Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Present

Today, I immersed myself in the historical and artistic heart of Rhodes, a journey that resonated deeply with my love for culture and heritage. From ancient artifacts to contemporary Greek art, and of course, a taste of the local cuisine, it was a day filled with discoveries that I can't wait to share.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Andrea's Restaurant. The warm morning air was filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee, a perfect start to fuel our explorations. I opted for the moussaka, a classic Greek dish I always enjoy, while some of my friends chose the lamb, all agreeing it was a great choice to start the day.

With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes. Housed in the medieval building that once served as the Hospital of the Knights, the museum itself is a historical artifact. Stepping inside, I was immediately transported back in time. The museum's collection is a treasure trove of finds from ancient Ialyssos and Kamiros, showcasing the island's rich past. The marble statue of Aphrodite Bathing was particularly captivating, its exquisite detail a testament to the artistry of the Hellenistic period. Wandering through the halls, Jihad and I were struck by the sheer volume of history contained within those walls. It's amazing to see artifacts from so many different periods all in one place. I was particularly drawn to the ancient coins, imagining the hands that once exchanged them in the bustling markets of Rhodes.

Next on our itinerary was the Jewish Museum of Rhodes, a poignant reminder of the island's diverse cultural tapestry. Located adjacent to the Kahal Shalom Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Greece, the museum tells the story of the Jewish community that thrived on Rhodes for centuries. Established in 1997 by Aron Hasson, the museum displays historical documents, religious books, and artifacts donated by Rhodian Jews from around the world. Seeing the photographs and reading the personal stories of families who once called Rhodes home was incredibly moving, especially knowing their tragic end with the deportations to Auschwitz in 1944. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting tolerance.

After our visit to the museums, it was time for lunch. We decided on Kali Strata Restaurant, known for its elegant dining experience and traditional Greek dishes. The restaurant is located near the famous Kali Strata steps in Chorio. The Green Salad with citrus vinaigrette was refreshing, and the Feta Tempura with cherry tomato jam and black sesame was a delightful twist on a classic. We also tried the seafood linguine. Each dish was bursting with flavor and beautifully presented.

With our bellies full and our minds enriched, we ventured into the heart of Rhodes Town for some shopping. Idea Greek Art Stores, Zamantakis Bros, caught my eye with its display of unique handmade souvenirs. As someone who appreciates craftsmanship and artistry, I was immediately drawn to the store's collection of pottery, jewelry, and traditional crafts. Each piece seemed to tell a story, reflecting the island's culture and history. I picked up a few small items as gifts for Lina and Jihad, hoping they would appreciate the thoughtfulness behind each piece.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to at Thomas for dinner, a restaurant recommended by a local friend. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets, this charming spot offered a tranquil setting and a menu of authentic Greek cuisine. The prawns and swordfish were cooked to perfection, and the Greek salad was a refreshing complement to the meal. The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere made it a perfect ending to a day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I feel a deep sense of connection to Rhodes and its people. The island's history, art, and culture have left an indelible mark on my soul, reminding me of the importance of preserving our heritage and celebrating our diversity. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Rhodes Windmills and Mandraki Marina & Port, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Alter Ego Summer bar. I can't wait to see what other treasures this enchanting island holds.

Until tomorrow,
Fatima

P.S. I almost forgot to mention, there seems to be an International Conference on Computational Methods in Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering happening here. It's quite interesting to see so many experts in one place, discussing such important topics.

Also, I am hoping to come across some Greek Easter events as Easter is one of the most important dates in the Greek calendar.
