A Day of Heights and Holy Hills

Today was all about embracing the unique geological and spiritual landscape of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. From climbing into a volcanic crater to seeking blessings on a sacred hill, it was a day filled with stunning views and quiet reflection. I was eager to immerse myself in the raw beauty of this region, and today certainly delivered.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hótel Snaefellsnes. Fuelling up with some traditional Icelandic fare was essential before tackling the day’s adventures. The hotel's cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made for a pleasant start, setting the tone for a day of exploration and discovery.

First on the agenda was Saxhóll Crater. As I drove towards the westernmost tip of the peninsula, the landscape transformed into a dramatic expanse of lava fields. The crisp October air added a touch of invigorating chill, a reminder of Iceland's wild nature. Arriving at Saxhóll, I was immediately struck by the sight of the metal staircase winding its way up the side of the crater. It looked like a pathway to another world. Climbing the 385 steps was surprisingly easy, and the panoramic views from the top were simply breathtaking.

Looking out, I could see the vast Atlantic Ocean stretching out to the horizon, and the rugged lava fields surrounding the crater. The Snæfellsjökull glacier loomed in the distance, a majestic presence that seemed to watch over the entire peninsula. I spent some time soaking in the scenery, taking photos, and simply enjoying the solitude. It was a perfect moment of connection with nature, a reminder of the powerful forces that have shaped this land over millennia. The crater itself was formed an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 years ago during a volcanic explosion. Knowing this made the experience even more profound, imagining the fiery event that created this geological wonder.

The earth has music for those who listen.

After descending from Saxhóll, my next stop was Lysuhóll. It was a relatively short drive, and the change of scenery was remarkable. Lysuhóll is known for its horse farm and geothermal algae bath. I decided to have lunch at Agnið streetfood. The street food was delicious, offering a taste of local flavors. It was a welcome break, and the friendly atmosphere of the place added to the experience. I savored every bite, knowing that the afternoon held more adventures.

While I didn’t have time for a horse riding tour or a soak in the algae bath today, I made a mental note to return. The rolling green hills and the sight of horses grazing peacefully created a sense of tranquility. I could easily see myself spending a relaxing afternoon here, connecting with nature and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. Plus, I've read that Lysuhóll is a convenient jump-off point for exploring other attractions in the area, like the Raudfeldsgja Gorge and the Londrangar basalt cliffs. Maybe next time I’ll plan a longer stay to fully appreciate everything Lysuhóll has to offer.

As the afternoon progressed, I made my way to Helgafell, the “holy mountain”. This small mountain has a rich history and is steeped in folklore. According to local tradition, anyone who climbs Helgafell for the first time can have three wishes granted. The catch? You have to walk straight up without looking back or speaking, and you must face east when making your wishes.

The climb was short but steep, and I focused on following the rules. It was a challenge not to glance back at the stunning views, but I was determined to make my wishes count. Reaching the top, I turned to face east and closed my eyes. I made my three wishes, keeping them secret as instructed. Whether or not they come true, the experience was special, a moment of quiet contemplation on a sacred site. I found a small remnant of a wall on the mountaintop, dating back to 1184, which was once part of a monastery. It added to the sense of history and spirituality of the place.

Before heading to dinner, I decided to stop by Hjá Góðu Fólki, a charming café and art house. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The café is known for using local produce from Snæfellsnes and herbs from nearby greenhouses. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and I enjoyed a cup of speciality coffee and a homemade pastry. I also browsed the local handicrafts on display, admiring the creativity and artistry of the region. It was a lovely way to end the day, surrounded by warmth and beauty.

For dinner, I chose Arnarbær, a restaurant known for its local cuisine. I wanted to savor one last taste of Icelandic flavors before calling it a night. The meal was delicious, and the service was excellent. I felt grateful for the experiences of the day, for the chance to witness the beauty of Snæfellsnes and to connect with its unique spirit.

As I reflect on today, I am struck by the diversity of experiences that Snæfellsnes offers. From the geological wonders of Saxhóll Crater to the spiritual significance of Helgafell, this peninsula is a place of contrasts and surprises. It’s a place where you can climb into the heart of a volcano, make wishes on a holy mountain, and enjoy the simple pleasures of good food and good company.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Eldborg Crater Trailhead and the Berserkjahraun lava fields. I'm also hoping to visit Selvallafoss, another of the peninsula's beautiful waterfalls. It sounds like another day filled with natural wonders and outdoor adventures. I am also planning to stop at FOK • Lífstíll & Gjafavara to do some local shopping.

I am so thankful that Jihad and Lina encouraged me to take this trip. I miss them terribly, but I know that this time alone is allowing me to recharge and reconnect with myself. As I continue my solo adventure, I am filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula has already captured my heart, and I can’t wait to see what other treasures it holds.
