Family Adventure on the Rota Vicentina
Day 9: Discovering the Natural Wonders of Serra do Cercal and Monte Carvalhal da Rocha
Explore the breathtaking landscapes of Serra do Cercal and Monte Carvalhal da Rocha on Portugal's Rota Vicentina with family.
A Day of Heights and Horizons
Today was a day of embracing the heights and soaking in the vast horizons of the Rota Vicentina. The landscapes we encountered were nothing short of breathtaking, offering a unique perspective on this beautiful region of Portugal. It’s amazing how much a change in elevation can transform your view and your spirit.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Dong Jing in Cercal do Alentejo. Fuelled up with local pastries and strong coffee, we set off to explore the Serra do Cercal.

Discover the breathtaking beauty and diverse trails of Serra do Cercal, the ultimate hiking destination in Portugal for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
The drive itself was a treat, winding through rolling hills dotted with cork trees and vibrant wildflowers. As we gained altitude, the views started to open up, revealing the expansive Alentejo plains stretching towards the coast.
The Serra do Cercal offered several hiking trails, and we opted for one that seemed manageable with Amina. The trail meandered through a mosaic of small farms, vegetable gardens, and orchards, giving us a glimpse into the authentic rural life of the Alentejo people. It was heartwarming to see how harmoniously they coexist with nature, cultivating the land with respect and care.
As we ascended, the landscape transformed. The air became crisper, and the vegetation shifted to include more rugged, drought-resistant plants. From the higher vantage points, we could see the waterways originating in the Serra do Cercal, snaking their way towards the Campilhas dam and the Sado River. The panoramic views were simply stunning, offering a unique perspective of the region.
Sometimes, the best views come after the hardest climbs.
Reaching the summit, we were rewarded with an awe-inspiring vista. The entire coastline stretched out before us, the Atlantic Ocean shimmering in the distance. Amina was particularly excited, pointing out the various landmarks she could spot. It was a perfect moment of connection, sharing the beauty of nature with my family.
After soaking in the views and snapping countless photos, we made our way down, feeling invigorated and inspired. Our next stop was Monte Carvalhal da Rocha.

Monte Carvalhal da Rocha is located within the South West Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, offering a different but equally captivating experience. The landscape here is characterized by dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. We took a leisurely walk along the trails, marveling at the rugged beauty of the coastline. The scent of the sea filled the air, and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks was incredibly soothing.
Amina was thrilled to discover a small, secluded beach where she could paddle in the shallows. Jan and I took turns keeping a watchful eye while she explored the rock pools, discovering tiny crabs and colorful shells. It was a simple pleasure, but one that brought us all immense joy.
For lunch, we stopped at O Sacas, a charming restaurant in the area.
Discover O Sacas: A coastal culinary delight serving fresh seafood and local dishes in beautiful Zambujeira do Mar.
We savored fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese dishes, all while enjoying the stunning views of the coastline. The flavors were incredible, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming.
After lunch, we decided to visit a local shop called bio-loja.
Explore Bio-Loja in Odemira for a diverse range of organic products that celebrate local sustainability and promote a healthier lifestyle.
I was eager to explore the local products and perhaps find some unique souvenirs to take back home. The shop was a treasure trove of organic and locally sourced goods, from fresh produce to handmade crafts. I was particularly drawn to the selection of artisanal cheeses and cured meats, which I knew Jan would appreciate.
I also picked up some locally made honey and a jar of fig jam, both of which I plan to use in my Burkinabé cooking back in Delft. It’s always a joy to incorporate new flavors and ingredients into my culinary creations, and I’m excited to share these Portuguese delicacies with friends and family.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to the Mar Azul Restaurant & Bar for dinner.

We enjoyed a delicious meal while watching the sunset over the ocean. The sky was ablaze with color, painting a breathtaking canvas that stretched as far as the eye could see. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
Reflecting on our experiences today, I’m struck by the incredible diversity of the Rota Vicentina. From the rolling hills of Serra do Cercal to the rugged coastline of Monte Carvalhal da Rocha, this region offers a wealth of natural beauty and cultural richness. It’s a place where you can truly connect with nature, immerse yourself in local traditions, and create lasting memories with your loved ones.
I’m also reminded of the importance of sustainable travel. By supporting local businesses like bio-loja and choosing eco-friendly accommodations, we can help preserve the beauty and authenticity of this region for future generations. It’s a responsibility we all share, and one that I take seriously.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Parque das Águas and Forte de Almádena. I’m excited to discover what new adventures await us and to continue sharing our experiences with you. Until then, à bientôt!
The PinkFest 2025 is also taking place in Odemira, Alferce today, but I think that's more for the younger crowd. There is also the Madeira Flower Festival and other festivals around Portugal, but none in the area. Looking at the calendar of events in Odemira, there isn't much going on in terms of concerts or festivals.
Explore Portugal's stunning Rota Vicentina with family, embracing nature, culture, and sustainable travel through authentic experiences.
