Join us on our last day in Ishigaki as we explore observation decks, markets, and villages, savoring every last moment of island life.
Saying Goodbye to Ishigaki
As our family adventure on Ishigaki Island draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of contentment from the incredible experiences we've shared, tinged with a bit of sadness that our time here is ending. Today, we set out to embrace every last moment, determined to soak in the island's beauty and culture before heading back to Berlin. Astrid is already asking when we can return, a sure sign that this trip has made a lasting impression.
Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Tofu Higa. Knowing how popular this spot is, we arrived early, and it was a good thing we did! The yushi-dofu set was the perfect way to start the day – a comforting bowl of warm, silken tofu in a delicate broth. It came with rice, an omelet, and seasoned vegetables, offering a balanced and nourishing meal. Maximilian and I enjoyed the subtle flavors, and even Astrid, who can be a bit picky, enjoyed the omelet and rice. It’s amazing how such a simple dish can be so satisfying, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the care in its preparation.
With our bellies full, we drove to the Maesedake Observation Deck. The drive itself was lovely, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the coastline. The observation deck offered panoramic views of the island, and we could see the vibrant blue waters meeting the verdant hills. Astrid was fascinated by the landscape, pointing out boats and trying to spot familiar landmarks. I took a moment to capture the scene, wanting to preserve this memory of Ishigaki's natural beauty. It was a perfect reminder of why we chose this destination for our family trip.

Next on our itinerary was the Ishigaki City Public Market. This bustling market is a hub of local life, and we were eager to experience its vibrant atmosphere. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells. Vendors were calling out, showcasing their wares, from fresh seafood and tropical fruits to local crafts and souvenirs. We wandered through the aisles, marveling at the variety of products. Maximilian was drawn to the local spirits, while I was captivated by the colorful woven fabrics. Astrid, of course, was most interested in the sweets, and we ended up buying some sata andagi, Okinawan doughnuts, for a treat.

For lunch, we decided to try Yu Maodeng, known for its authentic Teppanyaki. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We ordered a selection of dishes, including fresh seafood and local vegetables, all cooked teppanyaki style right in front of us. The chef’s skillful performance added to the experience, and Astrid was mesmerized as he flipped and tossed the ingredients with precision. The food was delicious, each bite bursting with flavor. It was the perfect way to savor the local cuisine one last time.

In the afternoon, we visited Ishigaki Yaima Village, a charming recreation of a traditional Okinawan village. Nestled on a hill overlooking Nagura Bay, the village offered a glimpse into the island's past. We explored the well-preserved Yaeyama houses, some of which are designated as national tangible cultural properties. Astrid loved trying on traditional Ryukyu kimonos and painting her own shisha figurines. The highlight for her, though, was the squirrel monkey garden. These tiny, playful monkeys were incredibly cute, and Astrid was thrilled when they climbed on her. It was a heartwarming experience, and I was grateful for the opportunity to share it with my family.

Before dinner, I wanted to pick up a few last-minute souvenirs, so we stopped by Everyday Ishigaki EDISG. This local brand celebrates Ishigaki's unique beaches and art culture through its beachwear and lifestyle products. I found a beautiful scarf with a design inspired by the island's coral reefs, a perfect reminder of our snorkeling adventures. Maximilian picked up a T-shirt featuring a local surf spot, and Astrid chose a colorful bracelet with a sea turtle charm. It was a nice way to support local artisans and bring a piece of Ishigaki back home with us.

For our final dinner on the island, we chose Hitoshi Ishiganto, a highly acclaimed restaurant known for its exceptional seafood. Making a reservation was a challenge, but we managed to secure a table, and it was well worth the effort. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively atmosphere. We ordered a selection of dishes, including tuna sushi sets and sashimi, all incredibly fresh and delicious. The tuna literally melted in my mouth, a testament to the quality of the ingredients. It was a fitting end to our culinary journey on Ishigaki Island.

As the sun began to set, we found ourselves reflecting on our time here. Ishigaki Island had exceeded all our expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and family-friendly activities. We had explored pristine beaches, snorkeled in crystal-clear waters, and indulged in the local cuisine. We had also learned about the island's history and traditions, connecting with the local community in meaningful ways.
One of the highlights of our trip was discovering the Southern Island Star Festival was taking place. While we didn't have a chance to attend the evening concerts or guided tours, we did take some time to stargaze on our own. Ishigaki Island is known for its clear night skies, and we were not disappointed. Away from the city lights, we could see a breathtaking display of stars, constellations, and planets. It was a magical experience, and Astrid was mesmerized as we pointed out the Big Dipper and other familiar constellations.
As we prepare to leave Ishigaki tomorrow, I am filled with gratitude for the memories we have created here. This family adventure has been more than just a vacation; it has been an opportunity to connect with each other and with the world around us. We have learned, grown, and shared experiences that will stay with us for a lifetime. And while I am looking forward to returning to Berlin and our familiar routines, I know that a part of me will always remain on this beautiful island.
Perhaps we'll return next August, making sure to coincide our visit with the Southern Island Star Festival, or maybe even try to catch the sagaribana flowers in bloom. Until then, Ishigaki, arigato!
