Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Ioannina's natural landscapes. I ventured out to explore the famed Papingo Rock Pools and the mystical Drakolimni, eager to immerse myself in the region's stunning vistas and crystal-clear waters. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and invigorating experiences, a true feast for the senses.

The morning began with a delightful breakfast at MATILDE pasta bar. Despite some reviews mentioning potential traffic fumes, I found a cozy spot and enjoyed a lovely meal to fuel up for the day’s adventures. It’s funny, isn’t it? How the little things, like a simple breakfast, can set the tone for an entire day. It reminded me of mornings back in Azrou, where the aroma of freshly baked bread filled our home, a tradition I miss dearly.

After breakfast, I set off towards Papingo, a picturesque village nestled in the heart of Zagori. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. As I approached Papingo, the landscape transformed into a verdant paradise, with lush greenery stretching as far as the eye could see. I could not help but think of Klaus and Sofia, and how much they would have enjoyed this drive. Maybe next time, I will convince them to join me on one of my adventures!

The first stop was the Papingo Rock Pools, also known as “Kolymbithres” by the locals. These natural rock formations are a series of waterfalls and cavities carved into the limestone rocks by the Rogovo stream over centuries. The water was crystal clear and refreshingly cold, perfect for a rejuvenating dip. I spent a couple of hours exploring the pools, marveling at the unique rock formations and the serene beauty of the surroundings. It was like stepping into a hidden oasis, a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. I even took a moment to close my eyes and listen to the gentle sound of the water cascading down the rocks, a symphony of nature that soothed my soul.

After soaking in the tranquility of the rock pools, I decided to have lunch at The Log restaurant. This steakhouse had been highly recommended, and I was eager to try it out. The Log certainly lived up to its reputation. The food was exquisite, and the service was impeccable. I indulged in a perfectly cooked steak, savoring every bite as I reflected on the day’s adventures. The restaurant's ambiance was also quite charming, with a cozy and elegant setting that made me feel right at home.

With renewed energy, I embarked on the next leg of my journey: Drakolimni, the Dragon Lake. The hike to Drakolimni was challenging but incredibly rewarding. The trail wound its way through rugged terrain, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As I ascended, the landscape transformed from lush forests to rocky alpine terrain, a testament to the region's diverse natural beauty.

The legend of Drakolimni says that dragons used to live on Mount Tymfi and Mount Smolikas, constantly at war, throwing rocks and pine trees at each other. Their battles created the ridges and valleys of the region. It’s a whimsical tale, adding a layer of mystique to this already enchanting place. It reminded me of the stories my grandmother used to tell me in Azrou, filled with mythical creatures and magical landscapes.

Finally, after a strenuous but fulfilling hike, I reached Drakolimni. The lake was breathtaking, a shimmering expanse of water surrounded by towering peaks. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the gentle sound of the wind. I spent some time simply sitting by the lake, soaking in the panoramic views and feeling a profound sense of peace. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape, I started my descent. The hike down was just as challenging as the ascent, but the stunning views kept me motivated. By the time I reached the base of the mountain, I was exhausted but exhilarated, my heart filled with gratitude for the day’s experiences.

For dinner, I decided to try Good restaurant, which had also received rave reviews. However, I found out that the restaurant I intended to visit was fully booked. Instead, I opted for a delightful meal at The Log again, where the exceptional service and delicious food made for a perfect end to the day. I savored each bite, reminiscing about the day’s adventures and feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore such a beautiful part of the world.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Beatnik, a local bar known for its vibrant atmosphere and eclectic music. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. The bar was lively, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the music and the convivial atmosphere. I ordered a drink and settled in, feeling a sense of camaraderie with my fellow travelers. It was a fitting end to a day filled with exploration and discovery, a celebration of the beauty and wonder of Ioannina.

As I walked back to my hotel, the night sky was ablaze with stars, a celestial display that mirrored the beauty of the day’s experiences. I couldn’t help but smile, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore such a remarkable place. Ioannina had captured my heart, and I knew that I would carry its beauty with me long after I had left.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Katsari Park and the Lake Pamvotis Ecosystem Interpretation Park, eager to discover more of Ioannina’s hidden gems. I might also visit District Concept Store to find some unique souvenirs. I am also looking forward to trying Kamara Tsipouradiko for breakfast, Miam Miam Το Μακαρονάδικο for lunch and elân for dinner. I’m excited to see what new adventures await!

This trip has been a wonderful reminder of the importance of solo travel, allowing me to connect with myself and the world around me in a way that I never thought possible. It’s a journey of self-discovery, a chance to break free from the routine of daily life and embrace the unknown. And as I drift off to sleep, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty and wonder, a gift that I will cherish forever.
