Day 8: Discovering Ishigaki's Hidden Gems: Caves, Parks, and Culinary Delights
Explore Ishigaki's natural wonders and savor local flavors. From stalactite caves to ramen, our family adventure uncovers the island's best.
Exploring the Heart of Ishigaki
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the diverse offerings of Ishigaki, from its geological wonders to its serene parks and, of course, its delicious food. It's amazing how much this island has to offer, and I'm so excited to share our experiences with you. Astrid, especially, was bouncing with anticipation for the cave!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Vagabundo. I was excited to try this place, as I'd heard they offer a fusion of Japanese and Mexican cuisine. While Maximilian opted for a classic burrito, I decided to try their tofu breakfast set. It was a delightful start to the day, providing us with the energy we needed for our adventures ahead. Astrid enjoyed some soy milk.
Our first stop was the Ishigaki Stalactite Cave. The cave was formed over 200,000 years ago and stretches for 3.2 kilometers, with about 660 meters open to the public. As we descended into the cool depths, we were immediately struck by the otherworldly beauty of the formations. The slender stalactites, illuminated by colorful lights, resembled trees in a forest. Astrid was captivated, pointing out shapes that looked like animals and mythical creatures. I couldn't help but marvel at the natural processes that had sculpted this underground wonderland over millennia. It was fascinating to learn that the cave had once been submerged, as evidenced by the marine fossils embedded in the limestone.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the most unexpected places.

Emerging from the cool embrace of the cave, we next sought the tranquility of Painuhamacho Ryokuchi Park. This park is a true sanctuary, offering vast green spaces filled with native flora and fauna. We strolled along winding paths, taking in the beauty of the seasonal flowers. Astrid loved running around and exploring, while Maximilian and I enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. We found a perfect spot for a picnic, spreading out our blanket and enjoying the snacks we had packed. It was the perfect way to recharge before our next adventure.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way to Yuhi. This spot is renowned for its stunning sunset views. We found a comfortable place to sit and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The hues of orange, pink, and purple blended seamlessly, casting a magical glow over the landscape. It was a moment of pure serenity, a perfect reminder of the simple joys in life. I was so glad we could share this moment together as a family.

For lunch, we decided on Pizzeria il Trecorde. The aroma of wood-fired pizza filled the air as we entered. This pizzeria is known for its Neapolitan pizzas and Southern Italian dishes, made with local ingredients. We ordered a classic Margherita and a seasonal special featuring Ishigaki Island tuna. The pizzas were cooked to perfection, with a crispy crust and flavorful toppings. Astrid devoured her pizza, and Maximilian and I savored every bite.

As evening approached, our stomachs started rumbling again, and we headed to Ikkyu Ramen. This unassuming eatery is famous for its Gyu Soba and unique goat broth soup. I was a bit hesitant to try the goat broth, but I decided to be adventurous. To my surprise, it was absolutely delicious, rich and flavorful. Maximilian opted for the Gyu Soba, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Astrid, being a bit less adventurous, had a simple ramen with chicken. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration. I am glad that the restaurant offered non-goat options for Astrid.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a quick stop at Coralway. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs to remember our trip. Coralway offers a variety of local snacks and unique gifts. I found some beautiful Ryukyu glass trinkets and some local sweets for my colleagues back in Berlin. Astrid chose a cute little plushie of a Shisa, a traditional Okinawan guardian lion.

As we walked back, hand in hand, I reflected on the day. Ishigaki Island had truly captured our hearts. The blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and culinary delights made it a perfect destination for our family adventure. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings, as we plan to visit the Yoko Gushiken Monument, the Banna Park Insect Museum and the Arakawa Falls. I am sure Astrid will be delighted to see the insects at the museum. And I am also looking forward to unwinding at Chaka Chaka bar tomorrow evening after a long day.
Tonight, I'm especially grateful for the moments we shared, the memories we created, and the delicious food we enjoyed. Ishigaki Island is truly a gem, and I can't wait to explore more of its wonders.
