A Day of Spiritual Awakening and Culinary Delights

Today was a profound immersion into the heart of Shingu, a city steeped in history and spirituality. I had the chance to visit ancient shrines and savor the local flavors. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and connection with the rich cultural heritage of this region.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Takehara. I opted for the tuna set meal, a local specialty. The tuna was incredibly fresh, a testament to the proximity of Kii-Katsuura Station to the fishing port. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration and spiritual awakening.

My first stop was the magnificent Kumano Hayatama Taisha. The vermilion-lacquered shrine stood out beautifully against the lush green backdrop. I learned that it was built to enshrine the Kumano deities who had first descended on the Gotobiki-Iwa rock in Kamikura Shrine. The shrine is one of the three grand shrines of Kumano, collectively known as Kumano Sanzan.

The ancient Nagi tree on the grounds, believed to be over 1,000 years old, was a sight to behold. I discovered that its leaves are considered lucky charms for wealth and a happy marriage. I spent some time in the Shinpokan museum, admiring the collection of national treasures. It's amazing how much history is packed into this one location!

The journey of a pilgrim is not just about reaching a destination, but about the transformation that occurs within.

Next on my itinerary was Kamikura Shrine. The climb up the 538 steep stone steps was challenging, especially in the August heat. But reaching the top was worth every drop of sweat. The panoramic views of Shingu and the Kumano-nada Sea were breathtaking.

I was fascinated to learn that Kamikura Shrine is believed to be the original sacred site where the Kumano deities first descended to Earth. The Gotobiki-Iwa, a massive rock outcropping, is the shrine's goshintai, a sacred object believed to be imbued with divine power. Touching the rock, I felt a sense of connection to the ancient pilgrims who had walked this path before me.

After descending from Kamikura Shrine, I visited Tokei Shrine. Although it's a bit outside of Shingu (located in Tanabe), I decided to make the trip. This shrine is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. The grounds were peaceful, with ancient camphor trees providing shade. I learned about the legend of Benkei, the famed warrior-monk, who was said to be born in Tanabe. The shrine enshrines all the kami enshrined in the Kumano Sanzan, making it a significant site for pilgrims.

For lunch, I stopped at Akihei, a restaurant with a long history dating back to the Meiji period. I enjoyed a traditional Japanese meal, savoring the flavors of the region. The calm and nostalgic atmosphere of the restaurant added to the experience.

In the evening, I decided to check out Why Kumano, a local bar. It turned out to be a cozy spot with a friendly atmosphere. I enjoyed a drink and chatted with some locals, learning more about the area's culture and traditions.

Before heading back to Jokiin, I had dinner at Hinoki Steak House. I opted for the Kumano beef hamburger steak, a local specialty. The meat was tender and juicy, a perfect ending to a day of exploring Shingu's culinary scene.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the spiritual and cultural richness of Shingu. The ancient shrines, the stunning natural beauty, and the delicious local cuisine have left an indelible mark on my soul. It's experiences like these that make travel so rewarding. I am excited about tomorrow’s adventure to Doro Kyo Gorge and the Kumano Boat River Cruise. I'm also hoping to pick up a portable charger at the Road Station Oku-kumanokodo Hongu, since I forgot mine!

There's a festival coming up on August 13th, the Kumano Xufuku Manto Festival, which sounds amazing. It features a ceremony to honor Jofuku, who is said to have arrived in the area around 2200 years ago, and a fireworks display on the Kumano-gawa riverbed. Too bad I'll miss it, but perhaps some of you can check it out!
