Saturday in the Blue Pearl

Today was a day of wandering and wonder in Chefchaouen. Jean-Pierre and I embraced the relaxed pace of a Saturday, allowing ourselves to get lost in the blue-washed streets and discover hidden corners of this captivating town. It's days like these, without a strict agenda, that often lead to the most delightful surprises and authentic experiences.

Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Casa Arina. The aroma of Moroccan spices and freshly baked bread filled the air as we settled into a cozy spot. I opted for a traditional Moroccan chicken salad, while Jean-Pierre chose the tagine. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. After breakfast, we decided to take a stroll towards the Chefchaouen Gate.

The Chefchaouen Gate, with its intricate architecture, stands as a testament to the city's rich history. As we approached, I couldn't help but marvel at the detailed craftsmanship. The gate isn't just an entrance; it's a threshold to another world, a place where time seems to slow down and the beauty of Moroccan culture unfolds. Jean-Pierre, ever the architect, was particularly fascinated by the blend of Berber and Andalusian influences evident in the design.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant life that unfolds within them.

We then wandered towards Park Sidi Abdelhamid, a green oasis in the heart of the blue city. The park offered a tranquil escape from the bustling medina. Children played, families picnicked, and locals gathered to chat and relax. It was a scene of everyday life unfolding against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. I took a moment to sit on a bench, close my eyes, and simply soak in the sounds of the city – the gentle murmur of conversations, the distant call to prayer, and the rustling of leaves in the breeze. It was a moment of pure serenity.

As lunchtime approached, our stomachs began to rumble, guiding us towards Restaurant Jbaria. This charming eatery promised an authentic Moroccan culinary experience, and it certainly delivered. We shared a flavorful couscous and a hearty tagine, savoring each bite. The spices were perfectly balanced, and the ingredients were fresh and locally sourced. It was a true taste of Morocco. Jean-Pierre, always eager to try new dishes, even ventured to sample the harira soup.

With our appetites satisfied, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy. Our destination: Original Moroccan Clothes, a shop known for its handcrafted garments and traditional attire. I have always adored beautifully made clothes. The shop was a treasure trove of vibrant colors, intricate embroidery, and rich textures. I found myself drawn to a beautifully embroidered caftan, while Jean-Pierre admired the intricate shawls and accessories. The friendly staff shared their knowledge of the garments, helping us choose the perfect pieces that resonated with our personal styles. I ended up purchasing a beautiful shawl, a perfect reminder of our time in Chefchaouen.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Bab Souk for dinner. Bab Souk, or the Market Gate, is one of the main entrances to the medina and a bustling hub of activity. The gate itself is an imposing structure, a reminder of the city's history and its role as a center of commerce.

The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere. We settled into a table and ordered a selection of Moroccan dishes, including tagine and grilled meats. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. As we dined, we watched the street performers and listened to the sounds of the city. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tonight, as I sit here writing, I am filled with a sense of contentment. Chefchaouen has a way of captivating you, of drawing you into its blue embrace and leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Cave Acher and Plaza España. I am already looking forward to the adventures that await us.

This trip to Chefchaouen with Jean-Pierre has been especially meaningful for me. As many of you know, I have always cherished my Italian heritage, and I find that exploring new cultures and traditions helps me to better understand my own roots. There is something incredibly enriching about immersing oneself in a different way of life, of learning about the history, the art, and the cuisine of a place. And sharing these experiences with Jean-Pierre, my partner in life and adventure, makes them all the more special.

As we prepare for our adventures tomorrow, I am reminded of a quote by the great Italian writer, Italo Calvino:

You take delight not in a city's seven or seventy wonders, but in the answer it gives to a question of yours.

Chefchaouen has certainly answered many of my questions, and I am eager to see what other wonders it holds. I am also eager to share more of those wonders with you, my dear readers. Stay tuned for more tales from the Blue Pearl! I feel so grateful to be here with Jean-Pierre, experiencing the magic of Chefchaouen together. It's moments like these that make life truly special. I am looking forward to tomorrow and the new adventures that await us.

Before I close for tonight, I must share a funny anecdote from our shopping excursion. As I was admiring a beautiful Berber rug, I attempted to haggle with the shopkeeper, drawing on my (admittedly rusty) Italian bargaining skills. Jean-Pierre watched with amusement as I tried to negotiate a lower price, using a mix of Italian phrases and hand gestures. The shopkeeper, though clearly entertained, remained firm on his price. In the end, I relented and paid the full amount, but not without a good laugh. It seems my bargaining skills need a bit of polishing! As we walked away, Jean-Pierre quipped, Perhaps you should stick to librarian skills, cara mia. We both burst out laughing, and I had to admit, he had a point. Some skills, it seems, are best left to the professionals.
