Stepping Back in Time: My First Day in Taroudant

After a long journey from Delft, via a flight to Morocco and a bus ride with my friends, I finally arrived in Taroudant, a city often called 'Little Marrakech'. I was immediately struck by the city's authentic charm and the warmth of its people. I'm eager to explore and share my experiences with you all, focusing on the cultural richness and sustainable beauty of this hidden gem.

Our first day in Taroudant was nothing short of magical. The city welcomed us with open arms, and I couldn't wait to dive into its history and culture. I’m especially excited to share this experience with my friends; traveling together always brings a unique dynamic to our adventures.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café & Hotel Saha Taroudant. The traditional Moroccan pastries and mint tea were the perfect start to fuel our explorations. I made sure to try a bit of everything, savoring the sweet and savory flavors that are so characteristic of Moroccan cuisine. It reminded me of the delicious meals my mother used to make, blending familiar tastes with exciting new spices.

With our appetites satisfied, we set out to explore Bab Tarɣunt, one of the ancient gates that guard the city. The sheer scale of the gate was impressive, and I couldn't help but imagine all the people who had passed through it over the centuries. The ochre-colored walls glowed in the morning sun, creating a picturesque scene that transported us back in time. I paused for a moment, thinking about how different this was from Delft, yet how connected we all are through history and culture. The structure of the gate was impressive.

Next on our itinerary was the Musée Plein Air Claudio Bravo. This open-air museum is a true hidden gem, showcasing the works of the Chilean artist Claudio Bravo amidst the beautiful Moroccan landscape. Wandering through the gardens, we discovered sculptures and installations that blended seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Bravo's art resonated with me, his hyperrealistic style capturing the essence of Moroccan life and culture. I was particularly moved by his use of light and shadow, which seemed to mirror the play of sunlight on the city's ancient walls. It was a truly unique experience, and I felt grateful to have discovered this artistic haven.

After immersing ourselves in art, it was time for lunch. We stopped at Café-Restaurant Bab El Kasbah, where we enjoyed traditional Moroccan dishes while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. I ordered a tagine, a slow-cooked stew that is a staple of Moroccan cuisine. The rich, aromatic flavors were a delight, and I savored every bite. As we ate, we watched locals go about their daily lives, chatting and laughing. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people and experiencing their way of life.

In the afternoon, we ventured into the Grande marché de l'artisanat, a bustling marketplace where local artisans showcase their wares. The market was a sensory overload, with vibrant colors, exotic scents, and the sounds of bartering filling the air. I was immediately drawn to the intricate Berber carpets, the delicate silver jewelry, and the handcrafted leather goods. I haggled with the vendors, trying my best to get a good price while also respecting their craftsmanship. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven scarf as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of my time in Taroudant. The Grande marché de l'artisanat is a vibrant market.

Our final stop of the day was Dar al-Dabbagh, the local tannery. This was perhaps the most eye-opening experience of the day. The tannery is located just outside the city walls, near Bab Targhount. Here, we witnessed the traditional methods of leather production that have been passed down through generations. The process was both fascinating and pungent, with the air thick with the smell of dyes and animal hides. We watched as workers soaked the hides in vats of natural ingredients, transforming them into supple leather. It was a stark reminder of the hard work and dedication that goes into creating the products we often take for granted. The tannery is smaller than those in Fez or Marrakech.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Complexe El Kasbah for dinner. This restaurant offered a stunning view of the city walls, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. We enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled meats and vegetables, reflecting on the day's adventures. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this unique city and its rich culture. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.
