A Solo Journey to the Tranquil Con Dao Islands
Day 4: A Day of Discovery: Exploring Con Dao's Hidden Gems
Immerse yourself in Con Dao's natural beauty with a visit to Hòn Bảy Cạnh and the secluded Dat Tham Beach. A day of tranquility and exploration.
Island Escapes and Hidden Beaches
Today was a day of venturing into the less trodden paths of Con Dao, a journey that took me through lush mangrove forests and led me to secluded beaches where the only sounds were those of nature. It’s these kinds of days, away from the familiar, that truly feed my soul and remind me why I embarked on this solo adventure in the first place.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at TYNA FOOD & COFFEE. It’s always a pleasure to start the day with a strong Vietnamese coffee and some local pastries, fueling up for the adventures ahead. The cafe was bustling with locals and a few tourists, all eager to start their day in this island paradise. I enjoyed watching the morning unfold before me, a slice of daily life here in Con Dao.
After breakfast, I set off for Hòn Bảy Cạnh, the second largest island in the Con Dao archipelago. To get there, I had to arrange for a boat through the Con Dao National Park visitor center. The boat ride itself was an experience, the sea air invigorating as we zipped across the waves. Hòn Bảy Cạnh is known for its diverse marine life and pristine beaches, making it a prime spot for snorkeling and diving. Unfortunately, I didn't have time for diving today, but I was eager to explore the island's other treasures. The island is a protected area, and it felt like stepping into a different world.
The earth has music for those who listen.
One of the highlights of Hòn Bảy Cạnh is its mangrove forest. I took a guided walk through the mangroves, learning about the unique ecosystem and the importance of these forests for coastal protection and biodiversity. It was fascinating to see the intricate root systems of the mangrove trees, providing habitat for a variety of marine creatures. I even spotted a few tank crabs scuttling among the roots. It’s amazing how much life thrives in such a seemingly inhospitable environment. The island is also a major turtle nesting site, though it wasn't the season for nesting while I was there. I learned about the conservation efforts to protect the turtle populations, which gave me a sense of hope and admiration for the dedication of the park rangers.

After exploring Hòn Bảy Cạnh, I made my way to Dat Tham Beach. Reaching this beach requires a bit of effort, as it involves a trek through the Con Dao National Park. I purchased a ticket at the park gate and parked my bike before embarking on the 3-kilometer trail. The walk was challenging but incredibly rewarding. The trail winds through the forest, with educational signage providing insights into the local flora and fauna. It’s a well-maintained path, but I was glad I had brought water and snacks, as it can get quite humid in the forest. I even encountered a small stream with drinkable water, which was a welcome surprise.
Emerging from the forest and arriving at Dat Tham Beach felt like discovering a hidden paradise. The beach is secluded and peaceful, with golden sands and clear waters. I spent a couple of hours simply relaxing on the beach, soaking in the tranquility and listening to the gentle lapping of the waves. I even tried to go for a swim, but as noted, entering the ocean can be a bit challenging due to the corals close to the shore. Still, the beauty of the beach and the surrounding nature made it all worthwhile. It’s easy to see why The Independent listed Dat Tham Beach as one of the top 10 pristine beaches in Southeast Asia. It truly feels untouched and unspoiled.

For lunch, I decided to try Nhà hàng Poulo Condore, drawn in by its reputation for combining international dishes with distinctive Vietnamese flavors. The restaurant is part of the Poulo Condor Boutique Resort & Spa, and the setting was simply stunning. I opted for a Vietnamese seafood dish, which was expertly prepared and bursting with fresh flavors. It was a delightful culinary experience, and the attentive service made it even more enjoyable. The open-air setting, with views of the Lotus Pond and Chua Mountain, added to the overall ambiance.

As the day drew to a close, I ventured out to On Cloud Nine Cocktail&Bar. This bar is known for its expertly crafted cocktails and cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. I enjoyed a couple of their signature cocktails, made with local ingredients, while chatting with the friendly bartenders. The bar has a calming decor and festive touches, making it a great spot for both locals and travelers. It’s a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away on a quiet street, but well worth seeking out.

For dinner, I chose ULA Restaurant & Bar Con Dao, enticed by its beach bar ambiance and delicious Vietnamese cuisine. I wasn’t disappointed. The grilled shrimp with exquisite marinades was a standout, as was the light and crunchy fried silken tofu. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the staff were incredibly friendly. It was a great way to end a day of exploration, savoring the flavors of Vietnam while enjoying the island’s laid-back vibe.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve into the history of Con Dao with visits to the Island Chief Palace and the Vietnam Heritage Tree. It’s important to remember and reflect on the past, especially in a place with such a rich and complex history. I am also hoping to visit Shop Thắng Hương to pick up some local souvenirs before I leave the island.
As I reflect on today, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and tranquility of Con Dao. It’s a place that nourishes the soul and reminds me of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. I am so glad I decided to come here on my solo journey. It's a reminder of the beauty and peace that can be found when we step off the beaten path and embrace the unknown. I am also happy that I remembered to pack my light, breathable clothing, swimwear, sunscreen, insect repellent, travel guidebook and my camera. I am however still missing my umbrella, portable phone charger and sunglasses. I will need to find a local shop tomorrow to replace those. I wonder if Moses would have remembered those things, he is always so prepared. I miss him and Hope, but this journey is something I needed to do on my own. It's a time for reflection and self-discovery, and I am so grateful for it.
