Springs and Serenity: A Day of Rhodian Refreshment
Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and historical charm of Rhodes. Leaving behind the bustling city center, my friends and I ventured out to explore two unique locations: Kallithea Springs and Seven Springs. Each offered a distinct experience, a blend of relaxation, history, and a touch of adventure. It was a day of serene escapes and delightful discoveries, a perfect pause in our otherwise active itinerary.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Greek Restaurant AGALMA. This family-owned restaurant, a short distance from the coast, welcomed us with open arms and the aroma of authentic Greek cuisine. Since moving to Canada, I've missed the simple, fresh flavors of Lebanese and Greek cooking, and this breakfast was a delightful reminder of home. After fueling up, we set off for our first destination: Kallithea Springs.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where history whispers and nature soothes.
Kallithea Springs: A Step Back in Time
Kallithea Springs is located on the northeastern coast of Rhodes. As we approached, the blend of natural beauty and architectural elegance was immediately striking. The springs have a rich history, dating back to ancient times when their therapeutic properties were renowned. The reddish waters were believed to be under the protection of the god Poseidon, and Hippocrates himself explored their hydrotherapeutic potential.
In the early 20th century, during the Italian occupation, the springs were transformed into a modern spa complex. The architect Pietro Lombardi designed the buildings in the Art Deco style, harmonizing them beautifully with the natural environment. The complex officially opened in July 1929, coinciding with the completion of the new road connecting Rhodes City and Lindos. Wandering through the restored Rotonda Hall, pebble-stone mosaics, and lush gardens, I felt transported to another era. The architecture was impressive, and the setting was incredibly peaceful.
The springs themselves are no longer actively used for their therapeutic properties, but the site is a monument to history, and a beautiful place to relax. We spent a couple of hours exploring the grounds, taking photos, and enjoying the views of the crystal-clear Aegean Sea. The small coves and rocky shoreline invited us for a refreshing swim, and we couldn't resist taking a dip in the cool, inviting waters. It was the perfect way to start our day, soaking in the history and natural beauty of Rhodes.
Seven Springs: An Oasis of Nature
After Kallithea Springs, we drove to our next destination: Seven Springs, also known as Epta Piges. Located about 30 kilometers south of Rhodes City, this natural oasis is nestled in a deep woodland. The landscape was strikingly different from the coastal scenery of Kallithea, with lush greenery, flowing waters, and an abundance of wildlife.

As the name suggests, Seven Springs is fed by seven different natural springs that converge to form a small lake. The springs flow year-round, creating a cool, magical environment, even in the heat. The area is a Natura-2000 protected zone, and as we walked along the forest paths, we encountered peacocks, tortoises, and geese. The air was fresh and filled with the sounds of nature, a welcome escape from the city.
One of the main attractions of Seven Springs is the tunnel that leads to the lake. Constructed in 1931 by the Italians, this narrow, dark tunnel is 186 meters long and only 2.5 meters high. The tunnel carries the water from the springs to the lake. Despite feeling a bit apprehensive, I decided to take the plunge and walk through it. The water was cold, and the darkness was disorienting, but it was an exhilarating experience. Emerging on the other side, I was greeted by the sight of the tranquil lake, surrounded by trees and wildlife.
Those who prefer not to walk through the tunnel can take a path through the forest to reach the lake. The lake itself is suitable for swimming, although the water is quite cold. We spent some time by the lake, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful scenery. Seven Springs is a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse oneself in nature.
Culinary Delights and Evening Relaxation
After our adventures at Kallithea Springs and Seven Springs, we were ready for a delicious lunch. We headed to Romeo Restaurant, known for its traditional Greek cuisine and charming ambiance. The restaurant is hidden away in a small alley in the Old Town, and as we walked through the bar area, we were surprised by how large it was. The outdoor seating area was surrounded by trees, creating a wonderful atmosphere.

For dinner, we chose Elia - Olive Restaurant, enticed by its reputation for authentic Greek and Mediterranean dishes. We started with a selection of traditional mezes, followed by fresh seafood and grilled meats. The flavors were incredible, and the portions were generous. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the staff were welcoming and attentive.
