A Queen's Legacy and Flavors of Luxor

Today was a day of exploring the West Bank's historical wonders and indulging in a diverse culinary scene. From the grandeur of a female pharaoh's temple to the solemn presence of ancient statues, and from the aromatic spices of India to the refined tastes of France, Luxor offered a rich tapestry of experiences.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Iberotel Luxor Hotel Restaurant. Fuelled up and ready for adventure, Lena and I, along with our friends, set off to explore the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut. The morning sun cast long shadows as we approached the temple, a magnificent structure built into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahri. The temple, dedicated to the female Pharaoh Hatshepsut, is a stunning example of ancient Egyptian architecture, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape. I was immediately struck by the temple's grandeur and unique design. The terraced levels, connected by ramps, created a sense of ascending to a higher realm. The intricate carvings and hieroglyphs on the walls told stories of Hatshepsut's reign, her divine birth, and her successful trade expeditions. It was fascinating to learn about a woman who defied convention and ruled Egypt with such power and grace. As I wandered through the courtyards and chapels, I couldn't help but admire the scale and complexity of the temple. The Temple was built with sandstone blocks quarried from nearby hillsides and then transported to the site by boat. Lena, ever the artist, was captivated by the temple's beautiful setting, nestled in a picturesque valley surrounded by mountains. The Temple's design reflects both religious and political aspects of Hatshepsut's reign as Pharaoh. We spent a good couple of hours exploring the temple, soaking in the atmosphere and learning about its history. The sun was starting to beat down, so we made sure to stay hydrated and apply sunscreen, remembering the guidebooks' advice to visit early or late in the afternoon to avoid the intense heat. I also made sure to bring a hat, which I had thankfully packed, unlike my sunglasses which I had forgotten back in Berlin.

Next on our itinerary were the Colossi of Memnon. These two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III stand guard on the West Bank, remnants of his mortuary temple. Though much of the temple has disappeared over time, the Colossi remain, imposing figures that have stood for over 3,400 years. Arriving at the Colossi, I was struck by their sheer size. Each statue stands about 18 meters tall, weathered and worn by centuries of wind and sand. I tried to imagine what the original mortuary temple must have looked like, with these colossal statues flanking its entrance. The Colossi of Memnon have been standing for thousands of years but have only sometimes been well-preserved. They were damaged by an earthquake in 27 BC which caused one statue to collapse entirely while the other was severely damaged but still standing. The Colossi of Memnon also played an important role in Greek mythology. According to legend, they were built to honor King Memnon, who was killed in battle against Achilles during the Trojan War. The statues became a popular tourist attraction for Greeks and Romans who visited Egypt during this period. We took some photos, marveling at these ancient giants and contemplating the history they have witnessed. It was a humbling experience to stand in their presence, feeling a connection to the distant past.

By lunchtime, we were ready for a change of scenery and a culinary adventure. We decided to try A Taste of India, a restaurant in Luxor that promised authentic Indian flavors. I was curious to see how Indian cuisine would compare to the traditional Egyptian fare we had been enjoying. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a menu that featured a wide range of Indian dishes. We ordered a selection of curries, biryanis, and naan bread, eager to sample the diverse flavors. I opted for the butter chicken, a classic dish that never fails to satisfy. The food was delicious, a welcome change from the local cuisine. The spices were fragrant, the curries were rich and creamy, and the naan bread was soft and fluffy. It was a taste of home away from home, reminding me of the Indian restaurants in Berlin. A Taste of India is one of the few restaurants in Luxor that has a clearly marked menu with English speaking staff who understand what “vegan” means. The owner plays Bollywood music. The staff were attentive. Humour was evident, but most importantly the food was excellent. Lena, who is always up for trying new things, enjoyed the experience as well. It was a fun and flavorful break in our day of historical exploration.

As the sun began to set, we returned to the Iberotel Luxor Hotel to freshen up before our evening plans. For dinner, we had made a reservation at the 1886 Restaurant, located in the Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor. This restaurant promised a fine dining experience with French cuisine, a stark contrast to our lunchtime Indian feast. The Sofitel Winter Palace is one of Egypt's most historic hotels and one of the best places to stay in Luxor. As soon as I saw it on Booking.com I knew I absolutely had to book a stay here! The Winter Palace is just as impressive on the inside as it is from the outside. The lobby is quite spectacular, with dazzling chandeliers, beautiful tiled floors, oriental rugs, antique furniture and sumptuous red couches. The 1886 inspires creations from crayfish to risotto at this opulent Luxor restaurant. I was excited to experience the elegance and sophistication of this renowned establishment. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the restaurant's impeccable decor. Chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting a warm glow on the red velvet chairs and candlelit tables. The atmosphere was refined and romantic, a world away from the bustling streets of Luxor. The dress code was strictly enforced – jacket and tie for men, smart attire for ladies – adding to the sense of occasion. We were seated at a table overlooking the gardens, serenaded by the quiet strums of a guitarist. The menu was a testament to classic French cuisine, with dishes like foie gras, escargots, and lamb. I decided to try the lamb, while Lena opted for the prawns. The food was exquisite, each dish a work of art. The flavors were delicate and nuanced, the presentation was impeccable, and the service was attentive and professional. It was a culinary journey that transported us to the heart of France. The wine list is diverse, it can satisfy the needs of all clients. The Sofitel Winter Palace has a superb location in downtown Luxor. Within a 5-minute walk you can reach Luxor Temple, while the city's train station is 15 minutes away on foot. There are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants in the direct environment of the Winter Palace in case you want to do some shopping or have a drink or meal outside of the hotel.

As I reflected on the day's experiences, I realized how much Luxor had to offer. From its ancient monuments to its diverse culinary scene, this city is a treasure trove of culture and history.
