Chugging Through History

Today was all about experiencing Pelion through a different lens – or rather, through the windows of a vintage train and from a mountaintop vista. It’s amazing how much richer a place becomes when you delve into its history and soak in its panoramic views. Jihad, Lina and I were excited to explore.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at To Katofli tis Ketis. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our adventures. The warm hospitality made us feel right at home, and Lina especially loved the homemade pastries. It’s these small, authentic experiences that truly make a trip memorable. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back in Toronto – a little taste of Greece to brighten our Canadian days.

After breakfast, we headed to Ano Lehonia to catch the Train of Pilio. This narrow-gauge railway, affectionately known as “Moutzouris” (the smudgy one), is a living piece of history. Built in the late 19th century, it once connected the villages of Mount Pelion with Volos, playing a vital role in the region's economic development. As we boarded the train, I couldn’t help but imagine what it must have been like to travel this route over a century ago.

The journey itself was nothing short of magical. The train chugged along at a leisurely pace, allowing us to fully absorb the stunning scenery. Lush vegetation, including plane trees, olive groves, and pines, carpeted the slopes, while glimpses of the Pagasitikos Gulf sparkled in the distance. Lina was captivated, her nose pressed against the window as she pointed out every goat and sheep we passed. The rhythmic sound of the rails and the occasional whistle of the locomotive added to the nostalgic charm.

Sometimes, the best way to see a place is to slow down and let its history unfold around you.

One of the highlights was crossing the steel bridge of Taxiarchis, also known as De Chirico's Bridge. It’s an architectural marvel, designed by Evaristo De Chirico, the father of the famous painter Giorgio De Chirico. The unique engineering, where the train curves while the bridge remains straight, is a testament to the ingenuity of the past. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe as we traversed this historic landmark.

Our destination was Milies, a charming village steeped in history. After disembarking, we strolled along the cobblestone path leading to the village center. We explored the Church of the Archangels, admired its architecture, and soaked in the tranquil atmosphere. The Folklore Museum and Library, one of the oldest in Greece, offered a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage. I picked up a few postcards, eager to share our experiences with family back home.

For lunch, we savored authentic Pelion cuisine at Meintani (Niki's Taverna). This family-run taverna is known for its traditional recipes and warm hospitality. Mrs. Niki, the owner, focuses on using fresh, local ingredients, and you can taste the difference in every bite. We enjoyed a variety of dishes, including perfectly cooked fish, kleftiko, and flavorful salads. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. With its cozy environment and wooden decor, it felt like stepping back in time. The view from the balcony, overlooking the Aegean Sea and Mount Pelion, was simply breathtaking.

After lunch, we drove to the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads and stunning vistas at every turn. As we ascended, the air grew cooler, and the scent of pine filled our senses. When we finally reached the observation point, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The rolling hills, the sparkling sea, and the quaint villages below created a picture-perfect scene. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to reflect on the beauty of nature and the simple joys of life.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we stopped by Mediterraneo Art Store in Ag. Kiriaki. This charming gift shop is a treasure trove of handmade crafts and local souvenirs. I was immediately drawn to the intricate ceramics and beautifully crafted textiles. It was the perfect place to find unique mementos of our trip. Lina chose a colorful bracelet, while Jihad picked out a hand-painted bowl. The store operates daily, making it convenient for visitors to stop by at their leisure.

For dinner, we decided to try Pelion Plaza Εστιατόριο - Πιτσαρία και Ενοικιαζόμενα Δωμάτια. After a day filled with Greek delicacies, we decided to order pizza. We sat on the balcony, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. The pizza was delicious, and the relaxed atmosphere was the perfect way to end our day. The restaurant also offers Greek cuisine, so we’ll be sure to try that another night.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. From the historic train ride to the mountaintop vista, every moment was filled with beauty and wonder. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to explore Saint Konstantinos Park and the Clock Tower [IfLastDayOfTrip, merge in “Trip end”]. But for now, I’ll close my eyes and drift off to sleep, dreaming of the rolling hills and sparkling seas of Pelion.
