Solo Adventure Through Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Day 9: Chasing Lighthouses and Waterfalls: A Day of Discovery in Ólafsvík
Exploring the charming town of Ólafsvík, discovering hidden waterfalls, rugged lava rocks, and the iconic Súgandisey Island Lighthouse.
Ólafsvík's Hidden Gems
Today was all about embracing the unexpected turns and hidden corners of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are the ones you don't plan, the little detours that lead to breathtaking discoveries. It’s about letting the landscape guide you, and today, Ólafsvík was my guide.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Arnarbær, a cozy restaurant that promised local flavors. I savored every bite, knowing I needed the energy for a day of exploration. The weather was crisp, a typical Icelandic autumn day, with a mix of sunshine and moody clouds dancing across the sky. After a quick check of the map, I set off, eager to uncover the treasures Ólafsvík had in store.
First on the agenda was the Súgandisey Island Lighthouse. The drive to Stykkishólmur was scenic, with the coastline offering glimpses of the vast ocean. Reaching the lighthouse required a short walk along a paved causeway, which was quite manageable. The wind was strong, a playful reminder of Iceland's raw power, but the views from the top were more than worth it. The harbor of Stykkishólmur sparkled below, dotted with colorful boats, and the Breiðafjörður fjord stretched out, an endless expanse of islands and sea. I spent a good hour there, just breathing in the fresh air and capturing the panoramic views with my camera. The lighthouse itself, a small, red structure, stood proudly against the horizon, a symbol of guidance and resilience. I imagined the countless sailors it had guided safely home over the years.

Back in Ólafsvík, I decided to explore the lava rock formations. These geological wonders are scattered along the coast, each telling a story of Iceland's fiery past. I parked the car and wandered along the shore, marveling at the jagged, black rocks sculpted by centuries of wind and waves. The formations were surreal, like abstract sculptures crafted by nature itself. I found myself climbing over some of the larger rocks, feeling like an explorer in a forgotten land. The contrast of the dark lava against the crashing white waves was mesmerizing, a constant reminder of the powerful forces that shaped this island.

The beauty of Iceland lies not just in its grand vistas, but in the intimate details that reveal themselves when you take the time to look closer.
Lunch was a delightful affair at Stapinn, a family-run restaurant in Arnarstapi. I opted for the fish and chips, a classic done exceptionally well. The fish was fresh and perfectly fried, the chips crispy and golden. It was the perfect comfort food after a morning of exploring. Chatting with the friendly staff, I learned about the history of the restaurant and the family's connection to the area. It’s these personal interactions that make traveling so enriching, the chance to connect with locals and hear their stories.

With renewed energy, I set my sights on Bæjarfoss, the waterfall nestled right behind the town of Ólafsvík. The walk to the waterfall was short and sweet, a gentle path leading from the church into a small gorge. As I approached, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and soon, Bæjarfoss came into view. It wasn't the most massive waterfall I've ever seen, but its charm lay in its accessibility and the serene setting. The water cascaded down the rocks, creating a cool mist that refreshed my face. I spent some time there, simply enjoying the tranquility and the beauty of this hidden gem. It felt like a secret escape, a place where I could connect with nature and find a moment of peace.

I decided to treat myself to a drink, reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar was lively, filled with locals and travelers alike, all sharing stories and laughter. I struck up a conversation with a couple from Germany, exchanging travel tips and experiences. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people from all walks of life.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure through the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and I plan to make the most of it. I’ll start with breakfast at Hotel Langaholt & Restaurant, before venturing out to explore the Norwegian House, Lóndrangar, and Rauðhóll (Snæfellsnes). I’m also hoping to squeeze in a visit to Bókaverzlun Breiðafjarðar - Kram Stykkishólmi for a bit of souvenir shopping. As I prepare to leave this magical place, I carry with me not just photographs and memories, but a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation for the beauty of our planet.
Back at my guesthouse, I journaled about the day, capturing the essence of each experience. It’s a ritual I’ve come to cherish, a way to preserve the memories and reflect on the lessons learned. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible peninsula, to witness its beauty, and to connect with its people. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula had exceeded all my expectations, and I knew I would carry a piece of it with me forever.
Tonight, as I prepare for my final day, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. This solo journey has been more than just a vacation; it's been a personal odyssey, a chance to reconnect with myself and the world around me. And as I look forward to returning home to Jihad and Lina, I know that I'll be bringing back not just souvenirs, but a wealth of experiences and insights that will enrich my life for years to come.
The warmth of my family awaits, and I can't wait to share my stories with them, to show them the photos, and to inspire them to embark on their own adventures. Until then, Iceland, takk fyrir! Thank you for the memories, the lessons, and the beauty. You've captured my heart, and I know I'll be back someday.
