A Mountain of Memories

Today was a day of delightful contrasts here in Pelion. I embarked on a journey that took me from the heights of a ski center, promising winter adventures, to the historical depths of a charming railway. It was a day filled with beautiful scenery, delightful local encounters, and a deeper appreciation for the diverse beauty of this region. As I sit here, reflecting on the day's adventures, I can't help but smile at the thought of how much this solo journey has enriched my soul.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at KRITSA Restaurant in Portaria. The restaurant is located in the basement of the Kritsa Hotel. The high-ceilinged room was decorated with light colors and discrete decorations, and it had a welcoming fireplace. Though dining under the plane trees wasn't an option today, given the slight chill in the air, the warmth inside more than made up for it. I savored every bite, knowing I needed the energy for the day ahead. I opted for the 'wild greens with eye eggs,' a traditional Pelion dish that was recommended to me, and it was absolutely delicious. It reminded me of similar dishes back home, simple yet full of flavor, made with fresh, local ingredients. Fuelled and ready, I set off towards the Pelion Ski Centre.

The drive up to the Pelion Ski Centre was breathtaking. The winding roads offered panoramic views of the landscape, with glimpses of the Aegean Sea in the distance. Although it's October, and not quite ski season yet, I was eager to see the centre and imagine it blanketed in snow. I learned that the Pelion Ski Centre is the largest tourism and sport facility in Magnesia. The centre is located at Agriolefkes on Mount Pelion, at an altitude of 1,471 meters, and offers a unique view of the Aegean Sea and Pagasitikos Gulf. While the slopes were quiet, without the skiers and snowboarders, I could still feel the energy of the place. I imagined the thrill of gliding down those slopes, with the sea stretching out before me. I took a moment to breathe in the crisp mountain air, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience this serene beauty.

Sometimes, the most unexpected journeys lead to the most profound discoveries.

After soaking in the mountain views, it was time for lunch. I headed to SPECIAL DELIGHT restaurant & cocktail bar. Fortunately, it was only a short drive to Agios Ioannis. I decided to try the seafood, and it was incredibly fresh and tasty. The restaurant is located a few steps away from Agios Ioannis Beach. I enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and the sea views.

With a satisfied stomach and a heart full of mountain air and sea breeze, my next stop was The Little Train of Pelion, or as the locals call it, “Trenaki”. I drove to Ano Lechonia, where the train departs. The charming station was bustling with activity, families and tourists alike eager to experience this historical railway. As the train chugged along the narrow tracks, I was transported back in time. The train is known as 'Moutzouris,' which is a common Greek nickname for steam trains because of the black smoke they leave behind. The views were simply stunning – lush forests, olive groves, and the shimmering sea below. The railway route was a major factor in the further development of the villages of Pelion, built in two stages, between 1894 and 1903. The supervision of the construction of the railway network was carried out by Evaristo de Chirico, the father of the well-known painter Giorgio de Chirico, who was born in Volos. The 90-minute ride to Milies was a delightful journey through the heart of Pelion.

In Milies, I took some time to explore the village. I visited the church of Pammegistoi Taxiarches, which has significant history. I learned that Anthimos Gazis raised the flag of revolution against the Turkish Possession here on May 7th 1821. I also visited the Library of “Psychis Akos”, where the historical flag and unique manuscripts are kept.

Before heading back, I stopped by The Shop Of Nature in Makrinitsa. I wanted to find some local herbs and spices to take back home to Hans and Leila. The shop was a treasure trove of natural goods, from organic food to handmade crafts. I picked up some mountain tea and a few other spices, hoping to recreate some of the delicious flavors I’ve been enjoying here in Pelion.

For dinner, I decided to try O Christos in Agios Ioannis. It was recommended to me as an authentic Greek tavern with fresh seafood. I enjoyed fresh fish, grilled to perfection. The personal, family-like atmosphere made the experience even more special.

As I prepare for tomorrow, I am excited about visiting View point Portaria and Centaurs' path. I’ve heard that the views from Portaria are incredible, and I’m eager to hike along the Centaurs' path and learn more about the mythology of this region. I'm also planning to visit Filokaliashandmadecreations.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – the unexpected discoveries, the connections with local culture, and the opportunity to broaden my perspective. As an Afghan woman living in Germany, I find that travel allows me to connect with different parts of myself, embracing both my heritage and my present. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and look forward to what tomorrow brings. I am especially grateful for the chance to reflect on my experiences and grow as a person. I hope that my journey inspires others to embrace solo travel and discover the beauty of the world, and the beauty within themselves.

The warmth and hospitality of the Greek people, the stunning landscapes, and the rich history have all left an indelible mark on my soul. I am excited to continue exploring this beautiful region and sharing my experiences with you all. This journey is not just a vacation; it's a pilgrimage of self-discovery and a celebration of the human spirit.
