Adventuring Through Huascaran National Park with Friends
Day 9: A Day of Ancient Echoes and Breathtaking Vistas in Huascaran National Park
Exploring the historical depths of Tumshukayko and the majestic heights of Cordillera Blanca with friends in Peru.
Whispers of the Past, Peaks of the Present
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time and altitude that left me breathless in more ways than one. From exploring ancient ruins to gazing upon snow-capped peaks, Huascaran National Park continued to deliver unforgettable experiences. The blend of history and natural beauty here is simply mesmerizing, and I'm so grateful to be sharing it all with my friends.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bosque Del Prado. I opted for one of their yogurt bowls with fresh fruit and granola. Fueled up, we set off to explore the Sitio Arqueológico Tumshukayko. This pre-Inca site, located near Caraz, is believed to have been an important ceremonial center. As we approached, the structures emerged from the landscape, a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of ancient civilizations.

Wandering through the ruins, I couldn't help but feel a connection to the past. The site dates back thousands of years, with evidence of occupation from around 2000 BCE. Antonio Raimondi, an Italian explorer, described it as a partially destroyed hill with huge stone walls in 1873. Later, in 1919, Dr. Julio C. Tello confirmed this description, noting the platforms and terraces.
The stonework was impressive, even in its weathered state. Platforms, terraces, and stairways formed a circular structure, a testament to the advanced cultures that once thrived here. I imagined the rituals and ceremonies that might have taken place within these walls, the lives of the people who once called this place home.
To truly appreciate the present, one must understand and respect the past.
The site wasn't crowded, allowing for a more intimate connection with history. My friends and I spent a couple of hours exploring, taking photos, and marveling at the panoramic views of the surrounding Andes. It's incredible to think that this site is considered one of the oldest civilizations in America. The stone heads and triangular stones found here suggest a connection to the early Chavín culture.
After immersing ourselves in history, it was time to embrace the natural beauty of the Cordillera Blanca. We drove towards the mountains, the towering peaks growing larger with each passing mile. The Cordillera Blanca is part of Huascaran National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that attracts adventurers from around the globe.

December in the Cordillera Blanca generally has mild temperatures, but with moderate to heavy rainfall. Luckily, today was relatively clear, with sunny mornings and some afternoon clouds. The views were simply breathtaking. Snow-capped peaks pierced the sky, their white summits contrasting against the deep blue. We stopped at several viewpoints, each offering a unique perspective on the majestic landscape.
We found a charming spot for lunch at Jose Olaya. It's a traditional place known for its local foods. The restaurant is known for showcasing local ingredients and recipes that reflect the culinary heritage of the region. I savored traditional Peruvian cuisine, enjoying a hearty stew that warmed me from the inside out. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect complement to the stunning scenery.

The weather in Huaraz in December can be unpredictable. Daytime temperatures can reach around 12°C, but nighttime temperatures can drop to 2°C. The rainy season is from October to March, so we were prepared for potential showers.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit Huaraz Zipline Adventures and Parque Turístico Entre Cordilleras. I'm excited to experience the thrill of ziplining through the mountains and exploring more of the park's natural beauty. We might also stop by REGALIA, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs.
As I write this, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Huascaran National Park has exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Traveling with my friends has made this adventure even more special, creating memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. I'm also grateful that I remembered to pack my hiking boots, warm clothing, camera, and sunscreen. However, I do regret forgetting my portable charger and travel guidebook. I need to remember these for future trips.
Tomorrow is our last full day in Huascaran National Park, and I'm determined to make the most of it. I can't wait to see what adventures await us as we continue to explore this incredible corner of the world. I'm so happy that Jihad and Lina are doing well back in Toronto, and I can't wait to see them again soon.
Until tomorrow,
Fatima
