Day 8: A Day of Serenity and Discovery on Snæfellsnes
Explore mineral springs, dramatic coastlines, and literary landmarks on Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula. A day of serene beauty and unique finds.
Chasing Literary Echoes and Mineral Waters
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a quiet interlude on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula that allowed me to soak in the unique atmosphere of this region. It was a day for simple pleasures, for breathing in the crisp Icelandic air, and for letting the landscape tell its stories.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Skurinn. Fuelled up, I set off to explore the natural wonders dotting the peninsula. The first stop was the Stone Bridge near Arnarstapi. The walk to the bridge was invigorating, the wind carrying the scent of the sea and the promise of dramatic views. The bridge itself is a stunning natural arch, a testament to the power of the elements shaping this coastline. I spent some time simply watching the waves crash against the rocks, feeling a sense of awe at the raw beauty of Iceland. It's amazing how a simple rock formation can make you feel so connected to the earth. The surrounding area is full of basalt columns and rugged cliffs. The walk offers amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Next on my itinerary was the Jules Verne monument. As a lover of literature and adventure, I was particularly excited about this stop. The monument, a simple signpost indicating distances to various cities, pays homage to Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth, which famously begins at the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Standing there, I couldn't help but imagine Professor Lidenbrock and his nephew embarking on their subterranean quest. It was a fun experience to connect a real place with a fictional story that has always sparked my imagination. I really felt like I was walking in the footsteps of literary giants, blending reality and fiction in a uniquely Icelandic way. The monument is located in Arnarstapi, a charming coastal village.

My afternoon was dedicated to a different kind of exploration – a quest for the unique mineral waters of Ölkelduvatn. The drive to the spring was scenic, passing through farmlands and lava fields, each turn revealing a new vista. The mineral spring itself was a humble affair, a simple pipe emerging from the ground, offering naturally carbonated water. I filled my water bottle, eager to taste this natural wonder. The water had a slightly metallic taste, a testament to its mineral-rich content. I made sure to leave a small donation as a thank you to the landowners who maintain the site. It's a small gesture, but it feels good to contribute to the preservation of these natural treasures. The name Ölkelda translates to holy ale well.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Miðhraun - Lava Resort. The resort is family-run and has a cozy atmosphere. The on-site restaurant served a delicious buffet, providing the perfect fuel for the rest of my day. As the day wound down, I treated myself to some coffee and souvenirs at Valeria Specialty Coffee & souvenirs in Grundarfjörður. The café is known for its Colombian coffee roasted on-site. They also sell handmade souvenirs. The owner is very friendly and knowledgeable about coffee. I picked up a few small gifts for Lina and Jihad, little reminders of our Icelandic adventure. Sipping my coffee, I enjoyed the view of Kirkjufell mountain, a perfect end to a perfect day.

For dinner, I decided to try Bjarnarhöfn Bistro. This family business is known for its shark curing traditions. The bistro offers local food with an amazing view. I sampled the shark fin soup, a local delicacy, and enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the bistro. Learning about the history of shark curing in Iceland was fascinating, and the meal provided a unique glimpse into the local culture.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am struck by the unique blend of serenity and discovery that the Snæfellsnes Peninsula offers. It's a place where you can connect with nature, immerse yourself in literature, and experience the warmth of Icelandic hospitality. This solo journey has allowed me to appreciate these moments on a deeper level, to savor the quiet beauty of the landscape, and to reflect on my own journey through life. Thinking about Lina and Jihad back home in Toronto, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience these wonders and eager to share my stories with them. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, which promises more exploration and adventure. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Súgandisey Island Lighthouse, explore the Lava Rocks Formations, and hike to Bæjarfoss [instruction]. I might even stop by Hverinn Restaurant & Bar for a drink [instruction]. Until then, I will cherish the memories of this day, letting the spirit of Snæfellsnes inspire me.
