Desert Adventures in the Merzouga Region

Whispers of the Sahara

Today was a symphony of sand and sun, a day where the vastness of the Sahara truly sank into my soul. It's incredible how a landscape so seemingly barren can be so full of life, sound, and subtle beauty. The Merzouga region has completely captivated me, and I can't wait to share the details of our adventures.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Merzouga. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, a welcome contrast to the cool desert morning. Fuelled up, we set our sights on the legendary Lala Lallia Gran Dune. As we approached, its massive form rose from the landscape, a testament to the power of nature and time.

Lala Lallia, meaning highest sacred point in the Berber language, stands approximately 330 feet (100 meters) above the surrounding dunes. Reaching its summit was a challenge, each step sinking slightly into the soft sand. The sun was already intense, typical for September in Merzouga, where temperatures can soar. I was grateful for my hat and sunglasses, two essentials I made sure not to forget after my earlier packing mishaps.

The panoramic view from the top was simply breathtaking. The seemingly endless expanse of dunes stretched out in every direction, their undulating forms painted in shades of gold and ochre. The wind whispered secrets across the landscape, a constant reminder of the desert's dynamic nature. I took out my recording equipment, hoping to capture the subtle sounds of the Sahara. The wind, the shifting sand – these were the sounds I wanted to preserve.

The desert is a book, and each grain of sand tells a story.

After descending from Lala Lallia, we spent the afternoon exploring the area around Merzouga. The landscape is dotted with small villages, each with its own unique charm. We visited a local Berber family, sharing tea and stories. Their warmth and hospitality were truly touching, a reminder that human connection can thrive even in the most remote environments.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Snack Mustapha. We savored traditional Moroccan dishes, the flavorful tagines and couscous providing a delicious taste of the local cuisine. The spices were intoxicating, each bite a burst of flavor that reflected the region's rich culinary heritage. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes when I return to Potsdam, Lena would love them.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way back to Merzouga, the golden light casting long shadows across the dunes. We decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Restaurant Berbere Palace Hotel Merzouga. The ambiance was elegant, a welcome respite after a day of desert exploration. The food was exquisite, a fusion of traditional Moroccan flavors and modern culinary techniques.

After dinner, we decided to unwind at Bar TABAA. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, the perfect place to reflect on the day's adventures. We shared stories and laughter, the bonds of friendship strengthened by our shared experiences in the Sahara. I even tried my hand at playing the bouzouki, attempting to recreate some traditional Greek melodies. It wasn't quite the same as playing back home in Potsdam, but the desert air seemed to lend a unique resonance to the music.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can still feel the warmth of the sun on my skin and the sand between my toes. The Merzouga region has exceeded all my expectations, a place of stunning beauty and profound cultural richness. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible landscape with my friends.

Tomorrow, we're embarking on more desert adventures with Morocco Desert Tours and Bivouac Merzouga Experience. I am looking forward to see what the next day brings. I am also planning to visit DRISS FOSSILS AND MINERLAS SHOP, as I am keen to find a unique souvenir. Before that, we'll grab breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Chez Youssef and lunch at Snack le cedre. For dinner, we're planning to try Restaurant & Cafe Zaid Merzouga.

The Sahara has a way of getting under your skin, of leaving an indelible mark on your soul. I know that the memories of this trip will stay with me long after I return to the familiar streets of Potsdam. And who knows, maybe I'll even convince Lena to join me on a future desert adventure.
