A Blue Awakening

The journey to Chefchaouen was nothing short of epic, a scenic bus ride from Tangier that wound its way through the Rif Mountains. As the landscape transformed, so did my anticipation. This solo adventure, a break from my usual family travels with David and Thandi, felt like a necessary detour—a chance to recharge my creative spirit and immerse myself in a culture so different from my own. I was eager to finally see if the Blue Pearl of Morocco lived up to its reputation.

Stepping off the bus, the crisp February air greeted me, a welcome change from Bristol's damp chill. The temperature was moderately chilly and breezy, perfect for exploring. I quickly realized that I had forgotten to pack my sunscreen, but I made a mental note to buy some tomorrow. My breath caught as I entered the medina, the old town. It was as if I had walked into a dream. Every building, every alleyway, was painted in varying shades of blue, from the palest sky blue to the deepest indigo. The effect was both calming and exhilarating, a visual feast that had my camera working overtime.

My first stop was the Chefchaouen Gate, the iconic entrance to this azure city. It wasn't just a gate; it was a portal into a world where color dictated the mood. The gate was bustling with activity, locals going about their daily lives and tourists snapping photos. I paused, took a deep breath, and stepped through, ready to embrace the unknown.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its color, but in the warmth of its people and the richness of its culture.

Breakfast beckoned, and following a recommendation, I found myself at Cafe Clock. The place was buzzing with a mix of tourists and locals. I settled into a cozy corner and ordered Berber eggs with spiced coffee. The eggs, cooked in a rich tomato sauce with herbs, were a delightful explosion of flavor, and the spiced coffee was the perfect pick-me-up. The cafe's atmosphere was vibrant, filled with chatter and laughter, a perfect start to my day.

With renewed energy, I ventured deeper into the medina, drawn by the imposing structure of the Kasbah. This fortress, built in the 15th century, was initially constructed to defend against Portuguese attacks. Today, it stands as a testament to Chefchaouen's rich history. I explored its walls and towers, imagining the battles fought here centuries ago. The Ethnographic Museum within the Kasbah offered a glimpse into the region's culture, with displays of traditional costumes, musical instruments, and weaponry.

Lunch was calling and Chez Hicham seemed to be the perfect spot. The reviews I had read online spoke of great service and friendly staff and I was keen to experience it myself. I opted for a Moroccan chicken salad, a symphony of flavors that danced on my palate. The restaurant itself was charming, adorned with blue details that echoed the city's aesthetic. I took my time, savoring each bite and soaking in the ambiance.

After lunch, I stumbled upon Blue. concept store, a charming shop filled with locally made crafts. I couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs—a hand-painted ceramic bowl and a small leather pouch—to remind me of my time here. Supporting local artisans is important to me, a way of giving back to the community that has welcomed me so warmly.

As the afternoon waned, I made my way to Ras El Ma, the spring that serves as the town's primary water source. The sound of rushing water was a welcome contrast to the bustling medina. Locals gathered here to wash clothes and chat, a scene that felt both timeless and intimate. I watched as women expertly scrubbed fabrics, their laughter echoing through the air. The verdant hills surrounding the spring provided a stunning backdrop, a reminder of the natural beauty that surrounds this blue city.

Dinner was at Restaurant Bab Ssour, a place recommended for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. I decided to try the Moroccan Lamb Tajin, a slow-cooked stew with lamb, tomatoes, and lemon. The flavors were rich and complex, a true culinary delight. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, the city was bathed in the soft glow of the streetlights. The blue walls seemed to deepen in the twilight, creating a magical atmosphere. I felt a sense of contentment, a feeling of having truly experienced something special. My first day in Chefchaouen had been a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, a sensory overload that I wouldn't trade for anything.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Medina further, visit the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen, and soak in the atmosphere of Plaza Uta el Hamman. I am also hoping to find some more local crafts at Chefchaouen crafts.

I am also reminded of a quote by Albert Schweitzer that resonates deeply with my experiences today: "The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others." This trip is not just about seeing beautiful places, it's about connecting with people and cultures, and giving back in whatever way I can.

Chefchaouen, you have captured my heart. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

P.S. I really need to remember to buy a universal power adapter. Charging my camera is proving to be quite the challenge!
