A Fond Farewell

As my journey in the Moulay Idriss Region draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past nine days. This final day was a culmination of all the wonders I've encountered, a perfect blend of history, culture, and the simple joys of Moroccan life. I’m already anticipating sharing these memories with Hans and Leila, knowing they would have loved wandering these ancient streets with me.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق. The morning air was crisp, and the cafe buzzed with locals starting their day. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast of bread, olives, and mint tea, watching as the town slowly came to life. It was a peaceful moment, a perfect way to prepare for the day's explorations.

After breakfast, I decided to revisit Lahdim Square. Yesterday, it was bustling with activity, but this morning, it was serene and quiet. The square, also known as El Hedim Square, is a historical landmark in the heart of Meknès, and today, it offered a different perspective. I strolled around, admiring the stunning architecture that frames the square, remnants of the city's imperial past. It was a moment of quiet contemplation, appreciating the rich history that permeates every corner of this region.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing them fully, connecting with the culture, and finding pieces of yourself in the unfamiliar.

Next on my list was Place Moulay Hassan. While some sources suggest this vibrant square is in Essaouira, I was determined to find its equivalent here in the Moulay Idriss Region. I asked a local for directions, and he guided me to a smaller, equally charming square where locals gathered. Although not as grand as the one in Essaouira, this square was the heart of the community. Children played, old men chatted over coffee, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a perfect spot to soak in the local culture and observe daily life.

For lunch, I ventured to Volubilis. Though technically a restaurant, it shares its name with the ancient Roman city, which I visited earlier in my trip. The restaurant was a delightful surprise, offering a menu filled with traditional Moroccan dishes. I opted for a tagine, slow-cooked and bursting with flavor. As I ate, I thought about the Roman ruins nearby, imagining the lives of those who once walked those ancient streets. It was a fitting way to connect the past with the present.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in some shopping at زيارة باب مولاي إدريس. This shop offered a variety of local crafts and antiques, each with its own story to tell. I purchased a small, intricately carved wooden box, a memento of my time here. As I wandered through the store, I appreciated the craftsmanship and the history behind each piece. It was a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of this region.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to SCORPION HOUSE for dinner. The climb up the narrow medina streets was challenging, but the views made it worthwhile. Scorpion House is perched high above Moulay Idriss, offering panoramic views of the town and the surrounding countryside. The setting was magical, with the sun setting behind the ruins of Volubilis in the distance. I enjoyed a delicious Moroccan meal, savoring the flavors and the ambiance. The owner, Mike Richardson, was a gracious host, sharing stories of his life in Morocco and his passion for the local culture.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my time in Moulay Idriss. I had come here seeking cultural immersion, and I had found it in abundance. From exploring historical sites to participating in local traditions, I had experienced the heart and soul of Morocco. The warmth and hospitality of the people had touched my heart, and I knew that I would carry these memories with me forever.

The challenges of traveling solo, like remembering sunscreen and a portable charger, were minor compared to the profound experiences I gained. I’ve learned so much about Moroccan culture, the importance of community, and the beauty of simplicity. I’m eager to share these insights with my colleagues at the community center in Potsdam, hoping to inspire more intercultural understanding and appreciation.

Tomorrow, I leave Moulay Idriss, but a part of me will always remain here, wandering through the ancient streets, sipping mint tea in the cafes, and connecting with the warm and welcoming people. This journey has been a gift, a reminder of the importance of cultural exchange and the power of human connection.

As I prepare to return to Germany, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had and the lessons I've learned. Moulay Idriss has left an indelible mark on my soul, and I know that I will carry its spirit with me wherever I go. I am already looking forward to the day when I can return and explore even more of this beautiful and fascinating country. Until then, I will cherish the memories and continue to share the stories of Moulay Idriss with the world.

This trip has reinforced my belief in the power of travel to broaden our perspectives, deepen our understanding, and connect us with the global community. I am excited to bring these experiences back to my work as a cultural event coordinator, creating events that celebrate diversity and promote intercultural dialogue. Perhaps I can even organize a Moroccan-themed event, sharing the flavors, music, and traditions of this amazing country with my community in Potsdam.

And who knows, maybe one day I’ll convince Hans and Leila to join me on a return trip. I can already imagine Leila’s excitement as she explores the ancient ruins of Volubilis and Hans’s delight as he sips mint tea in a local cafe. Until then, I will continue to dream of Morocco and the magical experiences it has offered me.

“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” This quote perfectly encapsulates my feelings as I conclude this chapter of my journey. The world is vast and full of wonders, and I am grateful for the opportunity to explore it, learn from it, and share its stories with others. Thank you, Moulay Idriss, for the memories, the lessons, and the inspiration. Goodbye, for now, but not forever. I will carry your spirit with me always.

As I pack my bags and prepare for my departure, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. I set out on this solo journey with the intention of immersing myself in Moroccan culture, and I believe I have achieved that goal. I have explored historical sites, participated in local traditions, and connected with the warm and welcoming people of Moulay Idriss. This trip has been a transformative experience, one that has broadened my perspectives and deepened my understanding of the world. I am grateful for the opportunity to have embarked on this adventure, and I know that the memories and lessons I have gained will stay with me for a lifetime.
