Whispers of Gold and Stone

Today, on the fifth day of our Kyoto adventure, I embarked on a journey that resonated deeply with my soul. It was a day of temples, gardens, and quiet contemplation, a day where the whispers of the past echoed in the serene landscapes of Kyoto. Leaving behind the modern comforts of the Prince Smart Inn Kyoto Sanjo, I stepped into a world where time seemed to slow, and the beauty of simplicity spoke volumes. It was a day for reflection, a day for connection, and a day that reminded me why I cherish these journeys of cultural immersion so much.

Our first stop, Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, was nothing short of breathtaking. As we approached, the shimmering reflection of the pavilion on the Mirror Pond greeted us, a sight that felt almost surreal. The Friends and I stood there, captivated by the sheer beauty of it all. The meticulous gold leaf work gleamed under the gentle morning sun, a testament to the artistry and dedication of those who rebuilt it after the tragic fire in 1950. I learned that the gold was intended to mitigate any negative thoughts and feelings towards death, which resonated with me deeply, reminding me of the importance of finding light even in the darkest of times.

Walking around the pond, I tried to capture the perfect photograph, but no image could truly do justice to the scene before me. The way the light danced on the water, the subtle breeze rustling the leaves of the surrounding trees, it was an experience that engaged all the senses. I thought about my daughter, Leila, and how she would marvel at the sight of the Golden Pavilion. I made a mental note to find a detailed picture book about Kinkaku-ji for her when I return to Potsdam, hoping to share a piece of this magic with her.

The essence of Zen lies not in grand gestures, but in the subtle art of finding peace within simplicity.

Leaving the dazzling Kinkaku-ji behind, we ventured to Ryoan-ji, a world away in its aesthetic. Where Kinkaku-ji overwhelmed with its opulence, Ryoan-ji whispered with its understated elegance. This Zen temple is home to Japan's most famous rock garden. As I sat on the wooden platform, gazing at the fifteen rocks arranged meticulously in a sea of white gravel, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The garden invited contemplation, a quiet dialogue with oneself. It was fascinating to learn that no matter where you stand, one of the rocks remains hidden, a subtle reminder of the imperfections inherent in life. It reminded me of the challenges I faced when I first arrived in Germany, the hidden obstacles and the constant need to adapt and learn.

The Friends and I discussed the various interpretations of the garden – some believe it represents islands in the sea, others a tiger carrying her cubs. For me, it felt like a blank canvas, a space for my mind to wander and find its own meaning. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and let the silence of the garden fill my soul. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the power of simplicity and the importance of finding stillness amidst the chaos of life.

Our final temple of the day was Ninna-ji, a World Heritage Site with a rich imperial history. Founded in 888 by Emperor Uda, Ninna-ji exuded a sense of grace and tranquility. The vast complex, with its five-story pagoda and beautifully painted screen walls, offered a glimpse into the lives of emperors and aristocratic priests. As I wandered through the gardens, I was particularly drawn to the Omuro cherry trees, known for their late-blooming blossoms. Although the peak of the season had passed, a few delicate blossoms still clung to the branches, a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of beauty. The scale of Ninna-ji was impressive, and I found myself reflecting on the enduring legacy of Japanese culture and the importance of preserving these historical treasures for future generations.

In the late afternoon, before dinner, we decided to visit Kyoto Yaoichi Honkan, a grocery store. The place was amazing, offering a wide variety of local and international foods. I bought some ingredients to try and recreate some of the dishes I've tasted here in Kyoto. It was a sensory overload, with the aroma of fresh pastries and the sight of neatly arranged produce creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Kyoto. The temples, gardens, and culinary delights had nourished my soul and reminded me of the importance of finding peace and connection in our busy lives. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure along the Philosopher's Path and visits to Nanzen-ji and Eikan-do Temples, I carry with me the lessons of today, the whispers of gold and stone that will continue to resonate long after I leave this enchanting city. I am looking forward to the breakfast at MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar.

I’m also looking forward to tomorrow's dinner at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO|Restaurant, after a long day of exploring. I also plan to visit Bar K6 for a relaxing evening.

Tonight, as I write this, I feel a profound sense of contentment. Traveling with Friends has made this experience even more special, sharing laughter, stories, and moments of quiet contemplation. As an Afghan woman living in Germany, I often find myself straddling two worlds, two cultures. But in Kyoto, I feel a sense of belonging, a connection to something ancient and timeless. It is a reminder that despite our differences, we are all connected, all seeking beauty, peace, and meaning in our lives.

Tomorrow, I hope to find more beauty and peace while walking the Philosopher's Path.
