Whispers of Zerhoun
Today, Jan and I ventured deeper into the heart of Morocco, exploring the lesser-known yet profoundly captivating region of Zerhoun. Far from the bustling tourist trails, we found ourselves immersed in a landscape rich with history, spirituality, and breathtaking vistas. It was a day of simple pleasures, authentic encounters, and a deeper appreciation for the soul of Morocco.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at SCORPION HOUSE. The sun was just beginning to paint the sky with hues of orange and pink as we sat on the terrace, overlooking the sprawling landscape. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of olive groves and distant wildflowers. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen (buttery pancakes), honey, and mint tea, while Jan enjoyed some fresh fruit and yogurt. The views from Scorpion House were truly incredible, offering a panoramic vista of Moulay Idriss. It's a climb up the narrow medina streets, but so worth it!

After breakfast, we set out to explore the town of Zerhoun itself. This mountain, located north of Meknes, is a sight to behold. We learned that on this hill lies the town of Moulay Idris Zerhoun, named after Moulay Idris I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty, who was buried here in 791 AD. The town is nestled at the foot of Mount Zerhoun, a place of pilgrimage and spiritual significance. As we wandered through the narrow, winding streets, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. The whitewashed buildings, adorned with vibrant blue and green accents, seemed to whisper stories of centuries past. The town’s main attraction, the mausoleum of Idris I, is unfortunately off-limits to non-Muslims, but even from the outside, its beauty was evident.
We then visited DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN, a guesthouse housed in a historic building. What a place! The property features a sun terrace, restaurant, and free WiFi throughout.

In the heart of Zerhoun, we discovered a timeless beauty that resonated deeply with our souls, reminding us that the most profound travel experiences often lie in the simplest of moments.
For lunch, we ventured to Grillade Albanna, a local eatery known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. We savored a delicious tagine, cooked with tender lamb, vegetables, and aromatic spices. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the culinary traditions of the region. Jan, ever the adventurous eater, tried the kefta and declared it to be the best he'd ever had. As we ate, we chatted with the friendly owner, who shared stories about his family and the history of the restaurant. It was a simple meal, but it was made all the more special by the warmth and hospitality of the people we encountered.

In the late afternoon, we decided to indulge in a bit of relaxation at Dar Zerhoune. We enjoyed some mint tea on the terrace. The view from the terrace was amazing! Dar Zerhoune is located in the center of Moulay Idriss, this guest house offers a rooftop terrace with views of the surrounding mountains and the Roman ruins of Volubilis, located 5 km away. Excursions and cooking lessons can be organised by the guest house.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Dar Zerhoune, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere and stunning views. We sipped on refreshing drinks as we watched the sky transform into a canvas of vibrant colors. The air was filled with music and laughter, as locals and tourists alike gathered to celebrate the end of another beautiful day in Morocco.
For dinner, we chose Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, a traditional Moroccan house with panoramic views. We enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled meats, couscous, and fresh salads. The flavors were bold and satisfying, a perfect end to a day of exploration and discovery. The owner was so kind, and the breakfast was amazing. The terrace offered a beautiful view of the surrounding area.

Reflecting on our day in Zerhoun, I am struck by the simple beauty and authenticity of this region. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where traditions are cherished, and where the warmth of the people shines through in every encounter. As we prepare for our adventures in Meknes tomorrow, where we plan to visit Bab Boujloud and Khemis Gate, I know that the memories of Zerhoun will stay with me long after we leave.
Tomorrow, we're off to Meknes! Jan and I are excited to explore Bab Boujloud and Khemis Gate. I am particularly looking forward to visiting The Anou Cooperative. I have heard wonderful things about their craftsmanship, and I am eager to find some unique souvenirs to bring home to Layla and our friends in Delft. It's always a joy to share a piece of our travels with loved ones.
As I sit here, penning down the day’s events, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences we’ve had. Morocco continues to surprise and enchant me at every turn. It is a land of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet modern aspirations, and where the beauty of the landscape is matched only by the warmth of its people. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, but for now, I will cherish the memories of our day in Zerhoun, a hidden gem that has captured a piece of my heart. I must remember to buy a local SIM card tomorrow, as I forgot it today. I also need to remember to charge my portable phone charger, as that also slipped my mind this morning.
The call to prayer echoes in the distance, a soothing melody that wraps around the town like a gentle embrace. I close my eyes and take a deep breath, grateful for this moment, this place, this journey with my beloved Jan.
