Whispers of the West Bank

Today, I ventured into the realm of pharaohs and archaeologists, trading the familiar comforts of the Iberotel Luxor Hotel for the mysteries that lie across the Nile on Luxor's West Bank. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring architecture, intriguing history, and a deeper connection to the stories etched into the very stones beneath my feet. It's amazing to think that just a few hours away from Berlin, I'm walking in the footsteps of legends.

Our day began, as usual, with a hearty breakfast at the Iberotel Luxor Hotel Restaurant. Fuelling up for a day of exploration is essential, and the hotel's spread never disappoints. Afterwards, I met up with my friends, and we set off to the West Bank, eager to explore its ancient wonders.

Our first stop was the magnificent Deir el-Bahari, a complex of mortuary temples and tombs. The main attraction here is the Temple of Hatshepsut, a female pharaoh who dared to defy convention and left behind a legacy that continues to inspire. The temple's design is simply breathtaking, with its series of colonnaded terraces rising up against the dramatic backdrop of the cliffs. It felt like stepping into a scene from a historical epic, imagining the ceremonies and rituals that once took place within those walls. The sheer scale of the structure is humbling, a testament to the power and ambition of ancient Egypt.

Wandering through the temple, I was struck by the intricate details of the hieroglyphs and carvings that adorned the walls. They tell stories of Hatshepsut's reign, her divine birth, and her successful trade expeditions. It’s incredible how these ancient artists managed to capture so much life and emotion in their work, even after thousands of years, the colors still retained their vibrancy, adding to the immersive experience. The temple is not just a monument to a pharaoh, but also a gallery of ancient art.

The stones of Luxor whisper tales of ambition, ingenuity, and the enduring human spirit.

Leaving Deir el-Bahari, we headed to Carter House, the former home of Howard Carter, the archaeologist who discovered Tutankhamun's tomb. As someone who enjoys a good mystery novel, it was fascinating to walk through the rooms where Carter planned and executed his groundbreaking excavation. The house itself is a modest mud-brick structure, but it holds immense historical significance. You can almost feel the excitement and anticipation that must have filled the air during those momentous years.

The house has been restored and decorated with pictures and tools of the excavation. An exact replica of Tutankhamun's burial chamber has been constructed on the edge of the garden along with an exhibition relating to the discovery of the tomb. The replica has faithfully copied the shape of the original tomb, but only the burial chamber has been reproduced here. It’s a humbling experience to stand in the replica of Tutankhamun's tomb, imagining the moment Carter first peered into the burial chamber and saw the treasures within. It brings the story to life in a way that no museum exhibit ever could. I made sure to get some pictures, although I did miss the extra camera battery I had forgotten.

For lunch, we stopped at Aboudi Coffee Break, a local spot that came highly recommended. The reviews didn't lie! I had a delicious and refreshing mango milkshake, while my friends enjoyed some local dishes. Aboudi Coffee Break is located opposite the Luxor Temple, offering a lovely view. It's the perfect place to relax and recharge after a morning of sightseeing. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere was relaxed and authentic. It's these kinds of local experiences that really make a trip special.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Casa di Napoli for dinner. After a week of Egyptian cuisine, we were all craving something familiar, and this Italian restaurant hit the spot. The pizzas were delicious, with thin, crispy crusts and flavorful toppings. It was a taste of home in the heart of Luxor. The ambiance was lovely, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end a long and fulfilling day.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Wine Palace, a local bar that promised a relaxed atmosphere and a good selection of drinks. I opted for a local beer, while my friends tried some Egyptian wines. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore the Valley of the Queens and the Tombs of the Nobles. I'm excited to delve deeper into the history of this fascinating region and uncover more of its hidden treasures. Lena would have loved this trip, especially the visit to Carter House. Maybe next time I can convince her to come along, and we can explore these ancient sites together.
