Chasing Naruto's Whirlpools
Today was nothing short of spectacular, a true immersion into the natural wonders and culinary delights of Shikoku Island. From the moment I woke up, I knew this day would be special, filled with the raw power of nature and the delicate flavors of Japanese cuisine. Leaving my guesthouse early, I set out to explore the famed Naruto Whirlpools, a sight I had eagerly anticipated since planning this solo adventure.

My first stop was Eki-mae Shokudo for breakfast, a small eatery close to the station. It was a delightful introduction to local flavors. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign, and the air was filled with the comforting aroma of traditional Japanese breakfast. I opted for a set meal that included grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was simple, yet incredibly satisfying, providing the perfect fuel for the day's adventures. It reminded me of the breakfasts Moses and I used to have back in Kyenjojo before a long day of work on the farm. Those simple meals always grounded us, just as this one did today.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed towards the Naruto Strait to witness the legendary whirlpools. The journey itself was an experience, as I navigated local buses and soaked in the scenic views of the countryside. The landscape was lush and green, a stark contrast to the urban sprawl of Tokyo, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me as I connected with the natural beauty of Shikoku.
Arriving at Naruto Park, I was immediately struck by the energy of the place. Tourists and locals alike were buzzing with excitement, all drawn by the allure of the whirlpools. I decided to start with the Tokushima Prefectural Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, a glass-floored corridor suspended beneath the Onaruto Bridge. Walking along the walkway, 45 meters above the churning waters, was an exhilarating experience.

The raw power of nature, combined with the ingenuity of human engineering, created a moment of awe that I will never forget.
Looking down through the glass panels, I could see the whirlpools forming and dissipating in a mesmerizing dance of water and currents. The sheer force of nature was humbling, and I stood there for a long time, simply watching the spectacle unfold. It reminded me of the powerful waterfalls back in Uganda, a testament to the earth's incredible energy. The walkway itself is an impressive feat of engineering, a testament to human ingenuity and our desire to witness and understand the natural world.
After the Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, I took a sightseeing boat tour to get a closer look at the whirlpools. Being on the water, surrounded by the swirling vortexes, was an entirely different experience. The boat rocked and rolled as we navigated the currents, and I could feel the power of the whirlpools beneath us. The guide explained the science behind the phenomenon, how the unique geography of the Naruto Strait, combined with the tidal movements between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean, creates these incredible formations.
The whirlpools themselves were a sight to behold, swirling masses of water that seemed to defy gravity. Some were small and fleeting, while others were large and powerful, creating a truly awe-inspiring display. I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder and respect for the forces of nature. It was a reminder of how small we are in the grand scheme of things, and how important it is to appreciate and protect our planet. The boat tour offered excellent views of the Onaruto Bridge and the surrounding coastal scenery, adding to the overall experience.
For lunch, I ventured to Tataki Kobo, a restaurant known for its local cuisine, particularly the katsuo no tataki (seared bonito). This dish is a Kochi specialty, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant had a cozy, traditional atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I ordered the katsuo no tataki set meal, which came with rice, miso soup, and various side dishes. When the katsuo no tataki arrived, I was immediately struck by its presentation. The bonito was perfectly seared, with a smoky aroma that filled the air. The fish was served with a variety of condiments, including garlic, ginger, and green onions, as well as ponzu sauce for dipping.

Taking my first bite, I was blown away by the flavor. The bonito was incredibly fresh and flavorful, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The searing process gave it a smoky char that complemented the fish perfectly, and the condiments added a burst of freshness and spice. The ponzu sauce provided a tangy counterpoint to the richness of the fish, creating a harmonious balance of flavors. It was unlike anything I had ever tasted, a true culinary masterpiece. It reminded me of the fresh fish we used to grill by the lake back home, but with a distinctly Japanese twist.
In the late afternoon, with the sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, I decided to explore the local nightlife. I ventured to Bar Kohno, a renowned establishment in Tokushima. The bar had a sophisticated, yet welcoming atmosphere, and the bartender was a true master of his craft. I decided to try one of their signature cocktails, a concoction made with local citrus fruits and herbs. The drink was expertly crafted, with a perfect balance of sweet, sour, and bitter flavors. It was a refreshing and invigorating way to end the day, and I savored every sip as I reflected on my adventures.

Bar Kohno is known for its selection of around 1,000 different whiskies, as well as popular cocktails made with local Tokushima citrus and fruits. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, offering recommendations and sharing stories about the local ingredients. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the region and its culinary traditions. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and I struck up conversations with other patrons, sharing travel stories and laughter. It was a reminder of the simple joys of human connection, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience such a warm and welcoming environment.
For dinner, I chose Munagin, a restaurant specializing in unagi (eel). I had heard rave reviews about their unagi dishes, and I was eager to try them. The restaurant had a traditional Japanese ambiance, with low tables and tatami mats. I ordered the unagi don, a bowl of rice topped with grilled eel. The eel was cooked to perfection, with a crispy skin and a tender, flavorful flesh. It was glazed with a sweet and savory sauce that complemented the eel perfectly, and the rice was fluffy and fragrant. It was a truly decadent meal, a fitting end to a day of indulgence.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, under the starlit sky, I couldn't help but smile. Today had been a perfect blend of natural beauty, culinary delights, and cultural immersion. I had witnessed the raw power of the Naruto whirlpools, savored the delicate flavors of local cuisine, and connected with the warmth and hospitality of the Japanese people. It was a day that I will cherish forever, a testament to the transformative power of travel. I am looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to explore Kochi Castle and the statues of the Three Tosa Samurai [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I think I will have breakfast at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop before heading out to explore. I must remember to charge my portable charger tonight!
Now, as I sit here writing, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. Gratitude for the experiences I have had today, and anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. Shikoku Island has truly captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
