A Journey's End, A New Beginning

As my solo pilgrimage along the Kumano Kodo neared its end, I found myself caught between the bittersweet feeling of completing a long journey and the excitement of carrying its lessons forward. The final day was a tapestry of serene landscapes, spiritual awakenings, and, of course, the delightful flavors of the Kumano region. It was a day to soak in the last moments of this profound experience, to reflect on the path I had walked, and to prepare myself for the journey back to Berlin, enriched and transformed.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Sansaro Cafe. I was eager to try their local coffee blends one last time. The cafe was a cozy haven, filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the quiet murmur of fellow travelers. Sipping my coffee, I felt a sense of gratitude for the warm hospitality and the peaceful atmosphere that had been a constant throughout my stay. Ms. Uzawa, the owner, is a dynamic soul, who made me feel at home. It was the perfect way to start a day dedicated to reflection and exploration.

Sometimes, the end of a journey is just the beginning of a new perspective.

After breakfast, I set out to explore Kumano Kodo Park. The park is a sprawling natural reserve that encapsulates the essence of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage. As I walked through the park's trails, I was surrounded by lush greenery, the air thick with the scent of cedar and the gentle sounds of nature. The park seemed to echo the spiritual whispers of centuries of pilgrims who had walked these paths before me. It was a place where the boundary between the physical and the spiritual blurred, inviting introspection and a deep connection with the natural world.

Next on the itinerary was Yoshino Kumano National Park. This vast park spans across three prefectures and is home to some of Japan's most breathtaking landscapes. I was particularly drawn to the park's dense forests and spectacular coastline. The park has drawn nature worshippers and religious pilgrims for over 1,000 years. The synergy between nature and spirituality is a theme that echoes throughout the park.

For lunch, I ventured to Kakinoate. I savored local ingredients and traditional recipes. It was a delightful culinary experience that further deepened my appreciation for the region's rich cultural heritage.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of souvenir shopping at Road Station Oku-kumanokodo Hongu. This roadside station offered a variety of local crafts and produce. I picked up some Otonashi Tea, carefully cultivated in the mountains of Kumano Main Shrine. I also grabbed some Kumano soda pop. It was a perfect way to take a piece of Kumano Kodo back home with me.

As evening approached, I made my way to Tororoya for dinner. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Tororo, a nutritious ingredient, has long been popular in post towns along the way of walking along old roads. I enjoyed a delicious meal featuring local ingredients and traditional recipes. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and reflection.

Reflecting on my time on the Kumano Kodo, I realized how much this solo journey had offered me. The solitude allowed for deep introspection, and the physical challenge of the trails pushed me beyond my comfort zone. I felt a renewed sense of appreciation for nature and a deeper understanding of myself. The kindness and warmth of the people I met along the way touched my heart, reminding me of the universal human connection that transcends cultural boundaries. As a Cypriot living in Berlin, I often find myself caught between two worlds, but here, in the heart of Japan, I felt a sense of belonging that was both comforting and empowering. I am already looking forward to sharing my experiences with Lena and planning our next adventure together.

The Kumano Kodo is more than just a pilgrimage route; it is a journey of self-discovery, a celebration of nature, and a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit. As I prepare to leave this sacred place, I carry with me not just memories, but a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper connection to the world around me. I encourage everyone to embark on their own Kumano Kodo journey, to walk these ancient paths, and to discover the transformative power that lies within.
And with that, my Kumano Kodo adventure comes to an end. Stay tuned for more travel tales!
