Solo Adventure in the Blue City of Chefchaouen
Day 9: Farewell to the Blue Pearl: Reflecting on My Chefchaouen Journey
A final day of cultural immersion in Chefchaouen, exploring local markets, museums, and savoring the last moments in the blue city.
A Blue Goodbye
As my journey in Chefchaouen comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant experiences and serene moments I've encountered in this blue-washed city. Today was all about soaking in the last bits of its unique charm, from exploring its cultural corners to savoring its delicious cuisine. It's hard to believe my solo adventure is drawing to a close, but I'm leaving with a heart full of memories and a camera roll bursting with images of this enchanting place.
The morning began with a delightful breakfast at BILMOS. The reviews I'd read online raved about their vegan options, and they weren't wrong! I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast with a vegan twist, enjoying the cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. BILMOS is known for its welcoming vibe, and I can attest to that [I must have a vegan vibe!]. The food was excellent, and it was the perfect way to start my last day in Chefchaouen. It’s funny, I feel like I’ve developed a bit of a mint tea habit during this trip, and I made sure to have one last glass before heading out.

With a satisfied stomach, I decided to immerse myself in local culture with a visit to Bab Chaouen. I was immediately struck by the intricate details and the historical significance of the gate. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining all the travelers who had passed through this very entrance over the centuries. The structure itself was a sight to behold, a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the region. It was a perfect spot to pause and absorb the history of Chefchaouen before diving deeper into the day's explorations. The weather was moderately chilly, with the temperature around 15°C, so I was glad I had my Ankara print jacket to keep me warm.

“Travel is not about the destination, but the connections we make along the way.”
Next on my list was the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen. Housed within the Kasbah, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's history and culture. I wandered through the exhibits, admiring traditional costumes, musical instruments, and ancient weapons. It was a great way to learn more about the Berber, Arab, and Andalusian influences that have shaped Chefchaouen over the centuries. The museum is not just a collection of artifacts; it's a vibrant tapestry of stories and traditions that have been passed down through generations. It was fascinating to see how art, craft, and trade evolved in the region, from prehistoric hand tools to modern-day creations. There were separate workshops dedicated to plaster carving and mosaic works, showcasing the intricate skills of local artisans.

After soaking up the history at the museum, it was time for lunch. I headed to Restaurant Bab Ssour, known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. I had read about their vegan starters and was eager to try them. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. I ordered a variety of vegan dishes, including bean and lentil dishes, fava bean soup, and Moroccan salads. The food came out quickly, and the prices were very reasonable. It was my best meal in Morocco so far! I really enjoyed the range of vegan starters, and the flavors were authentic and satisfying. The restaurant is located in the medina, not far from Plaza Uta el-Hammam, making it a convenient stop during my explorations.

With my appetite sated, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Jabir shop chefchaouen. The shop was filled with unique and beautiful items, perfect for souvenirs. The owner was incredibly kind and didn't put any pressure on me to buy anything. He took the time to chat with me and make me feel welcome, which was a refreshing change from some of the other shops in Morocco. I ended up buying a beautiful Ankara print scarf as a memento of my trip. Jabir shop is known for its high-quality products and reasonable prices, and I can definitely vouch for that. The owner's friendly demeanor and the shop's cozy atmosphere made it a delightful experience. I even got some tips from him on other places to visit in the city.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to dinner at RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ. The restaurant is known for its Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisines, and I was excited to try their chicken and couscous dishes. The restaurant has a calm atmosphere and friendly staff, making it a pleasant place to relax and enjoy a meal. While the Google reviews weren't exceptionally high, I decided to give it a try, and I wasn't disappointed. The chicken was perfectly cooked, and the couscous was flavorful and satisfying. The restaurant also offers a great view, adding to the overall dining experience. It was a perfect way to end my last day in Chefchaouen, savoring the flavors of Morocco while reflecting on my journey.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took one last stroll through the blue streets of Chefchaouen. The city was even more magical at night, with the soft glow of the streetlights illuminating the blue walls. I paused to listen to the sounds of the city, the chatter of locals, and the distant music drifting from the cafes. It was a bittersweet moment, knowing that my time in Chefchaouen was coming to an end. But I was grateful for the experiences I had, the people I met, and the memories I made. I really wanted to absorb every last bit of the city's unique ambiance. I found a quiet corner, sat down, and simply watched the world go by. It was a perfect way to say goodbye to the Blue Pearl of Morocco.
As I prepare to leave Chefchaouen tomorrow, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. This solo trip has been an incredible journey of self-discovery and cultural immersion. I've learned so much about myself and the world around me. I've embraced the challenges, celebrated the triumphs, and savored every moment in between. I'm excited to return to Amsterdam and share my stories with Jan, and perhaps even inspire others to embark on their own solo adventures. Although I didn’t get to cycle through Amsterdam’s canals, or volunteer at a community garden, I did get to immerse myself in a new culture.
Chefchaouen, you will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for the blue memories and the warm hospitality. Until we meet again!
Tomorrow marks the end of my trip, and I'll be heading back to Tangier to catch my flight to Amsterdam. It's been an unforgettable journey, and I can't wait to share more stories and photos on my blog. Stay tuned for my final reflections on this solo adventure in the Blue City of Chefchaouen!
I'm already thinking about my next adventure, and I'm excited to see where my travels will take me next. Perhaps I'll explore more of Morocco, or maybe I'll venture to a new continent altogether. The world is full of possibilities, and I'm eager to discover them all.
Until next time, happy travels!
