A Day of Natural Wonders
Today was a day of immersing myself in the raw, untamed beauty of Shikoku. From the dramatic depths of Ōboke Gorge to the serene heights of the Yoshinobu Rice Terraces, I found myself constantly in awe of nature's artistry. It was a day that reminded me of the simple joys of exploration and the profound connection we have with the land.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at Hattorikun. While I've grown up on Ugandan cuisine, I must admit that the Italian flavors were a delightful change. It was quite the surprise to find such a well-regarded Italian restaurant here in Shikoku, but it seems that Hattorikun is quite popular, earning high praise from locals and visitors alike. I savored every bite, knowing I needed the energy for the adventures that lay ahead.
First on the agenda was Ōboke Gorge. As the limited express train pulled into Oboke Station, I was immediately struck by the rugged landscape. The name 'Ōboke,' meaning 'big dangerous steps,' certainly seemed fitting. The steep, rocky walls of the gorge hinted at the powerful forces of nature that had carved this dramatic landscape over millennia.
I decided to take a sightseeing boat cruise down the Yoshino River. As we gently glided along the emerald waters, our guide pointed out the unusual geological strata and the fascinating rock formations that resembled various animals. The cool spray of the river was refreshing in the summer heat, and I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer scale of the gorge. The Yoshino River has cut through the Shikoku Mountains, eroding crystalline schist into winding gorges with myriad shapes and forms. I could easily see why this area is considered one of Japan's leading outdoor destinations.
Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
After the boat ride, I had lunch at Restaurant Obokekyo Mannaka. The restaurant uses a unique machine ticket system for ordering. You have to remember the number of your chosen menu item and press that number on the machine. It certainly made for a unique experience. The food was simple but satisfying, and the view of the gorge from the restaurant was absolutely stunning.

With my belly full and my spirit refreshed, I set off for the Yoshinobu Rice Terraces. The journey took me through winding mountain roads, each turn revealing even more breathtaking vistas. As I arrived at the terraces, I was immediately struck by the sheer artistry of the landscape. Tier upon tier of rice paddies cascaded down the hillsides, creating a mosaic of greens and golds that seemed to stretch on forever.

It's amazing to think that these terraces have been cultivated for centuries, a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of the local farmers. The terraces reflect the ingenuity and perseverance of past generations who molded the natural terrain to sustain their communities. I learned that the terraces are particularly beautiful in the autumn when the rice stalks turn a golden hue. Although it's still summer, I could imagine the breathtaking sight of the golden terraces blanketing the hillsides.
I spent hours wandering along the narrow pathways that crisscrossed the terraces, taking in the panoramic views and breathing in the fresh mountain air. It was a truly humbling experience, a reminder of the deep connection between people and the land. As I walked, I thought about my own connection to the land back in Uganda, and the importance of preserving our agricultural heritage. Mr. Maeda is making rice in this rice terrace and breeding Tosa-red cattle. To leave this landscape in the future, he throws his best every day.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Bar Salvador in Kochi for a nightcap. I remember frequenting similar spots back in Brampton with Moses. This stylish bar offered a relaxing ambiance, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. I sipped on a local craft beer, reflecting on the incredible experiences of the day. The bartender, a friendly local, shared stories about the area and recommended some hidden gems to explore tomorrow. It was a perfect way to end the day, connecting with the local community and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my Shikoku adventure. I plan to visit the Naruto Whirlpools and the Tokushima Prefectural Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, before heading back to Tokyo. I'm also hoping to pick up some last-minute souvenirs at the Shikoku Shop 88.
As I prepare to leave this beautiful island, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Shikoku has truly captured my heart, and I know I'll carry the memories of its stunning landscapes and warm hospitality with me always. From the depths of the Ōboke Gorge to the heights of the Yoshinobu Rice Terraces, this journey has been a testament to the beauty and resilience of nature and the enduring spirit of the human connection to the land. Until next time, Shikoku!
I think I will be heading back to Brampton with a renewed sense of appreciation for the simple things in life, and a deeper understanding of the importance of preserving our cultural and natural heritage. I can't wait to share my experiences with my family and friends, and to inspire them to embark on their own adventures, wherever they may lead.
I am sure I will also be sharing my experience with the Ugandan community in Brampton, encouraging them to explore new cultures and embrace the beauty of our world. After all, travel is not just about seeing new places, it's about opening our hearts and minds to new perspectives, and building bridges of understanding between different cultures. And who knows, maybe I can even convince Moses and Hope to join me on my next adventure!
