Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of historical echoes and serene natural beauty that only Pelion could offer. As I continue my solo exploration of this captivating region, I found myself transported through time aboard a vintage train, followed by moments of quiet reflection at a mountaintop vista. It’s days like these that remind me why I embarked on this journey in the first place—to connect with the heart of a culture and find peace in its landscapes.

My morning began with a delightful breakfast at Souarè Anelion Pelion. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air, a comforting start to the day. Fuelled and ready, I made my way to Ano Lekhonia, eager to experience the legendary Train of Pilio. This narrow-gauge railway, lovingly known as the “Moutzouris” (smoky one), promised a scenic journey through the mountains, and it did not disappoint.

As the little train chugged along, I was swept away by the stunning views of the Pagasetic Gulf and the lush Pelion landscape. The journey from Ano Lehonia to Milies was more than just a ride; it was an immersion into the history and natural beauty of Pelion. The train meandered through olive groves, past stone bridges, and along steep cliffs, each turn revealing a new and breathtaking vista. I found myself reflecting on my own journey, the path that led me from Bamyan to Potsdam, and now to this enchanting corner of Greece. The resilience of the Afghan people, the warmth of my German community, and the universal human desire for connection—all these thoughts swirled within me as the train made its way through the mountains.

Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

Upon arriving in Milies, I took some time to explore the charming village. The traditional architecture, the quaint shops, and the friendly locals created an atmosphere of warmth and authenticity. I purchased some local honey and herbs, eager to bring a taste of Pelion back home to Hans and Leila. After a leisurely stroll, it was time for lunch. Synantisi, a local taverna, offered a delightful array of traditional Greek dishes. I savoured the flavours of fresh seafood and local vegetables, a true taste of the Mediterranean.

With a full stomach and a happy heart, I set off to my next destination: the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through narrow mountain roads with hairpin turns and stunning panoramic views. As I ascended, the air grew cooler and the landscape more dramatic. When I finally reached the observation point, I was rewarded with a vista that stretched as far as the eye could see.

The view from the Pelion Cross of Jesus was simply breathtaking. From this vantage point, the entire region unfolded before me, a tapestry of mountains, forests, and coastline. I spent a long time simply gazing at the view, allowing the serenity of the landscape to wash over me. It was a moment of profound peace, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, I made my way to the Mountain Top Cafe for a well-deserved drink. Perched high on the mountainside, this cozy cafe offered stunning views and a relaxed atmosphere. I sipped a glass of local wine, savouring the last rays of sunlight and reflecting on the day’s adventures. The warm hospitality of the staff made the experience even more enjoyable, a reminder of the importance of community and connection.

As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of today. Pelion has a way of weaving its magic, of connecting you to its history, its nature, and its people. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Limnionas Beach and the Spring Of Manas, eager to discover more of Pelion’s hidden gems. I am also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at the Mediterraneo Art Store. But for now, I will rest and dream of the adventures that await, carrying the echoes of the past and the visions of today in my heart.
