounding blue, creating a striking contrast. I took my time to admire the architecture and the peaceful ambiance, reflecting on the spiritual significance of the place. The mosque was serene, a quiet escape from the bustling streets. I took some photos, trying to capture the essence of the place, the way the light played on the white walls, the sense of calm that permeated the air. I thought about the people who came here to pray, to find solace, to connect with something greater than themselves. I felt a sense of connection too, a sense of belonging, as if I had found a place where I could simply be.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of places.

Afterward, I decided to seek out the famous Sidi Bouchouka photo spot. It's a location that every travel blogger seems to rave about, and I was keen to see it for myself. Navigating through the labyrinthine streets, I finally found it – a picturesque alleyway with vibrant blue walls, colorful tiles, and an array of potted plants. It was indeed a photographer’s dream. I spent a good hour there, experimenting with different angles and compositions, trying to capture the perfect shot. I even met a few fellow travelers, all equally captivated by the beauty of the place. We exchanged tips and stories, sharing our experiences of Chefchaouen and beyond. It was a reminder of the connections that travel can forge, the shared sense of wonder that unites people from different corners of the world. I made sure to get that shot for Instagram, you know I had to! I might even make it my new profile picture, to be honest. I think it is that good.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant populaire, a local eatery known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. I ordered a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, and savored every bite. The flavors were rich and complex, a delightful blend of spices and herbs. It was a true culinary experience, a taste of Morocco that I would not soon forget. As I ate, I listened to the conversations around me, the mix of Arabic, French, and English, the sounds of laughter and chatter. It was a vibrant tapestry of cultures, a reminder of the diversity of the world and the shared human experience of food and community.

As the afternoon wore on, I sought refuge from the midday sun at Cafe Clock. I had heard about their unique menu and the cultural events they hosted, and I was curious to experience it for myself. The cafe was cozy and inviting, with a rooftop terrace offering stunning views of the city. I ordered a refreshing mint tea and relaxed, soaking in the atmosphere. The cafe was alive with activity, people chatting, reading, and playing music. I felt a sense of belonging, as if I had found a community of like-minded souls. I checked their schedule and was delighted to see that they had live Oud music scheduled for the evening. Oud music on a Friday night? I think yes!

Before heading back to Cafe Clock, I had dinner at Restaurant Ali Baba. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with a mix of Arabian and Spanish styles. The service was warm and attentive, and the menu offered a wide range of traditional Moroccan dishes. I indulged in a couscous dish, savoring the delicate flavors and textures. It was the perfect ending to a day of culinary exploration. I had some vegan options there, which was great. I am not fully vegan, but I do try to eat plant based when I am able to. It is something that is very important to Jan and I, as we try to live a more sustainable lifestyle. It is not always easy, but we try our best.

As evening approached, I made my way back to Cafe Clock for the live music. The rooftop terrace was packed, filled with people eager to enjoy the performance. The music was enchanting, the melodies weaving a spell that transported me to another world. I closed my eyes and let the music wash over me, feeling a sense of peace and contentment. It was a perfect moment, a culmination of a day of discovery and connection. I thought about Jan, and how much he would have loved this. I made a mental note to bring him here someday, to share this experience with him.

Tomorrow marks the last day of my solo adventure in Chefchaouen. I plan to visit Bab Chaouen and the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen. I also plan to do some shopping at Jabir shop chefchaouen. I am excited to explore more of this beautiful city, but I am also looking forward to returning home, to sharing my stories and experiences with Jan.

As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I am filled with gratitude for this day, for this experience, for this journey. Chefchaouen has captured my heart, its blue walls and vibrant culture leaving an indelible mark on my soul. It is a place I will never forget, a place I will always cherish. And as I drift off to sleep, I dream of blue, of music, of connection, of Morocco.
