Saturday's Serene Discoveries in the Blue City

Today was a day of soaking in the essence of Chefchaouen, a blend of cultural immersion, historical appreciation, and simply enjoying the breathtaking scenery. From exploring local traditions to witnessing a stunning sunset, it was a day that truly captured the spirit of this Moroccan gem.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Traditional kitchen. I decided to go for traditional Moroccan breakfast, as recommended by Jawad on one of my previous trips to Morocco. It was a simple yet satisfying meal of fried eggs served in olive oil, accompanied by creamy cheese and olives, all enjoyed with warm, crusty bread. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set off to explore the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen. Located within the Kasbah, the museum offered a fascinating insight into the region's rich cultural heritage. I was particularly captivated by the exhibits showcasing traditional costumes, intricate jewelry, and ancient weapons. Seeing these artifacts up close gave me a deeper understanding of the Berber, Arab, and Andalusian influences that have shaped Chefchaouen over the centuries.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are found in the simple act of exploring and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us.

After immersing myself in history, I decided to embark on a scenic hike to the Bouzafer Mosque, also known as the Spanish Mosque. The trail wound its way up a hill, offering panoramic views of the blue city and the surrounding Rif Mountains. As I climbed higher, the cityscape unfolded beneath me, a mesmerizing tapestry of blue hues stretching as far as the eye could see. The mosque itself, built in the 15th century, stood proudly atop the hill, a testament to the region's rich Islamic heritage. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the prayer hall, I was content to wander through the peaceful courtyards, taking in the breathtaking views and soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant Dar El Salam, drawn in by its reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine. I decided to try a traditional tagine, a slow-cooked stew simmered in a conical earthenware pot. The aroma alone was enough to make my mouth water, and the flavors did not disappoint. Tender pieces of lamb mingled with sweet vegetables and fragrant spices, creating a symphony of tastes that danced on my palate. It was the perfect way to refuel after my morning hike.

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to treat myself to a refreshing beverage at Sunset at sunset, a charming bar known for its stunning views and relaxing atmosphere. Perched atop a hill, the bar offered an unparalleled vantage point for watching the sun dip below the horizon. As I sipped on a refreshing glass of mint tea, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, painting the blue city in hues of orange, pink, and gold. It was a truly magical experience, one that I will cherish for years to come.

Dinner tonight was at Restaurant Hamsa. It was a delightful experience, and I opted for one of their vegetarian options, a flavorful tagine filled with fresh vegetables and aromatic spices. The restaurant's rooftop terrace offered stunning views of the city, adding to the ambiance of the evening. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Chefchaouen. From exploring the Ethnographic Museum to hiking to the Bouzafer Mosque and enjoying a sunset at sunset, every moment was a reminder of the magic that lies within this blue city. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Plaza Mohammed V and Park Sidi Abdelhamid, continuing my exploration of this enchanting destination. I am also keen to visit B & H Art Shop.

As Thandi gets older, I find myself wanting to bring her to places like Chefchaouen. I think experiencing different cultures would be incredibly enriching for her, and I can already imagine her eyes widening at the sight of the blue-washed streets. Maybe next time, David and Thandi can join me on one of these adventures. For now, I'll continue to explore and share my experiences with all of you.
