Day 1: Kyoto's Cultural Embrace: A Day of Castles, Manga, and Culinary Delights
Explore Kyoto's rich history at Nijo Castle, dive into manga culture, and savor exquisite Japanese cuisine on a captivating solo journey.
Kyoto's Opening Act
Ah, Kyoto! My first day in this enchanting city was nothing short of a dream. From the moment I stepped off the train, I was enveloped in an atmosphere of serene beauty and timeless tradition. Today was all about immersing myself in the heart of Kyoto, exploring its historical landmarks, artistic expressions, and, of course, indulging in its world-renowned cuisine. This solo adventure began with a hearty breakfast, a majestic castle, a museum dedicated entirely to manga, and ended with a culinary experience that will forever be etched in my memory.
My day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Kizahashi, nestled within The Thousand Kyoto hotel. The restaurant's ambiance, with its blend of modern design and traditional Japanese elements, was the perfect start to my Kyoto adventure. Surrounded by a beautiful Japanese garden, I felt a sense of calm and anticipation for the day ahead. I opted for a set menu that included grilled fish, miso soup, and an array of small, flavorful dishes. It was a delightful introduction to the delicate and nuanced flavors of Japanese cuisine.

With a satisfied stomach and a spring in my step, I made my way to Nijō Castle. The former residence of the Tokugawa shogunate, Nijō Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site that offers a glimpse into Japan's feudal past. The castle grounds are expansive, featuring stunning gardens, intricate architecture, and the opulent Ninomaru Palace. As I wandered through the palace, I couldn't help but marvel at the grandeur of the building and the exquisite details of the artwork. The 'nightingale floors,' designed to chirp when someone walks on them, were a fascinating security feature, adding an element of intrigue to the experience. I learned that Nijō Castle is hosting the “NAKED meets Nijo Castle 2025 Sakura” event, which started on March 14th and will run until April 13th. It transforms the castle into a magical night-time sakura world with digital art, so I made a mental note to perhaps return in the evening.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not only in its temples and gardens but also in its ability to seamlessly blend tradition with modernity.
Next on my itinerary was the Kyoto International Manga Museum, a place I had been eagerly anticipating visiting. As someone who enjoys graphic novels, I was excited to explore the world of Japanese manga. Housed in a former elementary school, the museum boasts a vast collection of manga, with shelves upon shelves filled with titles from various genres and eras. I spent hours browsing through the collection, discovering new artists and revisiting old favorites. The museum also features exhibits on the history of manga, as well as workshops and events for aspiring artists. I even saw a schedule for March with different Manga Studio artists, which was fascinating. It was interesting to see how the museum preserved and celebrated this unique art form.

After immersing myself in the world of manga, my stomach began to rumble, signaling it was time for lunch. I chose to dine at Hafuu, a restaurant renowned for its exquisite meat dishes. Luckily, I was able to make a reservation. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, with a mix of traditional and contemporary design elements. I opted for their specialty, the Wagyu beef steak, and it was an experience that transcended mere sustenance. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was a true culinary masterpiece, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef.

Before dinner, I couldn't resist a quick detour to Kyoto Station's ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store. As a fan of Kyoto Animation's works, I had to see what treasures I could find. The store was a treasure trove of merchandise from various KyoAni series, including *Haruhi Suzumiya*, *K-ON!*, and *Violet Evergarden*. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a *Violet Evergarden* keychain and a *Sound! Euphonium* postcard, as mementos of my visit.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Kikunoi Roan, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its refined Japanese cuisine. This restaurant is run by Yoshiharu Murata, the younger brother of Kikunoi chef Yoshihiro Murata. The restaurant's setting was intimate and elegant, with a serene atmosphere that enhanced the dining experience. I opted for the kaiseki menu, a multi-course meal that showcases the season's freshest ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a harmonious blend of sweet, savory, and umami. The service was impeccable, with the staff attentive and knowledgeable, guiding me through each course and explaining the ingredients and techniques used.

As I savored the last bite of my meal at Kikunoi Roan, I reflected on the incredible day I had experienced in Kyoto. From the historical grandeur of Nijō Castle to the artistic vibrancy of the Manga Museum and the culinary delights of Hafuu and Kikunoi Roan, Kyoto had captivated my senses and touched my soul. It was a day of cultural immersion, artistic appreciation, and gastronomic indulgence, a perfect introduction to the wonders of this remarkable city.
Tomorrow, I plan to venture to Arashiyama to explore the famed bamboo forest and the serene Tenryu-ji Temple. I've heard whispers of the enchanting L'Escamoteur bar and plan to visit it tomorrow evening. I'm also looking forward to breakfast at Yasakadori Enraku and lunch at Arash's Kitchen.
As I return to my hotel, the Tomoya Residence Hotel Kyoto Nijo Takakura, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Kyoto. It's a journey that I will cherish forever, a testament to the transformative power of travel.
