Hoi An's Embrace: A Day of Discovery

Today in Hoi An felt like stepping into a living postcard, a blend of vibrant culture, tantalizing tastes, and heartwarming encounters. As I reflect on the day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we shared as a family, deepening our connection to this enchanting town.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Nhà hàng Cơm Linh. The restaurant was conveniently located in the ancient town. David and Thandi were excited to try Phở vịt quay (duck noodle soup), which many tourists have praised. The food was delicious and my family was very content.

With our bellies full, we ventured to the Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum. This was more than just a museum; it was an emotional journey through Vietnam's diverse ethnic tapestry. Réhahn's photography beautifully captured the essence of 49 of the 54 ethnic groups, showcasing their unique attire and cultural beliefs.

Thandi was mesmerized by the colorful costumes and the stories behind each portrait. It was a wonderful opportunity to teach her about the importance of preserving cultural heritage, something close to my heart given my own Malawian roots. I was particularly moved by Réhahn's dedication to documenting these communities, some of which are in remote areas and facing the threat of disappearing traditions. The museum is free of charge.

After the museum, we decided to immerse ourselves in the Hoi An Village Experience. We chose the Cycling, Water buffalo riding, Traditional Farming and Fishing Life Experience in Cam Thanh Village. This was a hands-on adventure, where we learned about traditional farming techniques and even had a go at riding a water buffalo. Thandi was absolutely thrilled, giggling as she splashed through the rice paddies. It was a far cry from our life in Bristol, but it grounded us in the simple beauty of rural Vietnam.

Lunch at Red Dragon Restaurant and Cooking Class was another highlight. We didn't just eat; we learned! The cooking class was engaging, and we prepared traditional Vietnamese dishes. David, surprisingly, showed a knack for rolling spring rolls, while Thandi enjoyed crushing herbs with a mortar and pestle. The best part? Savoring our creations afterward, feeling a sense of accomplishment and a deeper appreciation for Vietnamese cuisine.

As the sun began to dip, we strolled through the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, soaking in the magical atmosphere. The December weather was pleasant, with a high of 26°C. The temperature was moderately hot. Though there was a chance of rain, we were lucky to have a dry evening.

For dinner, we chose Little Faifo Restaurant. This charming cafe offered a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The staff were friendly and attentive. I opted for the chicken rice plate, a perfect balance of flavors. David enjoyed the Cao Lau, a local specialty. Thandi, ever adventurous, tried the white rose dumplings. The restaurant is known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

To cap off the evening, David and I snuck away for a quick drink at the Market Bar - Market Terrace. This rooftop bar offered stunning views of the river and expertly crafted cocktails. The happy hour specials were a bonus, and we enjoyed the serene atmosphere before heading back to the Hadana Boutique Resort HoiAn (former Belle Maison Hadana HoiAn). The bar is known for its amazing cocktails.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Sunset view point and Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel [cite: ]. I'm looking forward to experiencing more of Hoi An's beauty and history with my family. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Reaching Out Arts & Crafts [cite: ]. I'm sure Thandi will enjoy it as well.

As I sit here, penning down our adventures, I realize that travel is more than just ticking off destinations. It's about immersing ourselves in new cultures, connecting with local communities, and creating lasting memories with loved ones. Today in Hoi An was a testament to that, a day filled with culture, flavors, and heartwarming moments that I will cherish forever. It reminded me of a quote I once read:

Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.

And how true that is. Each experience, each encounter, adds a new layer to our understanding of the world and ourselves. And as we continue our journey through Vietnam, I'm excited to see what other treasures await us.

P.S. I almost forgot! I need to buy some sunglasses tomorrow. It's sunny in Hoi An, and I forgot to pack them in my luggage. I also need to find some insect repellent. The mosquitos are starting to bite!

Hoi An is truly a magical place, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Goodnight from Vietnam!
