Sunday Adventures in the Blue City
Today was a day of exploration and discovery here in Chefchaouen. With Jean-Pierre by my side, I embraced the spirit of adventure, venturing beyond the well-trodden paths of the blue medina. It’s amazing how much more you can experience when you allow yourself to wander and be open to the unexpected.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at FORNACCIO- Coffe & Kitchen. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries filled the air, creating a cozy atmosphere that was perfect for starting our day. I savored a cappuccino while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a traditional Moroccan mint tea. It's funny, even in Morocco, Jean-Pierre still seeks out his familiar comforts! Sipping our drinks, we discussed our plans for the day, eager to uncover more of Chefchaouen's hidden gems.

First on our list was Cave Acher. The drive there was an experience in itself, offering stunning views of the Rif Mountains. As we approached the cave, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. I’ve always been fascinated by caves, their mysterious depths hinting at secrets hidden beneath the earth. The cave is located on the road to Oued Laou, a short drive from Chefchaouen. We met our guide, who provided us with helmets and flashlights, and after a safety briefing, we were ready to descend into the depths.

The interior of Cave Acher was breathtaking. The cave was filled with high chambers, limestone formations, and stalactites in different shades. The air was cool and damp, and the silence was broken only by the occasional drip of water. As we ventured deeper, our guide shared stories and legends associated with the cave. It felt like stepping into another world, a place untouched by time. Jean-Pierre, ever the architect, was particularly captivated by the cave's geological formations. He marveled at the way the water had sculpted the rock over centuries, creating intricate patterns and shapes.
The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
After our subterranean adventure, we surfaced, blinking in the sunlight, and made our way to Plaza España (pinsapar). This park offered a welcome respite from the ruggedness of the cave. Located in Beni M'Hammed, getting there involved a scenic drive. The plaza itself was a lovely, flat area with benches and tables, perfect for relaxation. We strolled through the greenery, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. It was a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, and we saw families picnicking and children playing. Jean-Pierre and I found a quiet bench and simply sat, soaking in the tranquility. It was a moment to appreciate the simple pleasures of life, the beauty of nature, and the joy of shared experiences.

For lunch, we decided to try Sandwich Chez Aziz, a local spot known for its quick and tasty sandwiches. I opted for a chicken shawarma, while Jean-Pierre chose a vegetarian falafel. The sandwiches were flavorful and satisfying, providing the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventure. As we ate, we watched the locals go about their day, observing the rhythm of life in Chefchaouen.

With our appetites sated, we ventured into the medina for some shopping. I had heard about La Botica De La Abuela De Aladdin, a charming soap store known for its artisanal soaps and fragrances. The shop was a sensory delight, filled with the aromas of lavender, rose, and sandalwood. The owner was incredibly friendly, offering us samples of various soaps and explaining the different ingredients used. I couldn't resist purchasing a few fragrance bars to bring back home, each one a fragrant reminder of our time in Chefchaouen.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Bar Oum Rabie for dinner. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance, with soft lighting and traditional Moroccan decor. We ordered a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, and savored the flavors of the slow-cooked meat and vegetables. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, a culinary journey that reflected the rich culture and history of Chefchaouen.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Chefchaouen's scenic viewpoints and wander through the Derb Zaghdoud. I'm particularly excited about capturing the panoramic views from vue panoramique de la plage, hoping to capture the essence of this beautiful city in my photographs. We'll start our day with breakfast at Nous Nous Cafe, followed by lunch at Café Mundial. For dinner, we’re planning to try Tissemlal, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. And perhaps, we’ll cap off the evening with a relaxing drink at COFFEE BREAK chaouen.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Chefchaouen. It's a place that captivates the senses and nourishes the soul, a destination that I will cherish forever.
Back at our lovely Maison D'hôtes Afassi, I journaled about our day, recording every detail so I could share it with you all. Jean-Pierre is already fast asleep, dreaming of more architectural wonders, I’m sure. Until tomorrow, dear readers!
