Westward Bound: Hippos and Habitats
Today was a journey into the heart of Ghana's Upper West Region, a day filled with the promise of encountering hippos in their natural habitat and exploring the lush landscapes of a protected forest. Leaving the familiar surroundings of Mole National Park, Jan, Amina and I ventured further west, eager to discover the hidden gems that this part of the country holds. It was a day of cultural immersion, wildlife spotting, and simply soaking in the raw beauty of Ghana's natural wonders.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Zaina Lodge [Itinerary Item: Breakfast at Zaina Lodge]. I savored some fresh tropical fruits and a strong cup of Ghanaian coffee, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. Amina was particularly excited, chattering about the possibility of seeing a real-life hippo. Jan, ever the pragmatist, made sure we had enough water and sunscreen for the day's explorations. I did a mental check, remembering the insect repellent this time – a lesson learned from our previous excursions!
The drive to the Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary was an experience in itself. The landscape gradually transformed as we journeyed further west, the familiar savannah giving way to a more lush and verdant terrain. We passed through small villages, each with its own unique character and charm. I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement building as we approached our destination.
Upon arriving at the Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary [Itinerary Item: Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary], we were greeted by a local guide who would accompany us on our river safari. He shared some fascinating insights into the history of the sanctuary and the local communities' efforts to protect the hippos and their habitat. It was truly inspiring to learn about their dedication to conservation and sustainable tourism.

As we boarded the traditional-style pirogue, a sense of anticipation filled the air. The Black Volta River, which forms the western boundary between Ghana and Burkina Faso, was calm and inviting. Our guide skillfully navigated the waters, pointing out various bird species and other wildlife along the way. The air was filled with the sounds of nature, a symphony of chirps, calls, and rustling leaves.
Then, the moment we had all been waiting for – a pod of hippos emerged from the water, their massive bodies glistening in the afternoon sun. Amina gasped with delight, pointing excitedly at the gentle giants. We watched in awe as they grazed peacefully along the riverbank, seemingly unperturbed by our presence. It was a truly unforgettable experience, witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural environment.
The earth has music for those who listen.
After our incredible hippo encounter, we made our way to the Ambalara Forest Reserve [Itinerary Item: Ambalara Forest Reserve], a protected area known for its diverse flora and fauna. The reserve is about 50km north of the Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary. As we entered the forest, we were immediately enveloped by a sense of tranquility and peace. The air was cool and fresh, and the sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, creating a magical atmosphere.

We embarked on a guided hike through the forest, our guide sharing his extensive knowledge of the local plant life and their medicinal properties. I was particularly fascinated by the traditional uses of various herbs and roots, a testament to the deep connection between the local communities and the natural world.
As we walked deeper into the forest, we spotted various wildlife species, including monkeys, colorful birds, and even a few shy antelopes. Amina was thrilled to see a troop of green monkeys , their playful antics bringing a smile to her face. It was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that Ghana has to offer, a treasure that must be protected for future generations.
After our enriching forest experience, it was time to head back to Accra. While a part of me wanted to linger longer in the peaceful embrace of nature, I knew that a delicious meal awaited us in the capital city.
Our dinner at Azmera Restaurant [Itinerary Item: Lunch at Azmera Restaurant] was a culinary delight. The restaurant is known for its authentic Ghanaian dishes and warm, welcoming atmosphere. We sampled a variety of local delicacies, including fufu with groundnut soup, jollof rice, and grilled tilapia. Amina particularly enjoyed the kelewele, fried plantains spiced with ginger and peppers. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

As the day drew to a close, Jan and I decided to unwind at Raphael's Pub [Itinerary Item: Raphael's Pub]. We sipped on some local beers, reflecting on the incredible experiences we had shared throughout the day. The vibrant atmosphere of the pub was a welcome contrast to the tranquility of the forest, a reminder of the diverse facets of Ghanaian life.

Today was a testament to the beauty and diversity of Ghana's natural and cultural heritage. From the gentle giants of the Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary to the lush landscapes of the Ambalara Forest Reserve, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery. It was a day that I will cherish forever, a reminder of the importance of conservation and sustainable tourism. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, where we plan to explore the Kintampo Waterfalls and Fuller Waterfalls [Itinerary Item: Itinerary of Tomorrow]. I have heard that they are a sight to behold, and I can't wait to share the experience with my family.
Before I turn in for the night, I must share a funny observation from today. While we were enjoying our meal at Azmera Restaurant, Amina, in her usual inquisitive manner, asked why the jollof rice tasted different from the one I make at home. I had to explain to her that every cook has their own unique recipe, and that's what makes each dish special. She then declared that she prefers my jollof rice, which, of course, made my heart swell with pride. It's moments like these that make traveling with family so incredibly rewarding.
The weather in Mole National Park in August is generally warm and wet, with temperatures ranging from 72°F to 86°F. Rainfall is common, so it's important to pack accordingly. Despite the rain, the climate is still tolerable, and the lush vegetation makes for a beautiful landscape.
Zaina Lodge, where we are staying, offers comfortable accommodations with air-conditioned rooms, private bathrooms, and free WiFi. The lodge also features a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, and a spa and wellness center. It's a great place to relax and unwind after a day of exploring the park.
Tomorrow, we will be venturing out to Bole Park and the Kintampo Waterfalls & Fuller Waterfalls. I'm particularly excited about visiting the waterfalls, as I have heard that they are a sight to behold. I'm also looking forward to doing some shopping at Ankaara [Itinerary Item: Itinerary of Tomorrow], a local shop known for its unique crafts and souvenirs. It's always a pleasure to support local artisans and bring home a piece of Ghanaian culture.
Until then, goodnight from Mole National Park!
