A Solo Cultural Exploration in Kyoto
Day 10: Kyoto's Farewell Embrace: Temples, Traditions, and Twilight Musings
Reflecting on my Kyoto journey with visits to Kodaiji, Gion Corner, and Kenninji, savoring a final taste of Japan's cultural heart.
A Fond Farewell to Kyoto
As my final day in Kyoto drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the incredible journey I've had. From the serene temples to the bustling streets, every moment has been a treasure. Today was no exception, filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights that truly captured the essence of this beautiful city. It's amazing how much one can experience, even when traveling solo, and I'm excited to share the highlights of my last day with you all.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya. Though I'd heard they were no longer prioritizing vegetarian options, I decided to give it a try. It was a cozy little spot, and I managed to find a delightful grilled tofu dish. Energized, I set off to explore the temples and traditions that Kyoto is so famous for.
First on my list was Kodaiji Temple. Founded in 1606 by Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it stands as a serene tribute to Japan's rich cultural tapestry. Walking through the bamboo grove, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The temple's artistry is wonderful, and the unique style leaves a lasting impression. I was particularly captivated by the gardens, designed by Enshu Kobori, and the teahouses, which were conceived by Sen-no-Rikyu. I spent a good couple of hours wandering around, soaking in the atmosphere.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where history whispers and nature sings.
Next, I headed to Gion Corner, eager to experience some of Kyoto's traditional performing arts. Located in the Gion district, it's the perfect place for those who want to experience traditional Japanese culture in an hour. I saw a display of seven of Kyoto's traditional performing arts, including a tea ceremony, Kyomai dance performed by Maiko, and a Bunraku puppet show. The tea ceremony was particularly fascinating, and I appreciated learning about the principles of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility that it embodies. The Maiko Gallery also caught my attention, displaying images of annual events in the Kyoto Gokagai and collections of hair decorations worn by maiko dancers.

For lunch, I ventured to Hyoto Shijo Karasuma, where I indulged in their dashi shabu lunch featuring branded pork. The meal began with a sakura-scented sesame tofu, followed by soft and steamed yuba with tortoiseshell sauce. The main course was the dashi shabu-shabu, featuring tender branded pork and an assortment of seasonal vegetables, which I enjoyed with plenty of chopped green onions and yuzu pepper. The meal concluded with fresh udon noodles and a warm matcha tea. It was a truly memorable culinary experience, perfectly capturing the essence of Kyoto's flavors.

After lunch, I made my way to Kenninji Temple, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple. Founded in 1202 by Eisai, the monk who introduced Zen Buddhism and tea cultivation to Japan, Kenninji is a place of profound historical and cultural significance. I wandered through the temple grounds, admiring the large halls and gates, and the meticulously maintained rock and moss gardens. The Dharma Hall's ceiling painting of twin dragons, commissioned in 2002 to commemorate the temple's 800th anniversary, was particularly striking. It was a peaceful setting away from the bustle of downtown Kyoto.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a farewell dinner at Chihana. This Michelin-starred restaurant offered a culinary experience that was nothing short of extraordinary. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing the chef's meticulous attention to detail and the exquisite flavors of Kyoto's seasonal ingredients. From the appetizers to the main courses, every bite was a delight, leaving me with a lasting impression of Japan's culinary excellence. I savored grilled Spanish mackerel with soy vinegar and mild green chili pepper, followed by grilled eggplant with sesame soy vinegar. The meal concluded with a refreshing glass of apple and orange juice.

To cap off my final night, I sought out the Turquoise Bar, a cozy spot known for its extensive cocktail menu. The bartenders were incredibly skilled, crafting unique and flavorful drinks that perfectly matched my preferences. The bar's inviting atmosphere and stylish decor made it the perfect place to unwind and reflect on my journey. I enjoyed a custom-made cocktail, expertly prepared with a blend of local ingredients, as I reminisced about the incredible experiences I've had in Kyoto.

As I sit here now, penning these final thoughts, I can't help but feel a pang of sadness that my time in Kyoto is coming to an end. But I also feel an immense sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced this incredible city. From the serene temples to the bustling streets, every moment has been a treasure. Kyoto has captured my heart, and I know that I will carry its beauty and wisdom with me always. I already feel a longing to return, to once again immerse myself in its rich culture and traditions.

This solo adventure has been a transformative experience, allowing me to connect with myself and the world in ways I never thought possible. Until next time, Kyoto, farewell.
As I prepare to leave this enchanting city, I find myself pondering the words of the Japanese poet Basho:
Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.
These words resonate deeply with me, reminding me that the experiences we gather along the way shape who we are and enrich our lives in profound ways. Kyoto has been more than just a destination; it has been a home away from home, a place where I have discovered new facets of myself and gained a deeper understanding of the world. And so, with a grateful heart and a renewed sense of purpose, I bid farewell to Kyoto, knowing that its spirit will forever remain with me.
As I pack my bags and prepare for my journey back to Bonn, I carry with me the essence of Kyoto – its tranquility, its artistry, and its unwavering respect for tradition. This solo exploration has been a gift, a chance to reconnect with my roots, embrace new experiences, and discover the beauty that lies within and around me. And though I may be leaving Kyoto, I know that its lessons and memories will continue to inspire me on my path forward.
