A Dance with Ice and Water
Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Huascaran National Park. Leaving behind the familiar comfort of Toronto feels like a distant memory as I immerse myself deeper into the heart of Peru. The crisp mountain air, the towering peaks, and the promise of glacial wonders made me eager to start the day. I was excited to explore with my friends, knowing that shared experiences amplify the joy of discovery. Today, we set out to witness the majestic Glaciar Pastoruri and the enchanting Catarata de Cunca, two jewels in Huascaran's crown.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Andino in Huaraz. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of a traditional Peruvian breakfast filled the air. It’s amazing how a good meal can set the tone for the adventures that lie ahead. I savored every bite, knowing we needed the energy for the day’s explorations.

Journey to Glaciar Pastoruri
The drive to Glaciar Pastoruri was an adventure in itself. As we ascended into the mountains, the landscape transformed dramatically. The lush greenery of the lower valleys gave way to stark, rugged terrain, and the air grew noticeably colder. It reminded me of the stark beauty of Lebanon's mountains, yet distinctly Andean. The road, though a bit rough in places, offered panoramic views that were simply breathtaking. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of the Andes.
We made a brief stop to see the Puya Raimondii plants, the world's largest bromeliads. These giant, spiky plants are truly bizarre and impressive, standing tall against the harsh landscape. It’s incredible to think that any plant could thrive at such high altitudes. My friends and I took the obligatory photos, marveling at nature's resilience.
As we approached the glacier, the effects of climate change became starkly apparent. Pastoruri, once a massive river of ice, has been receding rapidly in recent years. It's a sobering reminder of the impact we have on our planet. Despite its diminished size, the glacier was still a sight to behold. The surrounding peaks, dusted with snow, created a dramatic backdrop, and the glacial lake reflected the sky in a stunning display of blues and whites.
The hike to the glacier was relatively short, but the altitude made it challenging. At over 5,000 meters (17,225 feet) above sea level, even the simplest tasks felt like a workout. We took our time, pacing ourselves and taking in the views. Some of our group opted to rent horses for part of the way, a testament to the altitude's impact. Reaching the glacier was a moment of triumph. Standing there, surrounded by such immense natural beauty, I felt a profound sense of peace and connection to the earth.
The earth has music for those who listen.
Chasing Waterfalls: Catarata de Cunca
After our glacial encounter, we descended back into the valley and set off in search of Catarata de Cunca. The change in scenery was refreshing. From the icy heights of Pastoruri, we found ourselves amidst a landscape of vibrant greenery and the soothing sound of rushing water.

The hike to Catarata de Cunca was a delightful contrast to the starkness of the glacier. The trail wound through lush vegetation, and the air was filled with the songs of birds. The anticipation grew with each step, the sound of the waterfall becoming louder and more insistent. Finally, we emerged into a clearing, and there it was – Catarata de Cunca, a cascade of pristine water tumbling down a rocky cliff.
The waterfall was mesmerizing. The water plunged into a pool below, creating a refreshing mist that kissed our faces. We spent some time simply admiring the scene, taking in the beauty and serenity of the surroundings. Some of us even braved the icy water for a quick dip, a truly invigorating experience! I felt grateful for the chance to witness such natural splendor, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Toronto.
Culinary Delights and Evening Reflections
