Day 3: A Day of Emperors and Artisans: Delving into Kyoto's Royal Past and Crafting Future
Exploring Kyoto's imperial history at Nijo Castle and Kyoto Imperial Palace, followed by artisan discoveries. A day of culture!
Echoes of Emperors and Shoguns
Today felt like stepping directly into the pages of a history book. From the majestic Nijō Castle to the serene Kyoto Imperial Palace and the calming Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, every corner of Kyoto whispered tales of emperors, shoguns, and the intricate dance of power that shaped this captivating city. The day concluded with a delightful exploration of local crafts, a testament to Kyoto's enduring artistic spirit.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Cellar Kyoto. The cozy atmosphere and delicious food set the perfect tone for a day of exploration. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the energy it provided for the adventures ahead. Hans always says I need a good breakfast to keep me going, and he was absolutely right today!
Our first stop was Nijō Castle, a place where the echoes of shoguns resonate through the ages. Built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, it served as the Kyoto residence for the Tokugawa shogunate. The sheer scale of the castle was impressive, but it was the intricate details of the Ninomaru Palace that truly captivated me. The 'nightingale floors', designed to chirp underfoot to alert the occupants to intruders, were an ingenious security measure. Walking through the palace, I could almost envision the shoguns of old, conducting affairs of state amidst the opulent surroundings.

History is not just a collection of dates and events; it's a living narrative that shapes our present and inspires our future.
The gardens surrounding the palace were equally stunning, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling city. I took a moment to appreciate the meticulously manicured landscapes, the serene ponds, and the ancient trees that have stood witness to centuries of history. It was fascinating to learn that after the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Nijō Castle served as an imperial palace before being opened to the public as a historic site. This transition from shogunate power to imperial residence speaks volumes about the changing tides of Japanese history.
Next on our itinerary was the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the former residence of the Emperor of Japan. The palace is located in the expansive Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, a sprawling green space that offers a respite from the urban landscape. As I wandered through the palace grounds, I was struck by the simplicity and elegance of the architecture. Unlike the opulent Nijō Castle, the Imperial Palace exuded a sense of understated refinement, reflecting the Emperor's role as a symbol of cultural and spiritual authority.

The history of the Kyoto Imperial Palace is as rich and complex as the city itself. For centuries, it served as the center of imperial power, witnessing countless ceremonies, celebrations, and political intrigues. Even after the capital was moved to Tokyo in 1869, the palace continued to hold significance, with Emperors Taishō and Shōwa both holding their enthronement ceremonies here. Walking through the Shishinden, the Hall for State Ceremonies, I felt a profound connection to Japan's imperial past.
After immersing ourselves in imperial history, we took a leisurely stroll through the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. This vast green space, once the exclusive domain of the imperial family and court nobles, is now a public park where locals and tourists alike can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. The garden is meticulously maintained, with winding paths, serene ponds, and a variety of trees and flowers that change with the seasons. It was the perfect place to reflect on the day's adventures and soak in the peaceful atmosphere of Kyoto.

For lunch, we ventured to Komefuku, a local restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. I decided to try their tempura, and it was absolutely divine. The batter was light and crispy, and the seafood was incredibly fresh. It was a delightful culinary experience that provided a glimpse into the flavors of Kyoto.

In the afternoon, I was eager to explore Kyoto's vibrant craft scene. I had heard so much about the city's rich artistic heritage, and I was excited to see it firsthand. We visited the Kyoto Crafts Store, a treasure trove of handcrafted goods ranging from traditional ceramics to contemporary designs. I was mesmerized by the skill and artistry of the local artisans, each piece telling a story of dedication and passion. I picked up a few small items as souvenirs, each one a reminder of the beauty and craftsmanship of Kyoto.

As someone who has always been passionate about cultural heritage preservation, I was particularly impressed by Kyoto's commitment to preserving its traditional crafts. From Nishijin textiles to Kiyomizu pottery, the city is home to a wide range of artistic traditions that have been passed down through generations. I believe that it is essential to support these traditions, as they represent a unique and valuable part of our shared human heritage.
Dinner was at Jiki Miyazawa, a Kaiseki restaurant that promised an unforgettable culinary experience. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance and refinement. The restaurant's interior was exquisitely designed, with traditional Japanese elements blended seamlessly with modern aesthetics. The service was impeccable, with the staff attending to our every need with grace and attentiveness.

From the imperial palaces to the artisan workshops to the exquisite cuisine, every aspect of this city has left an indelible mark on my soul. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, as we continue our journey through this enchanting land. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Gion, Yasaka Shrine, and Hanamikoji Street, and perhaps enjoy a drink at The Common One Bar Kyoto. I am particularly excited to see Gion, as I have heard so much about its traditional wooden machiya houses and its geishas.
Before drifting off to sleep, I chatted with Hans about the day. We both agreed that Nijō Castle was the most impressive site, due to the sheer scale and grandeur. He was impressed by the defensive features of the castle, while I was more interested in the art and architecture. It’s always interesting to see what aspects of a place resonate with different people. We also talked about the importance of preserving cultural heritage, and how we can support local artisans and businesses when we travel. It’s something that we are both passionate about, and we always try to make conscious choices that will benefit the communities we visit.
