A Day of Discovery

Today was a beautiful blend of nature, history, and delightful culinary experiences along the Rota Vicentina. Waking up to the sounds of the Portuguese countryside, I knew it was going to be a day filled with exploration and family fun. With Jan, Amina, and myself ready for another day of exploration, we set out, eager to see what hidden gems this coastal paradise held.

Our first stop was breakfast at Papo Furado Portugal in Sines. It was a delightful start to the day, although finding a truly vegan option proved a little challenging. I ended up with a veggie burger sans the bun and cheese, which, while simple, was satisfying, especially with a generous side of salad. Amina enjoyed her pastry, and Jan had a hearty breakfast sandwich. The staff were very friendly, and the view was great. It wasn't the most nutritionally complete meal, but the friendly atmosphere and scenic location made up for it.

With our appetites sated, we drove towards Parque das Águas near Odemira. The park is a lush green space, filled with pine, ash, and willow trees, creating a serene environment perfect for a morning stroll. The park was once used for filtering and disinfecting water for nearby towns, adding a historical layer to its natural beauty. Amina was thrilled to explore the playground, while Jan and I enjoyed the tranquil walking paths. It was a refreshing escape, and we learned about the importance of water preservation.

Next on our itinerary was the Forte de Almádena, an ancient fort located between Salema and Burgau. Built in 1632, the fort once protected the local tuna fishing community from pirates and corsairs. Though now in ruins, the main entrance and parts of the bastions still stand, offering a glimpse into its storied past. As we explored the remains, I imagined the lives of the fishermen and soldiers who once manned this strategic outpost. The views of the coastline were breathtaking, and it was easy to see why this location was chosen for its defensive advantages. The fort was damaged in the 1755 earthquake and later abandoned. Walking through the remnants of the fort, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the past.

For lunch, we headed to Alma Nomada in Porto Covo, a restaurant known for its unique culinary experience. The ambiance was relaxed and inviting, with a boho-lux feel that made us instantly comfortable. The menu was a celebration of regional produce, blending traditional flavors with innovative twists. I opted for a seafood dish, while Jan enjoyed a meat option, and Amina had a specially prepared child-friendly meal. The food was exceptional, with each dish showcasing the chef's passion and artistry. It was a gastronomic highlight of our trip, and we savored every bite. Alma Nomada truly lives up to its name, offering a culinary journey that reinvents the region's gastronomic heritage.

In the late afternoon, we made our way back towards Zambujeira do Mar, stopping at Rocamar for a drink. This bar, located near the Cabo Sardão lighthouse, offered stunning views of the coastline. We sat outside, enjoying the sea breeze and the beautiful scenery. I had a glass of local wine, while Jan tried a Portuguese beer, and Amina enjoyed a refreshing juice. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. Rocamar is known for its good homemade food, and I made a mental note to return for a meal sometime.

Dinner was at A Ilha in Zambujeira do Mar, a restaurant recommended for its seafood. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were welcoming. We ordered a variety of seafood dishes, including grilled fish and seafood rice. The food was fresh and delicious, and we enjoyed the flavors of the sea. It was a fitting end to a day filled with coastal experiences.

As the sun began to set, we took a final stroll along the beach at Zambujeira do Mar. The sky was ablaze with color, and the sound of the waves was soothing. Amina collected seashells, while Jan and I watched the sunset. It was a perfect moment, encapsulating the beauty and tranquility of the Rota Vicentina.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our family adventure on the Rota Vicentina. We plan to visit the Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Marsh Natural Reserve, hoping to spot some unique bird species and learn about the local ecosystem. We’ll also make a stop at Pontal da Carrapateira for one last panoramic view of the Algarve coastline. Our culinary journey will continue with breakfast at Ao Largo Odeceixe, lunch at Torralta, and a farewell dinner at Manjedoura Restaurante Bar. Before heading back, we’ll indulge in some local flavors at Queijaria Caprino de Odemira, picking up some artisanal cheeses to bring a taste of Portugal back home to Delft. It’s bittersweet to think our adventure is coming to an end, but I’m filled with gratitude for the memories we’ve created and the experiences we’ve shared as a family.

This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a journey of discovery, connection, and appreciation for the natural and cultural wonders of Portugal. As we prepare to leave, I know that the memories of the Rota Vicentina will stay with us forever. The experiences we've had here have enriched our lives, and I'm excited to share these stories with you all.

The warmth of the Portuguese people, the stunning landscapes, and the delicious food have all combined to create an unforgettable experience. I am reminded of the importance of slowing down, connecting with nature, and cherishing the moments we have with our loved ones. As I reflect on our time here, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and a renewed appreciation for the simple joys of life. The Rota Vicentina has not only shown us the beauty of Portugal but has also deepened our bond as a family. As we prepare for our final day, I am excited to see what adventures await us, knowing that we will carry the spirit of this coastal paradise with us wherever we go.
