Finding Peace and Flavor in Damongo
Today was a beautiful blend of relaxation, exploration, and culinary delights. It’s amazing how a change of pace can bring a fresh perspective, especially when you're surrounded by the natural beauty of Ghana. From the tranquil views at Zaina Lodge to the vibrant flavors of Damongo, it was a day of simple pleasures and heartfelt moments.
Our day began, as most days have here, with the sun rising over the vast landscape viewed from Zaina Lodge. The morning light painted the savannah in hues of gold and amber, a sight that never gets old. Breakfast at the lodge was a delightful affair, with a spread of both Ghanaian and continental options. I particularly enjoyed the Zaina special rice; it was a flavorful start to the day. Amina was thrilled with the fresh fruits, while Jan appreciated the strong coffee, fueling us up for the day’s adventures.

After breakfast, we decided to venture into Damongo. Our first stop was Damongo Town Park. It's a lovely, serene space, perfect for a family stroll. The park offered a peaceful escape from the midday heat, with lush greenery and well-maintained paths. Amina loved running around on the spacious lawns, while Jan and I enjoyed a leisurely walk, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. It was heartwarming to see local families enjoying the park as well, a true community space.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand expeditions, but in the quiet moments of everyday life.
For lunch, we decided to try Mama Cuisine, a local restaurant known for its authentic Ghanaian dishes. The reviews I had read promised a culinary experience, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant had a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I opted for the jollof rice with grilled chicken, a classic Ghanaian dish that was bursting with flavor. Jan tried the banku and tilapia, while Amina, ever the adventurous one, surprised us by enjoying a taste of both. It was a truly immersive experience, connecting us with the local culture through its cuisine.

After our satisfying lunch, we spent some time exploring Damongo a bit more. It’s a laid-back town with a unique charm. We visited the local market, a vibrant hub of activity where vendors sold everything from fresh produce to handcrafted goods. The colors, smells, and sounds were a feast for the senses, and it was a great opportunity to interact with the friendly locals. I even picked up a few souvenirs, including a beautiful piece of woven cloth from the Daboya Weaving Village, a testament to the region’s rich artistic heritage.
As the day wound down, we decided to experience some of Damongo's nightlife. We stopped by Dayuori Bar for a relaxing evening. It was a cozy spot with a lively atmosphere. Jan and I enjoyed some local drinks while Amina sipped on a refreshing juice. The bar was a great place to unwind and soak in the local culture.

For dinner, we chose Jamrock Restaurant & Grill, drawn in by the promise of authentic Jamaican cuisine. It was a delightful change of pace, and the food was absolutely delicious. I had the oxtail and beans, while Jan went for the jerk chicken. Amina, of course, opted for the chicken patties. The restaurant had a vibrant, Caribbean vibe, and the music added to the festive atmosphere. It was a fun and flavorful end to our day.

Reflecting on the day, I realize how much I appreciate these moments of simple joy and connection. Exploring Damongo Town Park, savoring the flavors of Mama Cuisine and Jamrock, and unwinding at Dayuori Bar – each experience added a unique layer to our understanding of Ghana.
Tomorrow, we leave Mole National Park and head back to Accra, where we plan to visit the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum and Fort James. It will be a day of historical exploration, a fitting contrast to the natural beauty we’ve experienced here. I’m looking forward to delving into Ghana’s rich history and sharing those stories with you all. But for now, I’ll cherish the memories of today, a day of serenity and savory surprises in Damongo.
The simplicity of Damongo is quite charming. It reminds me of my childhood in Houndé, where life moved at a slower pace, and community was everything. These are the values I want to instill in Amina, a sense of appreciation for the simple things and a connection to the people and places around her. As we prepare to leave Mole National Park, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we've shared and the memories we've created. It’s been an unforgettable journey, one that has deepened our love for Ghana and its people. And as we continue our adventure, I’m excited to see what new discoveries await us.
I am also happy that I remembered to pack enough sunscreen, but I am still kicking myself for forgetting the portable phone charger! I mean, how am I supposed to take pictures without it? And I definitely should have packed a first aid kit. Lesson learned! I will make sure to have them for our next adventure.
Goodnight from Ghana!
