A Day of Serenity and History in Kyoto

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the natural beauty and rich history of Kyoto. Lena and I, along with the kids, embarked on an adventure that took us from the enchanting Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights, delightful flavors, and unforgettable family moments.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Cellar Kyoto. Tucked away, this restaurant felt like a hidden gem, and the reviews I had read online about its cozy atmosphere and delicious food were spot on. We enjoyed a selection of pastries, fresh fruit, and strong coffee, fueling up for our day of exploration. The kids were particularly excited about the pastries, and Lena and I appreciated the quiet ambiance before the day's adventures truly began.

With our bellies full, we headed towards Arashiyama, eager to experience the famed bamboo forest. The journey itself was an experience, as we took a local train that wound its way through the outskirts of Kyoto. As we stepped off the train, the air was noticeably fresher, carrying a hint of earthy fragrance. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the entrance to the bamboo grove.

As we entered the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, we were immediately enveloped in a sea of towering green stalks. Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting dappled shadows on the path below. The kids were mesmerized, their eyes wide with wonder as they gazed up at the seemingly endless columns of bamboo. Lena and I held hands, sharing a moment of quiet appreciation for the sheer beauty of nature. Walking through the grove was like entering another world, a sanctuary of tranquility far removed from the bustling city. The gentle rustling of the bamboo leaves in the breeze created a soothing melody, adding to the magical atmosphere. I couldn't resist snapping photos at every turn, trying to capture the essence of this breathtaking place. It's a challenge to describe the feeling of being surrounded by such immense natural beauty; it's something you truly have to experience firsthand. I made a mental note to try and find some bamboo shoots when I got back home; I think Lena would love a Cypriot stifado with bamboo shoots.

Leaving the bamboo forest, we made our way to Tenryu-ji Temple, a short walk away. This Zen temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its exquisite gardens. As we entered the temple grounds, we were greeted by a serene landscape of meticulously manicured lawns, ancient trees, and a tranquil pond. The Sogenchi Garden, designed by Muso Soseki, was a masterpiece of landscape architecture. The kids were fascinated by the koi swimming in the pond, their bright colors flashing beneath the surface. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly impressed by the way the garden seamlessly blended with the surrounding natural scenery. We spent a peaceful hour exploring the temple grounds, soaking in the atmosphere of calm and contemplation. It was a welcome respite from the crowds of tourists, a chance to reconnect with ourselves and appreciate the beauty of simplicity. I tried to explain to the kids a little bit about Zen Buddhism, but I'm not sure they fully grasped the concept. Maybe I'll pick up a book about it when we get back to Berlin and we can learn together.

After our visit to Tenryu-ji, our stomachs started to rumble, signaling that it was time for lunch. We decided to try Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, a restaurant known for its tonkatsu. The restaurant was conveniently located near Kyoto Station, making it an easy stop on our way to our next destination. We were seated at a cozy table and presented with a menu featuring a variety of tonkatsu options. I opted for the classic pork loin cutlet, while Lena chose the chicken katsu. The kids, predictably, both went for the simpler pork cutlet set. When our meals arrived, we were immediately impressed by the presentation. The tonkatsu was perfectly golden brown and crispy, served with a side of shredded cabbage, miso soup, and rice. The aroma was irresistible, and we eagerly dug in. The tonkatsu was cooked to perfection, the pork tender and juicy, the breading light and crisp. The miso soup was rich and flavorful, and the shredded cabbage provided a refreshing counterpoint to the richness of the pork. The kids devoured their meals, proclaiming it the best lunch they had ever had. Lena and I wholeheartedly agreed. It was a satisfying and delicious meal, a perfect example of the simple elegance of Japanese cuisine. I made a mental note to try and recreate the tonkatsu at home; I think it would be a hit with our friends in Berlin.

With our appetites sated, we made our way to Nijo Castle, another UNESCO World Heritage site. This historic castle, built in the early 17th century, served as the residence of the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period. As we entered the castle grounds, we were transported back in time. The imposing gates, the massive stone walls, the intricate architecture – all spoke of a bygone era of power and grandeur. We explored the Ninomaru Palace, the main building of the castle, marveling at the ornate interiors and the beautiful painted screens. The kids were fascinated by the nightingale floors, designed to chirp like birds when walked upon, a clever security measure to detect intruders. We wandered through the gardens, admiring the meticulously manicured lawns, the serene ponds, and the ancient trees. The castle was a testament to the skill and artistry of Japanese craftsmen, a living reminder of the country's rich history. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to live in this castle centuries ago, to be a part of the shogunate, to witness the events that shaped Japan's destiny. It was a humbling and awe-inspiring experience.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a nightcap at L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its unique cocktails and magical atmosphere. Finding the bar was an adventure in itself, as it was tucked away in a small alleyway, its entrance marked only by a discreet sign. As we stepped inside, we were transported to another world. The bar was dimly lit, with a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The walls were lined with shelves filled with bottles of exotic liquors and strange artifacts. The bartender, a charismatic Frenchman, greeted us warmly and offered us a seat at the bar. We ordered a round of cocktails, each one a work of art in itself. The bartender mixed and poured with flair, adding a touch of magic to each drink. The kids sipped on non-alcoholic concoctions, their eyes wide with wonder as they watched the bartender's every move. Lena and I savored our cocktails, enjoying the complex flavors and the enchanting atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day, a moment of relaxation and indulgence before heading back to our hotel. I was so glad we found this place; it was exactly the kind of unique experience we were looking for. I'll definitely be recommending it to my readers.

Tonight, I'm especially grateful that I remembered to pack our adapters for electronics. However, I'm kicking myself for forgetting the sunscreen! The sun was stronger than I anticipated, and I can already feel a slight burn on my face. And while we managed to communicate, a Japanese phrasebook would have been incredibly helpful. Note to self: add those to the essentials list for future trips! Despite these minor hiccups, today was an absolute triumph. I am happy that Lena and the kids are having a great time.
