Day 11: A Day of Heights and Hidden Gems in Chefchaouen

A Bird's-Eye View and Ancient Echoes
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the natural beauty of Chefchaouen with its rich history and vibrant culture. I started with a panoramic viewpoint and ended up lost in the enchanting alleys of the medina, discovering hidden gems at every turn. It was a day that deepened my appreciation for this blue-washed city and its captivating charm.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Triana. Sofia was particularly excited, having read about their Italian and Mediterranean options. Klaus opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, eager to savor the local flavors. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of Msemen, a traditional Moroccan pancake, drizzled with honey and accompanied by a strong, sweet mint tea. It was the perfect fuel for the day’s adventures.
Fueled up and ready to explore, our first stop was Hero Eagle. The walk there was invigorating, with the clear August air filling my lungs. As we ascended, the city unfolded beneath us, revealing a mesmerizing tapestry of blue hues stretching across the Rif Mountains. Sofia was thrilled, snapping photos at every turn. The viewpoint itself was more than just a scenic spot; it was a perfect place to appreciate the unique architecture and serene atmosphere of Chefchaouen. I could see why it's so popular during sunrise and sunset, the soft light enhancing the blue of Chefchaouen, creating a magical ambiance.

Sometimes, the best views come after the hardest climbs.
After soaking in the breathtaking views from Hero Eagle, we made our way to the Kasbah. This historical monument, built in the 15th century, stands as a testament to Chefchaouen’s rich past. As we stepped through its ancient gates, I felt transported back in time, imagining the fortress as it once was, a stronghold against Spanish and Portuguese incursions. The Kasbah has served many purposes over the centuries, from a residence for governors to a military arsenal and even a prison.

We explored the Ethnographic Museum within the Kasbah, inaugurated in 1985, which offered a fascinating glimpse into Moroccan heritage. Sofia was particularly intrigued by the collection of musical instruments, while Klaus was drawn to the historical weapons. The museum showcased a variety of cultural and artistic objects, including traditional dresses, pottery, and Berber and Andalusian motifs. Climbing to the top of the Kasbah, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains. The terraces provided an exceptional vantage point, allowing us to fully appreciate the unique blend of Andalusian and Moroccan architecture that defines Chefchaouen.
For lunch, we decided to try Amigo, a local restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and reasonable prices. The small terrace overlooked Bab Souk, offering a wonderful view of traditional Chaouen life. Klaus and I both ordered the tagine with sardines, a local specialty that came highly recommended. Sofia, still craving something familiar, opted for the chicken beldi with homemade fries. The food was simple, yet delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The owner, Amigo, was incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.

After lunch, we wandered through the medina, eventually finding ourselves drawn to a Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop. The shop was a dazzling display of handcrafted copper items, from intricately designed lamps to exquisite decorative pieces. I was captivated by the artistry and craftsmanship that went into each piece. Sofia, always interested in unique souvenirs, carefully selected a small copper lamp to take back to Bonn. I found myself drawn to a beautiful mosaic table, imagining it in our garden back home.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Terrasse Djebli for dinner. The restaurant, located near the Kasbah, offered stunning views of the Rif Mountains. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the soft lighting that enhanced the magical ambiance. I ordered the tagine, while Klaus tried the grilled meats, marinated to perfection and served with flavorful dips and breads. Sofia enjoyed a simple pasta dish, happy to have a taste of home. The attentive staff made sure we had everything we needed, adding to the overall experience.

I couldn't help but think of my own heritage as I savored the Moroccan flavors. Growing up in Azrou, I was surrounded by the rich culinary traditions of our culture. Moving to Germany meant adapting to new tastes and ways of life, but I always held onto the flavors of home. Sharing these experiences with Klaus and Sofia, especially in a place as beautiful and culturally rich as Chefchaouen, fills me with immense joy.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore El Mellah and Feddan Park. I’m particularly interested in seeing El Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, and learning more about its history. Sofia is excited about Feddan Park, hoping to find a playground where she can run around and burn off some energy. And of course, we’ll be sure to stop by Café Mundial for a relaxing evening.
As I reflect on today, I am reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences and immersing oneself in different cultures. Chefchaouen has a way of captivating your senses and leaving you with a deep appreciation for the beauty and diversity of our world. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, and I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you all.
