A Day of Serenity in Pelion

Today was a day of wandering through the heart of Pelion, a day where the soul found rest and the spirit connected with the simple beauty of Greek village life. It's amazing how a change of scenery and a slower pace can bring so much clarity and joy. After spending the last few days exploring the coastal areas, I wanted to delve deeper into the mountainous interior and discover the hidden gems that Pelion has to offer.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at To Kima • Seaside Family Restaurant. The morning air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of the sea, even though I was a bit inland. I savored a traditional Greek breakfast of fresh yogurt, honey, and walnuts, while watching the local fishermen prepare for their day's work. It was a peaceful start, fueling me for the adventures ahead. The warmth of the staff made me feel like I was part of their family, a feeling I've come to cherish during my travels.

From there, I set off to explore the Sycamore of peace square. The square was quiet and serene, a perfect spot for reflection. The ancient sycamore tree stood tall and proud, its branches offering a welcoming shade. I sat there for a while, simply observing the rhythm of the village life, feeling a sense of calm wash over me. It reminded me of the importance of finding moments of peace amidst the chaos of everyday life. There are several yoga and creative retreats in Pelion. Perhaps I should sign up for one.

Next on my list was a visit to Manolas. The village is perched high on the mountainside, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The narrow, winding streets were a delight to explore, each turn revealing a new and charming detail. I stumbled upon a small, family-run taverna where I had lunch. The owner, a kind old woman with a warm smile, served me a plate of homemade moussaka that was simply divine. We chatted for a while, and she shared stories of her life in the village, her words painting a vivid picture of the rich cultural heritage of Pelion. Manolas is the main settlement and the capital of Therasia, with cubic houses, white walls and narrow streets.

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.

For lunch, I enjoyed a meal at Me Mostra. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the authentic Pelion cuisine. I ordered a selection of traditional dishes, each bursting with flavor and made with fresh, local ingredients. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, and I found myself chatting with fellow diners, sharing stories and laughter. It was a reminder of how food can bring people together, creating connections that transcend cultural boundaries.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Archontiko Traditional Restaurant for dinner. Located in Portaria, this restaurant extends out onto an open courtyard with views of lush mountain greenery. The restaurant was nestled in a charming corner of the village, its warm and inviting ambiance beckoning me inside. I savored a delicious meal of grilled lamb and roasted vegetables, accompanied by a glass of local wine. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I decided to check out Grooove, a local bar. The bar was small and cozy, with a lively atmosphere. I enjoyed a glass of tsipouro, a traditional Greek spirit, while listening to live music. It was a fun and festive way to end the day, immersing myself in the local culture and connecting with the community.

Today was a reminder that the most memorable travel experiences often come from the simplest of moments: a shared meal, a friendly conversation, a quiet moment of reflection. Pelion has a way of slowing you down, of inviting you to savor the present moment and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. And as I reflect on my journey so far, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this enchanting region and connect with its people and culture. I am reminded of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting intercultural understanding, values that resonate deeply with me.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Pelion Ski Centre and take a ride on The Little Train of Pelion. I am excited to see more of what this beautiful region has to offer, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences with you all.

I am also reminded of my family back in Potsdam. I miss Hans and Leila dearly, and I find myself wishing they could be here to share these experiences with me. I know they would love the warmth and hospitality of the Greek people, and the stunning beauty of the Pelion landscape. Perhaps one day, we can return together and create new memories as a family. Until then, I will continue to explore and discover, carrying them in my heart and sharing my adventures with them through my stories and photos.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with anticipation and excitement. Pelion has captured my heart, and I know that the memories I am creating here will stay with me long after I have returned home. It is a place of peace, beauty, and connection, a place where the soul can find rest and the spirit can soar. And I am grateful for every moment I have spent here, every experience I have had, and every person I have met. Pelion is more than just a destination; it is a journey into the heart of what it means to be human.

The International Pelion Festival will host a series of masterclasses and concerts in Eastern Pelion in the summer of 2025. October in Pelion offers a variety of events and festivals.

I am also reminded of the importance of staying healthy while traveling. It's Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. I must remember to schedule a check-up when I return to Germany.
