Today, I truly understood why Chefchaouen is called the 'Blue Pearl'. It wasn't just about the color of the buildings; it was about the atmosphere, the people, and the stories etched into every corner of this mesmerizing town. It was a day of getting wonderfully lost and discovering hidden gems, and I can't wait to share it all.

My day began, as most do when I travel, with a quest for good coffee. Café Sindibad, recommended by a local I met yesterday, was the perfect spot. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the crisp mountain air, creating a delightful start to my day. I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast – warm bread, olives, and a spicy harissa dip – while watching the town slowly awaken. Even though I missed David and Thandi, I felt a sense of peace and excitement being here on my own.

Fuelled up and ready to explore, I ventured into the heart of Chefchaouen: the Medina. It's a labyrinth of narrow, winding alleyways, each painted in a different shade of blue. From the palest sky blue to the deepest indigo, the colors were simply breathtaking. I let myself get lost, turning down random streets, never quite knowing what I would find around the next corner. Sometimes it was a small shop selling colorful textiles, other times it was a local artisan crafting intricate leather goods. The sensory overload was incredible – the scent of spices, the sound of Berber music, and the kaleidoscope of blue hues all around.

As I wandered, I stumbled upon the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen. While non-Muslims can't enter, the architecture was stunning from the outside. I took some time to admire the intricate details of the minaret and the beautifully carved wooden doors. The mosque stands as a testament to the town's rich history and deep-rooted Islamic traditions. It was a humbling experience to witness such a significant place of worship.

Next on my list was Plaza Uta el Hamman, the main square in Chefchaouen. It's a bustling hub of activity, with locals and tourists alike gathering to relax, chat, and soak up the atmosphere. I found a spot at Restaurant Terrasse Djebli, overlooking the square, and ordered a tagine for lunch. The flavors were incredible – tender lamb, sweet apricots, and a medley of spices that danced on my tongue. As I savored each bite, I watched the world go by, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a vibrant culture.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy. Chefchaouen is known for its unique crafts, and I was determined to find some souvenirs to take back home. I visited several shops, admiring the handwoven carpets, the colorful ceramics, and the intricate metalwork. I ended up buying a beautiful Berber rug for our living room in Bristol and a set of hand-painted bowls for Thandi. I can already imagine her face lighting up when she sees them!

One thing I've really been trying to focus on during this trip is capturing the essence of Chefchaouen through my photography. I spent hours wandering the streets, snapping photos of everything that caught my eye – the blue-washed walls, the colorful doorways, the smiling faces of the locals. I'm hoping to create a photo album that will allow me to relive this experience for years to come. I am missing my family terribly, but I know that this trip is helping me grow and recharge, and I'll be a better wife and mother because of it.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Restaurant Al Wiam for dinner. The restaurant had a lovely rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the town. I ordered a traditional Moroccan dish of couscous with vegetables and enjoyed it while watching the sky turn a deep shade of orange. The call to prayer echoed through the valley, adding to the magical atmosphere.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Chefchaouen is more than just a pretty town. As I walked back to my guesthouse, I couldn't help but smile. I'm so grateful for this solo adventure, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen and hike up to the Bouzafer Mosque for a panoramic view of the city. And, if I have time, I might just treat myself to a sunset drink at a local bar.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a note in my travel journal: Remember to buy some argan oil before leaving Chefchaouen. It's supposed to be amazing for the skin, and I know David would appreciate it. It's the little things that make a trip special, and I'm determined to make the most of every moment.
