A Day of Discovery in Hoi An
Today was a day of exploring the quieter, more reflective corners of Hoi An, a welcome change of pace after the bustling markets and vibrant streets. It’s amazing how much this town has to offer, from stunning natural beauty to intricate cultural landmarks and heartwarming artisan shops. David, Thandi and I set out with a plan to soak it all in, and Hoi An certainly didn't disappoint.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Orivy Hoi An Local Food Restaurant. The reviews I'd read online raved about its authentic Vietnamese cuisine and peaceful garden setting, and it lived up to every expectation. We savored traditional dishes like Cao Lau and Banh Xeo, each bite bursting with fresh, local flavors. Thandi especially loved the spring rolls, declaring them the best she’s ever had. It’s these simple, genuine culinary experiences that truly make a trip memorable. The restaurant is family-owned which gave it a lovely home-style feeling.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners and simple moments of a journey.
After breakfast, we set off to find the Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel. Tucked away on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, this historical landmark offered a serene escape from the busy streets. It wasn't too far from our hotel, Hadana Boutique Resort HoiAn (former Belle Maison Hadana HoiAn), which made it easy to get to. The chapel, built in 1806, is a testament to the Nguyen Tuong family's rich history and academic achievements. As we wandered through the chapel, we admired the intricate wood carvings and traditional Vietnamese architecture. Learning about the family's contributions to Vietnamese literature and history added a deeper layer of appreciation to our visit. Thandi was fascinated by the ancestral altars and the stories of the family members who once walked these halls. The chapel holds 195 units of documents dating back from the 18th to 20th centuries, which is the largest collection in Hoi An.

Next on our list was Reaching Out Arts & Crafts, a shop I had read about that supports artisans with disabilities. This was more than just a shopping trip; it was an opportunity to support a meaningful cause. The shop is located in the Ancient Town of Hoi An. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a peaceful atmosphere and a beautiful array of handcrafted items. From ceramics recovered from shipwrecks to delicate jewelry and textiles, each piece told a story of skill and resilience. I purchased a stunning hand-painted ceramic bowl, knowing that my purchase would directly contribute to providing job training and employment for differently-abled individuals. Thandi picked out a small, colorful toy, her eyes sparkling with delight. It’s heartwarming to find souvenirs that carry such a positive impact. The staff even whisper to maintain a serene environment, and appreciate sign language because some of them are deaf.

For lunch, we ventured to Mr. Sơn Restaurant, enticed by its reputation for authentic Vietnamese flavors. It was a great choice and we thoroughly enjoyed it. David opted for the Cao Lau, a local noodle specialty, while I savored the Mi Quang, another regional favorite. Thandi, ever adventurous, tried the white rose dumplings and loved them. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. We shared stories and laughter over plates of delicious food, creating memories that we’ll cherish long after we leave Hoi An.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to the sunset viewpoint. I had read about several options, including An Bang Beach and Cua Dai Bridge, but we decided on a spot along the Thu Bon River. We arrived early to secure a good spot and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water and the ancient town. It was a breathtaking sight, and we stood in awe, soaking in the tranquility of the moment. Thandi, mesmerized by the spectacle, snuggled close to us, her small hand in mine. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with cultural immersion and heartwarming experiences. The Cua Dai Bridge is also a great option to watch the sunset.

Dinner tonight was at Circle Restaurant | Hoi An Burgers and Tacos by Circle Cafe. After a day of Vietnamese cuisine, we decided to switch things up with some familiar Western fare. David was happy to have a burger, as was Thandi. I opted for tacos, and we shared some fries. It was a satisfying meal, and the laid-back atmosphere of the restaurant was perfect for winding down after a busy day.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Hoi An with my family. Each day here brings new discoveries and unforgettable memories. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, with our Hoi An Ecotour and lantern-making class! I'm particularly excited about the lantern-making class. I've always been fascinated by the intricate craftsmanship of Vietnamese lanterns, and I can't wait to learn how to make one myself. Thandi is thrilled at the prospect of creating her own colorful lantern to take home as a souvenir. Also coming up in December is the Hoi An - Japan Cultural Exchange program with many activities planned.
