Day 8: Chasing Heights and Flavors: A Day of Andean Wonders
Experience the thrill of the world's highest tunnel, the majesty of Huandoy, and the flavors of Huaraz in one unforgettable day.
A Day Amongst Giants
Today was a day of incredible contrasts, soaring heights, and delicious discoveries. From venturing through the world's highest tunnel to gazing upon the majestic Huandoy peak and savoring the local flavors of Huaraz, every moment was a feast for the senses. I felt so alive, breathing in the crisp mountain air and sharing laughter with my friends. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to push my boundaries, and immerse myself in the beauty of our planet.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Andino in Huaraz. The aroma of freshly brewed Peruvian coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of Andean pastries. I opted for a traditional breakfast set, which included a warm, crusty roll, local cheese, and a strong cup of coffee to fuel our adventures. Jihad went for the vegan tofu salad, while the others enjoyed various egg dishes. The cafe itself was charming, with rustic wooden furniture and large windows offering a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. It was the perfect start to what promised to be an epic day.
Fueled and ready, we hopped on a bus headed towards the Túnel Punta Olímpica. The drive itself was an experience, winding through narrow mountain roads with breathtaking views at every turn. The landscape transformed from lush green valleys to rugged, rocky terrain as we ascended higher and higher. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and anticipation as we approached the tunnel, knowing that we were about to pass through the highest vehicular tunnel in the world.
Emerging from the other side of the Túnel Punta Olímpica was like entering another world. The air was noticeably thinner and crisper, and the landscape was even more dramatic. We stopped to take photos, marveling at the sheer engineering feat of the tunnel and the stunning beauty of the surrounding peaks. The tunnel, at 4,735 meters (15,535 feet) above sea level, connects the Callejón de Huaylas with Conchucos. I couldn't help but think of Lina and how much she would have loved this. I made a mental note to bring her here someday, to share this incredible experience with my daughter.

From the tunnel, we continued our journey towards Huandoy. As we approached, the mountain loomed large, its four peaks piercing the sky like jagged teeth. The local legend says that Huandoy was a beautiful princess, daughter of the Sun God Inti, who fell in love with a mortal named Huascarán. The Sun God, angered by their love, turned them into two mountains, forever separated by the Llanganuco Valley. Looking at the majestic peaks, I could almost feel the weight of their eternal love and separation.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views come after the most challenging climbs.
We spent a good part of the afternoon simply admiring Huandoy, taking photos, and soaking in the serene beauty of the Andes. The crisp mountain air filled my lungs, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the power and beauty of nature.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way back to Huaraz for a well-deserved lunch at Don Cuy. This restaurant is known for its traditional Peruvian dishes, and I was eager to try some local specialties. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. The aroma of grilled meats and savory sauces wafted through the air, making my stomach rumble with anticipation.

I decided to try the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian stir-fry with beef, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes, while Jihad opted for a vegetarian tamales. The lomo saltado was absolutely delicious, the beef tender and flavorful, the vegetables perfectly cooked, and the sauce rich and savory. It was the perfect comfort food after a long day of exploring. Jihad enjoyed his tamales as well, praising the freshness of the ingredients and the authentic flavors. We ate heartily, savoring every bite and chatting about our adventures of the day.
After lunch, we strolled through the streets of Huaraz, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the town. We stumbled upon Hecho con Amor, a charming little shop filled with handmade crafts and souvenirs. I couldn’t resist buying a few small gifts for Lina, a colorful alpaca doll and a hand-painted wooden flute. I love finding unique, locally made items to bring back home, little reminders of our travels and the people we meet along the way.

For dinner, we decided to try Trivio Resto Bar, a popular spot known for its craft beers and innovative cuisine. The restaurant had a trendy, bohemian vibe, with colorful murals on the walls and live music playing in the background. We started with a round of local craft beers, each with its own unique flavor and aroma. For dinner, I ordered the lomo en crema champiñones, a tenderloin steak in a creamy mushroom sauce, while Jihad opted for the vegetarian option, a quinoa salad with roasted vegetables. My steak was cooked to perfection, the mushroom sauce rich and decadent, and the vegetables fresh and flavorful. Jihad raved about his quinoa salad, praising the creativity of the dish and the quality of the ingredients. The portions were generous, and we left feeling satisfied and content.

I am so grateful for these moments, for the opportunity to explore new places, and for the friends who make these adventures even more special.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Cordillera Blanca, hopefully, the weather will be good, and visit the Sitio Arqueológico TUMSHUKAYKO. I'm excited to see what new wonders await us. Until then, good night from Huaraz!
